5 Claims. l
This invention relates to heat exchange apparatus, particularly of the shell and tube type.
The invention provides novel heat exchange apparatus which is compact, is useful for high pressure work although not limited thereto, and is capable of being quickly and easily cleaned.
The invention will be understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, and in which:
Fig. l is an elevational View with parts in section, of a floating head heat exchanger embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the left hand end of the device, as viewed in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the right hand end of the device, as viewed in Fig. 1;
Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are sectional views taken respectively on lines 9 4, 5 5, 6 6, 1 1, and 8 8 of Fig. l;
Fig. 9 is a horizontal sectional view of the left hand end portion of the device, as viewed in Fig. l and taken on line 9 9 of Fig. l;
Fig. 10 is a sectional view taken on line I0 I0 of Fig. 6, and
Fig. l1 is an elevational view with parts in section, of a heat exchange device embodying the invention and having fixed tube sheets.
Like characters of reference refer to the same or to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to Figs. 1 to l0 of the drawings, the heat exchanger includes a cylindrical shell I having a flange II at one end, to which is detachably secured a xed tube sheet I2, and a lioating head at the other end comprising a movable Atube sheet I3 and a cylindrical extension I4 of an outside diameter slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the shell I0, to permit the extension lIII to move axially within the shell toward and from the fixed tube sheet I2. A plurality of tubes I5 extend through the shell between the xed and movable tube sheets I2 and I3. To prevent leakage between the shell and the extension I4 of the floating head, a packing gland is provided which comprises an annulus I6 welded to the end ofthe shell I0 and which has an inwardly projecting flange I'I in sldable engagement with the outer periphery of the extension I4 of the floating head. The packing I8 is disposed between'the annulus I5 and the extension I4, and the packing is retained in position by an adjusting ring I9 having a lateral flange 20 which is movable inthe space between the annulus I6 and the extension I4. Pressure on the packing is adjusted by turning nuts 2i on bolts 22. Fluid is introduced into the shell through an inlet nozzle 23 and is withdrawn from the shell through on outlet nozzle 24. If desired, the flow of fluid through the shell may be reversed and it may be introduced through nozzle 2li and withdrawn through nozzle 23. The shell is provided with a wrapper baille 25 which confines the flow of fiuid in the shell substantially to the space occupied by the tubes I5. A plurality of spaced baffles 26 causes the fluid in the shell to flow in a tortuous path over the tubes therein. The shell is provided with a vent 2l and with a drain 28.
In the embodiment of the invention selected for illustration in Figs. 1 to l0, the tubes I5 are connected at their ends to provide for the flow of iiuid through the tubes serially, with each tube providing a single pass through the heat exchanger. The return connections at the fixed tube sheet end of the heat exchanger, as well as the inlet and outlet tube connections, are provided by a channel member 29, and the return connections at the floating tube sheet end are provided by a channel member 30. Channel member 29 has an inlet nozzle 3l and an outlet nozzse 32 which extend from the annular` periphery of the member. The inlet nozzle connects with one end of a curved passage 33 in the channel member 29 the other end of whirh connects with the tube I9 constituting the rst pass through the exchanger. Outlet nozzle 32 similarly communicates with a curved passage 34 which also connects with the tube providing the last pass through the exchanger. Channel member 29 is provided with a plurality of return channels 35 which are arranged and disposed to connect the ends of adjacent tubes to provide for series flow of the fluid through the tubes in the shell, as indicated in Fig. 4. Channel member 30 is similarly provided with a plurality of return channels 36, Figs. 8 and 9, which connect the ends of adjacent tubes at the oating head ends thereof to provide for series flow of the fluid through the tubes.
The channel members 29 and 30 are detachably secured to the fixed and floating tube sheets respectively, by means which permit the channel members to be removed and replaced readily. As shown, such retaining means' comprises a cover 3l for the fixed tube sheet channel member 29, f
which is removably secured to the shell I0. The cover 3l is provided with laterally and inwardly extending arms 38 and 39, Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the inner portions of which are adapted to be received between spaced knuckles 40 and 4I re- 3 spectively, which are secured to opposite sides of the langed portion of the shell I0. The registering parts of the arms and knuckles have registering apertures through which a hinge pin 42 passes, to removably secure the cover 31 to the shell I with the channel member 29 between the fixed tube sheet I2 and the cover. Cover 31 is provided with a plurality of set screws 44, the inner ends of which engage the outer face of the channel member 29. Tightening of these set screws when the cover member 31 is in position on the shell, will force the channel member 29 against the tube sheet I2 or a gasket thereon and will seal the return connections between the tubes I5. A plurality of bolts 45 extend through the cover 31 and thread into the channel member 29 to secure the channel member to the cover member so that the former may be swung to open position and returned to closed position simultaneously with the cover member. It will be understood that when it is desired to remove the channel and cover members, one of the pins 42 may be removed and the channel and cover members may be swung about the other pin 42 as a hinge to open position, or if desired, both pins 42 may be removed and the channel and cover members may be removed entirely from the shell.
