Crest gates devised particularly for use on the crests of solid weirs to give increased height, are generally designed for automatic operation, lowering the gate as soon as the water rises to a certain level. They consist as a rule of two leaves joined together at about a right angle and hinged on a horizontal axis to a masonry base. Under the lower leaf is a quadrant-shaped chamber formed in the concrete or masonry of the weir communicating alternatively by means of channels with the upper or lower pool.
The pressure of the water from the upper pool is transmitted over the axis, on which the leaves or gates are hinged to the pillars or masonry on 1 the bank, which must be built therefore very strong.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a gate or barrage used in combination with a hydraulic structure between two pools of different water level, where the pressure due to the water of the upper pool is substantially uniformly taken over by the masonry of the whole structure.
It is a further object to provide a gate or barrage of the sector type designed for regulation of the water level by overflow of the water.

Referring to Fig. 1 between two vertical side walls It a gate I is provided of the shape of a sector of a cylinder with a horizontal axis, joined on the top by a covering plate 2 forming together with the gate I a body of a cross section substantially of a horse-shoe. This body is hinged by means of the free end of the covering plate on a horizontal axis 3 coincident with the axis of said cylinder and supported by the masonry 9 of the structure. The free lower end of the gate l is provided with rollers 5 bearing against the structure of the masonry. These rollers may bear for instance against a specially built part 6 of the masonry having the shape of a cylinder sector or they may be guided in grooves made either in the concrete of the structure or by suitably bent iron reinforcements. The space underneath the body formed by the gate 1 and covering plate 2 is emptied by a channel into the lower water pool. The water pressure acting upon the front side of the gate I is uniformly transmitted over the rollers 4 to the masonry of the structure so that the 2 pillars or the masonry on the bank are released of the major part of their stress. The shape of the said body may be conveniently built so as to answer to the requirements of a smooth flow of water.
The raising or lowering of the body is done in any customary way, for instance by chains ll and pulleys. When completely lowered, the body takes the position i, 2', 4' shown in Fig. 1 in broken lines and bears against the abutments I, 8. The cover plate 2 forms a prolongation of the rear wall of the masonry 9 and the whole body requires only a minimum of space. v
The sector weir shown on Fig. 2 is similarly built and designed for automatic operation. The body formed by the gate I cover plate 2 and rollers 4 is again hinged on the horizontal axis 3 upon the masonry 9 built in the same way as in Fig. 1. The space covered by the gate and cover plate 2 is however constantly filled with water, a channel [4 connecting this space with the upper pool, a second channel'lfi enabling its emptying into the lower pool. Either both channels or only the channel l5 are provided with valves V by means of which the flow of water into and from that space may be controlled. The gate I is provided with a floating body 5, facilitating its raising.
The space below the gate I and cover plate 2 is normally connected with the upper pool and the water pressure aided by the action of the floating body 5 holds the body in the raised position. Should the gate be lowered or kept in an intermediate position, the channel it is closed and channel l5 opened, the water entrapped under the body is drained and the water pressure from the upper pool lowers the body until the desired position is achieved. When completely low cred, the body takes the position I, 2', l similarly as in the preceding case. Should-the gate be raised again, the channel I 5 is closed, channel It opened and the water pressure aided by the action of the floating body 5 raises the body automatically.
It is to be understood that the term masonry applies equally for a concrete structure or any other structure used for building dams, locks, barriers, weirs, or gates.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare, that what I claim is: v
1. Hydraulic apparatus, comprising in combination, support means to be located in a body of flowing liquid, said support means having a top surface provided with a substantially horizontal upstream edge extending transversely to the direction of liquid flow and a substantially horizontal downstream edge also extending transversely to the direction of-liquid flow, said support means having a first side surface extending downwardly from said upstream edge thereof and a second side surface opposite to said first side surface and extending downwardly from said downstream edgethereof; a channel-shaped gate means located over said top surface'of said support means with the interior of said channelshaped gate means facing said top surface, said gate means having a first elongated edge portion pivotally connected to said downstream edge' of said support means and having a second elongated edge portion located adjacent'to 'said upstream edge of said support means 'andonthe upstream side thereof; and moving means located' onsaid apparatus for turning said gate means about its pivotal connection to said downstream edge of said supporting means between one position where said second elongated edge portion ofsaid gate means is at substantially the same level as said upstream edge of said supportrneans and another position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is located below said upstream edge of said support means-and 'on the upstream side of said first side surface of said support means.
