' A ffor'mgyg Patented Apr. 8, 1952 SKI BINDING William Pepin, Beebe, Quebec, and Joseph Arthur ltodrigue, Stanstead, Quebec, Canada Application March 16, 1949, Serial No. 81,678
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ski bindings.
Generally, the invention contemplates a ski binding with laterally adjustable toe irons adapted to be used on ski boots of varying sizes and widths. Moreover being adjustable laterally, the sole gripping element is adjustable angularly to adapt itself to varying toe angles.
In addition to the above objects, the invention provides a sole gripping element which is adjustable horizontally, thatis, which is adjustable to adapt itself to varying thickness of soles, which is the main object of the present invention. This feature, per se, is highly advantageous in that it enables the binding to be set snugly and to adapt itself to be used with various widths of boots, or boots having varying toe angles and also boots having soles of varying thickness.
With the above and other objects in view that may appear While the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view through the central longitudinal axis of the invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the lowermost plate.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the upper plate.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the angularly adjustable toe plate.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the sole gripping element, and
Figure 6 is an end elevational view of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a perspective view showing the assembled relation of the component parts of the device.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the'several views it will be seen the device of this invention comprises a hinged base plate l adapted to be permanently mounted on a ski 9 by its front plate H which is formed with a plurality of countersunk holes I2 through which suitable mounting screws lZa are inserted for screw engagement with a ski on which the device is to be used, leaving the back or hinged portion free to swing upwardly from the ski. A pair of spaced laterally adjustable toe plates [3 are carried by the swingable portion of the base plate 10 and each plate is formed with a, perpendicular side portion. The toe plates l3 are secured in place by a top plate l spaced inwardly of said perpendicular side portions and bolted to the base plate Ill as hereinafter described.
Each of the toe plates l3 comprises an angularly formed sheet of metal having a plurality of perforations of bolt holes l6 extending therethrough to render it adjustable laterally on being bolted under the top plate l5 and has a pair of angularly disposed parallel slots l1 disposed in the perpendicular portion of the plates, said slots having their uppermost extremities extended toward the front plate H or frontwardly. Carried by each toe plate I3 is a gripping element l4 formed with spaced transverse members or rivets 20 engageable in solts H.
The gripping element l4, per se, consists of a strip of sheet metal [8 having a perpendicular flange or lip 19 formed integral therewith and at right angle to said strip 18. The strips are formed.
right and left hand and are mounted on the binding 50 that the lips l9 extend inwardly toward each other to engage with the top edge of the sole of a skiing boot placed therebetween. The pair of spaced apart rivets 20 are mounted on the vertical portion of the strip and are spaced apart to correspond to the angular slots [1 of the toe plate l3 in which they engage. When the strip I8 is mounted on the toe plate, it is adjustable horizontally to correspond to the thickness of the ski boot used in conjunction with the binding. The angularity of slot l1 being such as to lock the gripping element M in place with its lip l9 forced into engagement with a boot sole (not shown). I
The rear extremity of the sole gripping element M is formed with an aperture 2| for the purpose of securing thereto the conventional heel binding having sufficient elasticity to constantly urge the gripping element into an engaged position.
When the heel strap or binding is secured, it will exert a rearward pull against the sole gripping element and cause it to be securely held in position. It is obvious that the more firmly the sole gripping element engages the sole the more soli'd the boot will be held in the binding.
It is apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing that the invention provides a ski binding which is readily adaptable to all sizes of boots having varying toe angles and thickness of soles.
We claim:
A ski binding comprised of a base plate having a hinged forward portion adapted to be attached to a ski, side members each provided with lower horizontal flange having a plurality of apertures for selective adjustment on the base plate, and each having an oppositely disposed perpendicular flange having slots therein angularly inclined towards said forward portion, a top plate adapted to overlie the lower flanges of said side members, UNITED STATES PATENTS rivet means securing said top and bottom plates Number Name t and said side members in rela d m y for 902,654 Hannas Nov. 3, 190a pivotal movement as a unit about said hinge, and ,547,6 3 Seeberg July 28, 1925 gripping elements, each comprised of a horizontal 5 2,102,669 Bariea Dec. 21, 1937 flange and a vertical flange, the vertical flange 2,342,807 Horack Feb, 29, 1944 of each being provided with a pair of headed studs engageable in said inclined aperture, and FOREIGN PATENTS said horizontal flange of the gripping element Number Country Date comprising a boot-sole gripping element. 10 3, 6 Germany Jan. 12, 1926 WILLIAM PEPIN, 4 France Nov. 7. 1941 J.
