1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to burners as used for gas and air mixtures in domestic heating plants, and in particular an improved type of burner having a plurality of peripheral openings or a continuous circumferential slit around the outer edge wherein the gas flame impinges directly against the entire inner surface of the boiler or furnace.
The purpose of this invention is to increase the efficiency of gas and air mixture burning devices by providing a burner head with a continuous funnel or conical-shaped mixing chamber having a relatively thin continuous annular discharge orifice that holds the gas fiame produced thereby in direct contact with the inner surface area of a furnace or the like.
Various types of burners have been provided for oil and gas mixtures but burners for this use usually provide a combustion area at the center and where peripheral discharge is provided vanes, tubes, or other confining distributing elements are employed. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a burner having a continuous centrally disposed mixing chamber formed between relatively heavy spaced cast iron webs wherein the mixture flows equally in all directions so that a smooth continuous mixture is discharged for burning.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to form the burner head of a gas burner so that a smooth continuous flow of fuel is provided in direct contact with the inner surface of the inner furnace or boiler wall.
Another object of the invention is to provide means in an improved burner head for gas mixtures having a continuous peripheral orifice for equally distributing and forcibly feeding the mixture to a combustion area in close proximity to the inner wall of a furnace or boiler.
Another object of the invention is to provide a burner head that is formed of separated sections that may readily be assembled in the furnace.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved burner for gas mixtures that may readily be installed in furnaces now in use either above or below the grate.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved burner for gas mixtures which discharges a smooth continuous film of the mixture directly against the inner wall of the furnace which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the new and novel combination, construction, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described, set forth in the claims appended hereto, and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating a typical installation of the burner in a furnace having a waterjacketed wall and with the burner positioned above the grate.
Figure 2 illustrates a typical vertical section through the burner head.
Figure 3 shows a plan view of a square burner.
Figure 4 is a detail showing a side elevation of the discharge edge of the burner with parts broken away illustrating a modification wherein the orifice lip is formed with a separate plate or with plates attached to the flange of the lower member of the burner.
Figure 5 is a detail taken on line 5--5 of Figure 3 showing a section through an edge of the burner also showing a modification as illustrated in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a similar section showing a further modification wherein an adjustable orifice plate is used.
Figure '7 is a vertical section through a burner similar to that shown in Figure 2 illustrating a modification wherein the burner head is formed of sections and the sections are bolted together.
Figure 8 is a similar view showing a different method of dividing the burner head into sections.
Figure 9 is a detail showing a modification wherein the baffle is lowered to engage the edge of the orifice lip, and the lip is provided with openings.
Figure 10 is a similar view showing the bafile, base, and orifice lip cast integral.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts the burner of this invention, as illustrated in Figures 1 to 8, is formed with a funnel-shaped base ID, a conical-shaped superimposed bafile l l, and an orifice plate [2.
In Figure 1 the burner isshown installed in a furnace l3 having inner and outer walls l4 and I5 and in this installation the burner head is mounted above the grate IS with a supply pipe l1 extending through a clinker door [8. The pipe is held by a strap I9 and a block 20 may be used on the grate under the inner end of the pipe to support the burner. On the outer end of the pipe I! is a fitting 2| having a gas supply connection 22 and a blower 23 which forces air into the mixing chamber and provides pressure to accelerate the discharge of the fuel mixture. A plate 24 is provided to close the 3 clinker door opening and the burner may also be provided with a pilot light 25 with a connection 26.
The base I is provided with a centrally disposed tubular hub 21 in which the end of the pipe I! is held by a set screw 28, and at the upper edge is a peripheral horizontally disposed flange 29 having an orifice lip 39 extending up ward from the inner edge thereof. The upper surface of the lip is spaced slightly from the under surface of the baffle H which is mounted on the base by bolts 3| that hold the baflie against bosses 32 around openings 33 in the base. The bafile H is also provided with openings 34 that register with the openings 33 so that secondary air may be provided to the upper surface of the burner head, and the pilot light may also be placed through these openings.
In the design shown in Figure 7 the burner head is formed with a central funnel-shaped section 35 having a. hub 35 and a circumferential recess 31 and an upper section 38 with a rim 39 and a flange 49, is secured thereto by bolts ll with spacing sleeves 42 which also hold the upper baffle. In this design the upper balile is formed of two sections 43 and 44 with flanges 45 and 45 of the sections held together by bolts 41. The section 38 is provided with an upwardly extending rib forming an orifice lip 48 providing a slight space 49 through which the gas mixture is discharged.
In Figure 8 the burner is formed with a center section 50 having a hub 51 and an outer section 52 is bolted thereto by bolts 53 through a flange '54. Spacing sleeves 55 are provided on the inner ends of the bolts which support the upper baffle 55, and the upper bafile is provided with a central section formed in two sections 51' and 58 which are held together by bolts 59, that also hold a sealing strip 60 that extends across the joint with the other edge held by bolts 6|. The outer edge of the central section is bolted to the upper bafile 56 by bolts 62 as shown. The outer section 52 of the burner is also provided with an orifice lip 63 providing a continuous orifice 64 around the periphery of the burner and this section is also provided with a continuous horizontally disposed flange 65.
In the design shown in Figures 4, 5, and 6, the burner is provided with a plate 66 having an upwardly extending flange 61 which is similar to the lip 30 shown in Figure 2, and this plate is held by screws 68 to the base 69- with the upper edge of the flange 6'! spaced slightly from the lower surface of the upper bafile providing a continuous orifice H, and in Figure 6, a. plate 12 with a flange I3 is held to the base ht by screws through slotted openings 16, thereby providing means. for adjusting the space 11 between the upper edge of the flange and upper baffle 18.
In the modification illustrated in Figure 9 the upper baffle H18 is lowered, so that the lower surface thereof engages the upper edge of the ori fice lip I09 of the base H0, and the lip is promixture passes; and in the design shown in Figure 10 the baflie H2 and the base H3 are cast integral with the orifice lip H4 integral with both, and the orifice lip is provided with outlet openings I I5, as shown.
The base and baffle of the burners of the different designs may be cast as complete units, or cast in sections as illustrated and described, and when cast in sections the sections may be large or small depending upon the type of furnace or boiler in which the installation is made. The burner may also be located above or below the grate position or at any suitable point, and the space between the base and bafile may be changed by the size of the spacing elements, so that the burner is comparatively adjustable and may be made to suit different conditions.
It will be understood that other modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