2. Hydraulic apparatus, comprising in combination, support means to be located in a body of flowing liquid, said support means having a top surface provided with a substantially horizontal upstream edge extending transversely to the direction of liquid flow and a substantially horizontal downstream edge also extending transversely to the direction of liquid flow, said support means having a first side surface extending downwardly from said upstream edge thereof and a second side surface opposite to said first side surface and extending downwardly from said downstream edge thereof, said second side surface of said support means being curved and extending away from said downstream edge of said support means in the downstream direction; a channel-shaped gate means located over said top surface of said support means with the interior of said channel-shaped gate means facing said top surface, said gate means having a first elongated edge portion pivotally connected to said downstream edge of said support means and having a second elongated edge portion located adjacent to said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side thereof, said first side surface of said support means adjacent to said upstream edge thereof being of an arcuate shape and having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of curvature and said gate means having a first side extending from said second edge portion thereof and being arcuately curved, said curved first side of said gate means having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of curvature, said gate means having a second curved side extending from said first edge portion thereof and said first and second sides of said gate means being connected to each other by a smoothly curved portion of said channel-shaped gate means which merges into said first and second sides; and moving means located on said apparatus for turning said gate means about its pivotal connection to said downstream edge of said supporting means between one position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is at substantially the same level as said upstream edge of said support means and another position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is located below said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side of said first side surface of said support means, said second curved side of said gate means in said other position thereof forming an extension of said second side of said support means.

Hydraulic apparatus, comprising in combination, support means to be located in a body of flowing liquid, said support means having a top surface provided with a substantially horizontal upstream edge extending transversely to the direction of liquid fiow and a substantially horizontal downstream edge also extending transversely to the direction of liquid flow, said support means having a first side surface extending downwardly from said upstream edge thereof and a second side surface opposite to said first side surface and extending downwardly from said downstream edge thereof, said second side surface of said support means being curved and extending away from said downstream edge of said support means in the downstream direction; a channel-shaped gate means located over said top surface of said support means with the interior of said channel-shaped gate means facing said top surface, said gate means having a first elongated edge portion pivotally connected to said downstream edge of said support means and having a second elongated edge portion located adjacent to said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side thereof, said first side surface of said support means adjacent to said upstream edge thereof being of an arcuate shape and having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of curvature and said gate means having a first side extending from said second edge portion thereof and being arcuately curved, said curved first side of said gate means having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of curvature, said gate means having a second curved side extending from said first edge portion thereof and said first and second sides of said gate means being connected to each other by a smoothly curved portion of said channel-shaped gate means which merges into said first and second sides; and moving means located on said apparatus for turning said gate means about its pivotal connection to said downstream edge of said supporting means between one position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is at substantially the same level as said upstream edge of said support means and another position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is located below said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side of said first side surface of said support means, said second curved side of said gate means in said other position thereof forming an extension of said second side of said support means and said moving means comprising a chain operatively connected to said gate means and a pulley over which said chain is guided, said chain and pulley being located over said gate means.

Hydraulic apparatus, comprisin in combination, support means to be located in a body of flowing liquid, said support means having a top surface provided with a substantially horizontal upstream edge extending transversely to the direction of liquid fiow and a substantially horizontal downstream edge also extending transversely to the direction of liquid fiow, said support means having a first side surface extending downwardly from said upstream edge thereof and a second side surface opposite to said first side surface and extending downwardly from said downwstream edge thereof, said second side surface of said support means being curved and extending away from said downstream edge of said support means in the downstream direction; a channel-shaped gate means located over said top surface of said support means with the interior of said channel-shaped gate means facing said top surface, said gate means having a first elongated edge portion pivotally connected to said downstream edge of said support means and having a second elongated edge portion lo cated adjacent to said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side thereof, said first side surface of said support means adjacent to said upstream edge thereof being of an arcuate shape and' having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of curvature-and said gate means having a first side extending from said second edge portion thereof and being arcuately curved, said curved first side of said gate means having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of curvature, said gate means having a second curved side extending from said first edge portion thereof and said first and second sides of said gate means being connected to each other by a smoothly curved portion of said channel-shaped gate means which merges into said first and second sides; and moving means located on said apparatus for turning said gate means about its pivotal connection to said downstream edge of said supporting means between one position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is at substantially the same level as said upstream edge of said support means and another position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is located below said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side of said first side surface of said support means, said second curved side of said gate means in said other position thereof forming an extension of said second side of said support means and said moving means comprising a first duct communicating at one end thereof with the interior of said channel-shaped gate member and having the other end thereof located on the upstream side of said support means and a second duct communicating at one end thereof with the interior of said channel-shaped gate member and having the other 'end thereof located on the downstream side of said support means, and a pair of valve means respectively located in said first and second ducts, said ducts serving to direct liquid to the interior of said channel-shaped gate means above said top surface of said support means, so that said liquid above said top surface of said support means supports said gate means at a desired position.