At the floating tube sheet end of the heat exchanger, the channel member 30 is held in position by a cover member 46, like cover member 31, and having laterally and inwardly extending arms 48 and 49 at opposite sides thereof, the inner ends of which are disposed between spaced knuckles 50 and 5I and are secured thereto by pins 53 which extend through registering apertures in the arms and knuckles. The cover member 46 is provided with a plurality of set screws 54 to force the channel member against the gasket 55 and the floating tube sheet I3, and a plurality of bolts 56 to fasten the channel member to the cover member. However, to permit the tube bundle to be withdrawn from the shell through the right hand end thereof, as viewed in Fig. 1, the knuckles 50 and 5I are secured to a hinge ring 51 which is detachably secured to the floating tube sheet I3. Referring particularly to Figs. 9 and 10, the annular periphery of the lloating tube sheet I3 is provided With an annular recess 58 which receives an inwardly extending annular flange of a split ring 59 which overlies the outer end portion of the oating tube sheet I3. The hinge ring 51 has a groove 60 in the outer part of its inner peripheral portion to-receive the split ring, as shown particularly well in Fig. 9. To insure the correct n positioning of the hinge ring 51 on the tube sheet and to prevent rotation of the ring, the tube sheet and hinge ring are provided with diametrically opposed keyways, each of which receives a key 6I which is retained in position by a set screw 62 threaded in the hinge ring. With this arrangement, the cover member 46 and the channel member 30 maybe removed and replaced in the manner described in connection with the corresponding parts at the opposite end of the heat exchanger, and the hinge ring may be removed from the floating tube sheet by loosening the set screws 62, sliding the hinge ring toward the opposite end of the heat exchanger to an extent which will permit the removal of the split ring 59, after which the hinge ring may be withdrawn from the tube sheet. To return the hinge ring to operative position, it is placed on the tube sheet I3 and is moved to a position which will permit the insertion of the keys 6I in their keyways, assuming they have been removed previously, and the insertion of the split ring, after which the hinge ring is moved into operative position with the keys 6I in their keyways, and the set screws 62 are tightened.
The form of the invention shown in Fig. l1, is similar to the form shown in Figs. 1 to l0. excepting that the tube sheets are xed at both ends and an expansion joint is employed in lieu 'of a packing gland. In Fig. 1l, the tube sheet 63 has a cylindrical extension- 64 which is provided with a flange 65 of sufliciently large diameter to receive within it the end of the shell I0. The llange 65 is secured to one end of an expansion joint 66, the other end being xed to a member 61 which is welded to the outer wall of the shell I0. A channel member 68 having a plurality of channels similar to the channels 36, is held in position against the tube sheet, or a gasket on the tube sheet, by a cover member 69 similar to the cover member 46, and which is provided with a plurality of set screws 10. The cover member 69 is detachably secured to the shell I0 through laterally and inwardly extending arms 1I which are received between spaced knuckles 12 on the shell. A pin 13 passes through Iregistering apertures in each of the arm and knuckle groups at each side of the tube sheet and retains the cover plate in position. The cover plate and channel member are removed and replaced in the manner previously described in connection with the removal and replacement of the channel member 29 and cover plate 31.
From the foregoing it will be perceived that heat exchangers embodying the invention are compact, and that the tubes and the parts associated with the tubes, as Well as other parts of the exchangers, are readily accessible for cleaning and repair.
The present application is a continuation of application Serial No. 476,880 led February 24, 1943, now abandoned.
Since changes may be made in the form, location and relative arrangement of the several parts of the apparatus disclosed without departing from the principles of the invention, it will be understood that the invention is not to be limited excepting by the `scope of the appended claims. n
