Description

(ModeL) 7 D. C. GRIFFIN.
LAUNDRY HEATER. V H No. 259,132; I Patnt edJu ne6,188Z..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL O. GRIFFIN, OF BURLINGTOR'IOWA.
LAUNDRY-H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,132, dated June 6, 1882,
Application filed June 1, 1880. (ModeL) Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved heater; Fig. 2, a vertical central section Fig. 3,a side elevation, partly broken away, showing my improved heater when used in connection with a dry-room.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in laundry-heaters, having for its object the heating of sad-irons, steamboiler, and dry-room from one fire and to this end the invention consists in novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A represents a fire-box, provided with the usual grate, a, and ash-pit a, and b b the usual doors for thefire-box and its ash-pit. The firebox above the grate has inclined sides D E, having exterior surrounding rims, d e, for supporting the sad-irons and smoothing or polishing irons.
F represents a vertical tubular boiler, secured to the top and over the fire-box through the medium of the flanges d f of fire-box and boiler, and bolts and nuts 01 f. This boiler is provided with a series of vertical combustion-flues, f, passing up through it and communicating with a conical hood, G, mounted on the top of the boiler, and having the smokestack H, provided with the damper h. The
boiler is provided with the usual steam-gage, inlet and outlet pipes provided with stop-cocks, and other necessary appendages desired for steam-boilers.
The inclined surfaces D E provide a large space for heating sad-irons and smoothing or polishing irons, while at the same time forming goodradiators, the lower surface, E, being adapted for sad-irons and the upper surface, D, for the smoothing or polishing irons. The said surfaces D E may be round, or of some angular figure, as adecagon or octagon.
I represents a dry-room located above the heater, and which heater is partially inclosed by a surrounding jacket, J, which communicates with said dry-room, and by means of which the air as it is heated passes up into said dry-room.
It will be seen that by placing a boiler, F, above the fire-box, having inclined sides D E, I am enabled to heat with one fire sad and smoothing or polishing irons, and at the same time generate steam for laundry use; and also .room I, when used in connection with the surrounding jacket J.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do not wish to be understood as claiming broadly a fire-box haxing inclined surfaces for heating sad-irons nor a fire-box having a steam-boiler arranged on top thereof, having vertical flue or flues passing up through said boiler and communicating with a smoke-stack; but I What I claim as new, and, desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a laundry-heater, the combination of a fire-box having inclined surfaces D E and surrounding rims d e, for supporting the sadirons and smoothing or polishing irons, the steam-boiler F, arranged over said fire-box, vertical flue or flues f, passing up through said boiler, conical hood G, and smoke-stack H, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. In a laundry-heater, the combination, with the fire-box having inclined'surt'aces and steam-boiler, of the dry-room I and jacket J, partially inclosing said heater, substantially as and for the purpose heiei-n shown and described.