8. Hydraulic apparatus, comprising in combination, support means to be located in a body of flowing liquid, said support means having a top surface provided with a substantially horizontal upstream edge extending transversely to the direction of liquid flow and a substantially horizontal downstream edge also extending transversely to the direction of liquid flow, said support means having a first side surface extending downwardly from said upstream edge thereof anda second side surface opposite to said first side surface and extendin downwardly from said downstream edge thereof, said second side surface of said support means being curved and extending away from said downstream edge of said support means in the downstream direction; a channel-shaped gate means located over said top surface of said support means with the interior of said channel-shaped gate means facing said top surface, said gate means having a first elongated edge portion pivotally connected to said downstream edge of said support means and having a second elongated edge portion located adjacent to said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side thereof, said first side surface of said support means adjacent to said upstream edge thereof being of an arcuate shape and having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of curvature and said gate means having a first side extendingfrom said second edge portion thereof and being arcuately curved, said curved first side of said gate means having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of-curvature, said gate means having a second curved side extending from said first edge portion thereof and said first and second sides of said gate means being connected to each other by a smoothly curved portion of said channel-shaped gate means which merges into said first and second sides; moving means located on said apparatus for turning said gate means about its pivotal connection to said downstream edge of said supporting means between one position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is at substantially the same level as said upstream edge of said support means and another position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is located below said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side of said first side surface of said support means, said second curved side of said gate means in said other position thereof forming an extension of said second sideof said support means and said moving means comprising a first duct communicating at one end thereof with the interior of said channel-shaped gate member and having the other end thereof located on the upstream side of said support means and a second duct communicating at one end thereof with the interior of said channel-shaped gate member and having the other end thereof located on the downstream side of said support means, and a pair of valve means respectively located in said first and second ducts, said ducts serving to direct liquid to the interior of said channel shaped gate means above said top surface of said support means, so that said liquid above said top surface of said support means supports said gate means at a desired position; and buoyant means connected to said first side of said gate means on'the interior of said channelshaped gate means for helping the liquid over said top surface of said support means to support said gate means at a desired position.
9. Hydraulic apparatus, comprising in combination, support means to be located in a body of flowing liquid, said support means having a top surface provided with a substantially horizontal upstream edge extending transversely to the direction of liquid flow and a substantially horizontal downstream edge also extending transversely to the direction of liquid flow, said support means having a first side surface extending downwardly from said upstream edge thereof and a second side surface opposite to said first side surface and extending downwardly from said downstream edge thereof; a channel-shaped gate means located over said top surface of said support means with the interior of said channelshaped' gate means facing said top surface, said gate means having a first elongated edge portion pivotally connected to said downstream edge of said support means and having a second elongated edge portion located adjacent to said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side thereof, said first side surface of said support means adjacent to said upstream edge thereof being of an arcuate shape and having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of curvature and said gate means having a side extending from said second edge portion thereof and being arcuately curved, said curved side of said gate means having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of curvature; moving means located on said apparatus for turning said gate means about its pivotal' connection to said downstream edge of said supporting means between one position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is at substantially the same level as said upstream edge of said support means and another position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is located below said upstream edge of said support means and on the e upstream side of said first side surface of said support means; and roller means connected to said second edge portion of said gate means and bearing against said arcuate first side of said support means to guide said gate means during movement between said positions.
10. Hydraulic apparatus, comprising in combination, support means to be located in a body of flowing liquid, said support means having a top surface provided with a substantially horizontal upstream edge extending transversely to the direction of liquid flow and a substantially horizontal downstream edge also extending transversely to the direction of liquid flow, said support means having a first side surface extending downwardly from said upstream edge thereof and a second side surface opposite to said first side surface and extending downwardly from said downstream edge thereof, said second side surface of said support means being curved and extending away from said downstream edge of said support means in the downstream direction; a channel-shaped gate means located over said top surface of said support means with the interior of said channel-shaped gate means facing said top surface, said gate means having a first elongated edge portion pivotally connected to said downstream edge of said support means and having a second elongated edge portion located adjacent to said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side thereof, said first side surface of said support means adjacent to said upstream edge thereof being of an arcuate shape and having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center 10 of curvature and said gate means having a first side extending from said second edge portion thereof and being arcuately curved, said curved first side of said gate means having the pivotal axis of said gate means as its center of curvature, said gate means having a second curved side extending from said first edge portion thereof and said first and second sides of said gate means being connected to each other by a smoothly curved portion of said channel-shaped gate means which merges into said first and second sides; moving means located on said apparatus for turning said gate means about its pivotal connection to said downstream edge of said supporting means between one position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is at substantially the same level as said upstream edge of said support means and another position where said second elongated edge portion of said gate means is located below said upstream edge of said support means and on the upstream side of said first side surface of said support means, said second curved side of said gate means in said other position thereof forming an extension of said second side of said support means; and roller means connected to said second edge portion of said gate means and bearing against said arcuate first side of said support means to guide said gate means during movement between said positions.
