3 Claims.
My invention relates to a clamping device for use in store front construction and has particular reference to a type of construction which is assembled from the outside of the building upon which the store front is mounted and which can also be disassembled from the outside of the building in contrast to the usual types of store front construction where the major part of the disassembling is performed from the inside of the structure.
Another and further object of my invention is the provision of a clamping device for use in store front construction which is providedgwith anchoring means of arfrictional nature in the outerglass pane engaging section so that in placing the glass in the store front sections the outer sections are merely put in position by the workmen and pressed into place With their hands with sufficient force to cause the outer pane engaging section to firmly engage the glass and when pressed into iinal position is securely anchored in place.
Another and further object of my invention is the provision of a clamping device for use in store front construction which can easily accommodate varying thicknesses of glass from comparatively thin single glass panes to multiple combinations of panes cemented together spaced apart from each other by strips of material and cemented thereto, which type of glass is becoming popular in store front construction, forming a wall of a refrigerator compartment in which various types of frozen foods can be exhibited to the public.
Another and further object of my invention is the provision of a clamping window construction in which the outer pane engaging section can be made of much less height than the usual types of construction, thereby providing a store front of attractive appearance also increasing the area in the store front construction through which light may pass thus increasing the area both of visibility and allowing for better inside illumination of the store upon which the front is mounted.
Another and further object of my invention is the provision of an outer glass pane engaging section which is fixed into position by the operators by pressure exerted upon it and without the use of tools, clamping mechanisms or the like, so the glass pane may be rmly mounted and yet is not subject to unequal stresses and therefore breakage in the placing of the store fronts in position now common with the various type of store front constructions.

be more fully and better understood by reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings and in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a store front construction embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on the same line as Figure 1, but with the parts being separated instead of assembled in position as shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan section on lines 3, 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a view partially in section and partially in elevation on lines 4, 4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a perspective View showing certain of the parts cut away and in disassembled relationship;
Figure 6 is a perspective locking member; and
Figure 7 is a perspective view of one of the clips which is mounted in the outer pane engaging member.
Referring now specically to the drawings and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout, a `sill I0 is shown having a frame member II adjacent thereto, the frame member having a channel I 2 therein whereby an abutting surface I3 is provided against which glass pane I4 abuts on its inner side.
A Z-shaped cover member I5 is provided having an outer flange I6 which extends downward over the outer edge of the sill III and an inner oppositely disposed iiange I'I Which extends upward in the channel I2, this cover member I5 being secured to the sill I0 by means of screws I8, I8 so that this cover member I5 is held in fixed relation with the sill I0.
A plug member comprising a base portion I9 and an outwardly extending plug portion 20 is provided, this plug being spot welded to the cover at 2|, 2l or otherwise secured thereto with the base portion I9 being of a greater thickness than the plug member 20 so the plug member 20 is spaced upward a short distance from the surface of the cover member I5.
An outer pane engaging member 22 is provided, this member being generally arcuate in cross section and has an inturned nange 23 along its outer edge which rests upon the cover I5 in the normal assembled relationof the structure with an inner :flange 24 also extending inwardly with the face of this flange being parallel to the outer face of the glass pane I 4 against Whch it abuts in the normal assembled operation of the construction.
Anchor members designated as a whole as 25 view of the spring are provided, these anchor members comprising a wall portion 26 having a turned over end 21 with an opening 28 being provided which ex tends through the lower portion of the wall 26. A base portion 29 of the member 25 is provided having leg portions 30 and 3| extending outwardly therefrom, these leg portions 38 and 3| being bent upward at their outer ends and normally lie upon the inner face of the inturned flange 23 on the member 22, with the main portion of the legs 30 and 3| of the base 28 being parallel with the iiange 23 so that they both rest upon the cover |5.
On the inner sides of each of the leg portions 3U and 3| are struck up projections 32 and 33 which extend upward from the face of the legs 30 and 3| for purposes hereinafter described.
