2 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved knitting needle and has for one of its principal objects the provision of a knitting needle which is provided with a guard at one end, the guard being so shaped as to receive the opposed end of a companion needle, whereby a pair of such knitting needles may be associated into a convenient and safe package.
One of the important objects of this invention is to provide a knitting needle having one blunt end and with a guard afiixed at such blunt end, the purpose of the guard being for the reception of the pointed end of a similar needle whereby the two needles, either with or without any work thereon, can be conveniently carried and without any danger of tangling the work or yarn.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a knitting needle with a guard or clip at one end, which clip is adapted to receive the opposite end of a similar needle, for convenient holding of the two needles together as a unit when not in use.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawings and following specification.
The invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of an improved knitting. needle embodying a clip or guard of this in-- vention.
Figure 2 shows a pair of needles of this invention associated in a unit by means of the asso ciated clips, whereby the same can be readily handled and transported.
Figure 3 is an end view of the associated needles illustrated in Figure 2.
Figure 4 shows the needles of this invention in use in a natural knitting operation, the blunt ends with the clips or guards thereon being omitted.
As shown in the drawings:
The reference numeral It indicates generally a knitting needle construction in accordance with the principals of this invention.
As illustrated, the needle has a pointed end l2 and a blunt end M. A guard or clip i6 is fastened at the blunt end I4, this being shaped as best shown in Figure 3, having a rear loop which encircles the blunt end M of the needle I and is fastened thereto by soldering or any other convenient or desirable manner.
The guard is composed of some spring-like material, preferably metal, and has a restricted medial portion I8 which widens into a bifurcated structure having opposed semi-circular loop portions 20, this being for the clamping reception of the pointed end I2 of a similar needle, as best illustrated in Figure 2.
The bifurcations preferably terminate in outwardly diverging flared ends 22, whereby the two opposed portions of the clip may be readily separated for a snap insertion of the corresponding end of an associated needle I0. Each clip includes a unitary U-shaped structure with its inner base or loop portion permanently fastened to one end of its respective needle.
The needles are used in an ordinary manner, as indicated in Figure 4 where a piece of work or knitting 24 is illustrated as being in process on the needles.
It will be evident that herein is provided a new type of knitting needle which includes at one end an integral guard or clip which acts for the protective reception of the opposed end of a similar needle, whereby the needles may be associated in pairs for ready handling and transportation.
The difficulties attendant upon the promiscuous toss of a pair of knitting needles with work thereon a basket, bag or other receptacle are eliminated by the use of this invention and no tangled result. This feature alone saves considerable time and annoyance so far as the operator is concerned. The device is simple, economical, and can be readily used with almost any type of work.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a. wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I, therefore,
do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A guarded knitting needle having a clip fastened to one end, the clip comprising a bifurcated spring-like structure and including opposed semi-circular portions for the reception of the opposite end of a similar needle and having flared extensions for ready insertion of the opposite end of said similar needle, whereby an associated structure of a pair of needles results for ready handling and transportation.
2. A guarded knitting needle having a, clip fastened to one end, the clip comprising a bifurcated spring-like structure and including opposed semi-circular portions for the reception of 4 the opposite end of a similar needle and having UNITED STATES PATENTS flared extensions for ready insertion of the op- Number Name Date posite end of said similar needle, the clip itself 1,298,033 Gaddess Man 25 1919 comprising a, unitary U-shaped structure with 1 496 579 Kraus June 1924 its loop portion permanently fastened to one end 5 1:537:762 Genese May 1925 of i s p r lar n 2,233,105 Turner M 12, 1942 EMMA LANDON- 2,433,102 Dion Dec. 23, 1947 2,444,102 Kendig June 29, 1948 REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the 10 FOREIGN PATENTS file of this patent: Number Country Date 457,543 France July 12, 1913
