"UNITED "ST TES.
PATENT OFFIc ASA B. FISK, OF LYN DONVILLE, NEW YORK.
FRUlT-PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,906, dated June 6, 1882.
Application filed February 9, 1682. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Asa B. FISK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyndonville,
in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have made certain Improvements in Fruit- Iackages, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates more. particularly to" a species of connecting cover for peach-baskets, which can be fastened on to prevent damage to the fruit and theft and allow the baskets to be packed in rows on top of each other for storage or shipment, and the covers returned to the shipper, irrespective of the baskets, for future use; and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of said cover,
' Fig.2, a detail in perspective of one end, showing the fastening; and Fig. 3, details of the fastening.
AA represent two slats or side pieces, with the two ends B B fastened thereto. These side 7 slats are fastened a little below the top of'the end pieces, so as to leave a long space, a, and j wide enough for the shoulder. or rim 1) of a peach-basket to rest on the edge of slats A, as
effectual cover to the baskets.
shown in Fig. l.
The top D is made of slats also, with spaces between, to secure ventilation, and comes down on the top of the baskets O O and rests on the upper edges also of ends B B, and thus holds the shoulders Z 1) of the baskets against the top edge of the slats A A, preventing the baskets from dropping out, thus making an This top D is held on the side and endframe,AB, by abent hasp, c,of wire, the upper part setting in a groove in a piece of wood, D, fastened to the cover to strengthen it. The hasp swings up and down in this. his bent down sharply at the edge of the cover, as shown, and set over an eccentric piece of iron, g, pivoted above its center to the end of the box B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The under side of this pieceg is recessed out, as shown atf, arid under this lip g the hasp sets, as fully shown in Fig. 1.
To unfasten or fasten the hasp the lockingpiece gis swung round on its pivot so that the lip g is uppermost. If to be fastened, thelip part is swung down, and, being pivoted eccentrically, the heavier or lower part remains down over the end of the hasp until unfastened by hand.
'Ihis locking device may be at both ends, if desired; but usually one end will have a hasp over a fixed lip or button, which acts as a kind of hinge at that end.
This cover is of great importance to peach- .shippers, as baskets have nowto be covered with cloth or thin muslin to protect the fruit from theft, 850.; but no such baskets can be set on top. of each other in store or cars. The expense of the cloth for a large shipment is great, as it is an entire loss.
My cover will allow any number of tiers set on top of each other.
I claim- 1. In combination with a peach basket or baskets, O 0, having arim or shoulder,b, around the upper edge, the cover and frame consisting of the slats A A, ends B B, and top D, arranged so as to leave the space a at the sides, between the top D and sides A A, and suitable fastening devices, substantiaily as and for the purpose specified. I l
'2. In combination with the basket (J and coveringA B D, the locking device consisting of 'thebent hasps c c, stay-piece D, and eccentrically-pivoted locking-piece g 9, all arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified. I
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing gwitnesses.
- A. B. FISK.
Witnesses: a
J. B. DRAKE,

It looks up the baskets and protects the fruit entirely. Y
