I V ATTAGHMENT FOR TBLEPBONBS. I No. 258,989. I Patented June 6, 1882.
"PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPHUS O. CHAMBERS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
ATTACHM ENT FOR TELEPHONES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 258,989, dated June 6, 1882.
Application filed August 25, 1881. (Modem To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEPHUs O. CHAM- BERS, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Telephones, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a provision to be attac-hed to the auditory or receiving tube of a telephone for enabling the user to close the unused ear against external sounds.
My device consists essentially of a spring which, extending from the receiving tube around to the other ear, terminates in a padded knob or button Whose pressure against the tragus or ear-valve closes the auditory canal and shuts out all interfering sounds.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a telephone provided with my attachment and the manner of its use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same to a larger scale. Fig. 3 is an edge view ofthe attachment. Fig. 4 represents a form of my improvement adapted for use on a stand or table. Fig. 5 represents a modification of my attachment.
A may represent a Bell telephone tube of the customary form.
B is a hinged clamp, adapted to be fastened to such tube by means of a set-serew,0. From clamp B projects a C-spring, D, which terminates in a pad. E. applied to the-users ear in the usual way, the spring-pad E is pressed against the tragus or ear-valve, so as to close. the auditory canal, and thus exclude all interfering noise.
In addition to the above essential features of my invention I sometimes-secure the spring to the clamp by a hinge, F, and provide upon the spring a rectangular lip or projection, G, that has a screw-threaded orifice which receives a set-screw, H,'hy which the distance of the pad from the mouth of the telephone may be decreased or increased, so as to secure the proper pressure upon the ear.
To the above features I also sometimes add The telephone being,
a stand, I, having a slidable shaft, J, capable of'being fixed at any height by means ofaset-screw, K, and having a hinged attachment, L, to a head, M, which is further hinged at right angles to hinge L by hinge N to the clamp before spoken of. This arrangement enables the instrument to be fixed at any desired height and angular presentation.
Another modification consists in forming the spring-connection of a single piece of spring-wire, D, Fig. 5, one end of which is bent inward, as at d, and has attached to it a soft pad or cushion, E, Fig. 5. The other end of the said wire is so bent in several convolutions, at, as represented,'as to adapt it to be readily opened to engage around the telephone tube and to possess suflijcient resilience to grasp the tube. Other convolutions, d", at the mid-length of the spring secure a sufficiently-permanent resilience, which can be rendered more'or less effective by forcibly bending the wire out or in.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 1. A telephone attachment consisting of a bent spring having means at one end adapting it to be secured toa telephone-tube and bearingat the other end a pad which, when the attachment is in position, closesthe unused ear, for the purpose set forth.
2. The telephone-tube attachment consisting of a bent spring having at one end a pad for closing the unused ear and at-the othera device for attaching itto the telephone-tube, and a set-screw for modulating the pad pressure, as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPHUS o. CHAMBERS.