A spring lock member designated as a whole as 34 is provided which comprises a body portion 35 with the upper edge portion 36 being positioned between the main wall 26 and the folded over portion 21 of the member 25 and spot welded to this member at 31, 31 to secure this member 34 in position on the anchor member 25. The member 34 is out out on each side at 38, 38 so as to increase its resiliency and also is cut out at 39 so that leg portions 4|) and 4| are formed at the sides of the member 34, these leg portions extending approximately parallel with the portion 29 of the anchor 25. The cut out 39 extends partially into the wall portion 35 in alignment with the opening 28 in the member 25 with the edge 42 slightly lower than the top edge of the opening 28 so as to'engage the plug 22 when the outer v wallmember is pushed into position against the glass pane |4 with the plug 20 extending through the opening 28. The edge 42 of the locking member 34 extends slightly into the path of the plug 20 so that as the pane engaging member 22 is pushed into position the member 34 is :flexed slightly in a counterclockwise direction,` the edge 42 of this member rides along the top of the plug 20 untill the outer member 22 is pushed into its nal vposition When'the body 35 is at an angular position withv respect to the plug 20 and in engagement therewith and prevents the separation of these parts.`
The legs 48 and 4| are connected by means of a web 43 whichwebnormally rides on top of the projections 32 and 33. An opening 44 is provided nearf the vbase of'the member 22 in alignment with the opening28 so that when it is desired to releaseYthe-outersash engaging member 22 a tool 45 having a hookend 48 is inserted through the opening 44 until-the hook engages against the inner edge of the web 43 `and with an outward pull the member 34 is flexed so that edge 42 is free of tiri-el plugf20, and the projections 32 and 33 engage -against'the inner edge of the web 43 thereby releasing the locking member from the plug 'and holding the locking member 34 out of engagement with the plug 28 and allowing the outerA sash engaging member 22 to be quickly and easily removed from the structure.
When desired to assemble the structure again the lockingmember is released from the projections-32 and Y33 by lifting the outer ends of the legs 40 and 4| -including the web 43 slightly and becauseof the resiliency of the locking member y34, this member34 moves in a counter-clockwise position slightly and the edge 42 is again low enough tolengage the-plug 20 when placed into position by the workmen.
Fromthe foregoing description it is believed that vthe operation will be readily and quickly understood. The anchor members 25 including the locking members 34 are xed in the outer sash engaging member 22 at the plant in normal spaced relation with each other and in alignment generally with the plug 20 secured to the cover member l5. The opening 28 is slightly wider than the width of the plug 2D as is also the opening 39, so that some adjustment can be made with respect to the relationship of the outer member 22 in aligning this member with the openings 28.
After the glass pane has been set in position and the spring locking members 34 released the Workmen merely Ipress the outer section 22 against the glass pane I4 with their hands and because the amount of pressure which can be exerted in this manner is somewhat limited, there is no danger of the glass being broken and yet the outer glass pane member 22 can be firmly secured in position in this manner and affords a suiciently tight connection for the glass pane member I4 to hold it securely in position.
The structure also has the advantage of being able to .be quickly and easily assembled and disassembled should the glass pane be broken for any reason, and it would be necessary to replace the broken pane of glass with a new one.
While I have described more or less precisely the details of construction, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substitution of equivalents as cir.- cumstanoes may vsuggest or render expedient without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention. Y
Whatis claimed is:
l. Store front construction vcomprising in combination a sill, a movable outer glass pane section, an inner glass pane supporting member, a glass pane, an anchor member having a wall section with an opening therein and a base portion extending at an angle to the said wall portion, a plug on the said sill extending toward the anchor member in alignment with the said opening in the wallsection thereof, and a spring locking member mounted in said outer'glass pane section having an opening therein forming an edge portion in slightlyA ofset relation to the opening in the said anchor member, the said edge portion of the locking member being in frictional engagement with the said plug when in locked positions and having leg portions thereon, a web connecting the said leg-portions and means on the base portion of the anchor member for engagement with the said web whereby the said locking member is held in out of engaged position with the said plug.
2. Store front construction comprising in combination a sill, a movable outer glass pane section, an.inner glass pane-supporting member, a glass pane, an anchor member having a wall section with an opening therein and a base portion extending at an angle to the said wall portion, a plug on the said sill extending toward the anchor member in alignment with the said opening in the wall section thereof and a spring locking member mounted in said outer glass pane section having anopening therein forming an edge portion in slightly offset relation to the opening in the said anchor member, the said edge portion of the looking member being in frictional engagement with the said plug when in locked positions and having leg portions thereon, a web connecting the said leg portions and struck up portions on the base portion of the anchor member for engagement with the said web whereby the said locking member is held in out of engaged position with the said plug.

Store front construction comprising in combination a sill, a cover member therefor, an outer glass pane engaging section having a tool receiving opening at its base portion, a solid inner frame glass pane supporting member, an anchor member mounted in said outer glass pane engaging section having a wall section With a plug receiving opening therein and a base section having struck up portions thereon, an outwardly extending fixed plug secured to the said cover plate in alignment with the opening in the Wall of the anchor member and an angular spring locking member having a plug receiving opening therein secured at one of its ends to the wall portion of the anchor member and free at its opposite end the edge of locking member at one side of the opening therein frictionally engaging 6 the plug and engaging the struck up portions of the anchor member at its opposite side whereby the locking member is held in out of engaged position with the said plug.
