1 Claim. (Cl. 294-67) This invention. relates to. a device for attachment to a hoist whereby loaded pallets may be readily handled. The invention is particularly well adapted for use in loading and unloading a shaft Mextendi'ng alongthe side of thedevice and rigidly fixed to the box frame Ill; The two corner posts I2 on the other side are connected by linkage to be presently described to hinged ships holds. 5 shafts I5 extending across the top of front and During recent years, the use of pallets for rear portions of the hoist attachment. handling goods of various kinds has rapidly in- Each of the hinged shafts I5 is constructed for creased with marked economies in storage and hinging on a pivot I6 and each is rigidly fixed at transportation The technique of using pallets one end to shaft [1, extending along one side of involves loading a predetermined number of the top of the device. At the other end, each packages onto a pallet of wood or steel adapted to hinged shaft I5 is rigidly fixed to shaft I8 exbe lifted and transported by a fork truck. In tending along the side of the device opposite to the cases of cartons, drums and other relatively shaft IT. The shafts I1 and I8 are rotatably rigid elements of regular shape; one loaded pallet mounted in ears I9 aifixed to the respective may be stacked on another t provide tiers of corner posts I2. A latch is rotatably mounted loaded pallets. Each pallet is readily handled on shaft 2| in a latch guide 22. The latch is proas a unit by fork trucks and a single truck opvided with two recesses adapted to engage a latch erator is able to handle large quantities of merpin 23 on the hinged shaft I5. A lever 24 fixed chandise rapidly with no manual strain. to the shaft 21 is provided for disengaging the Due to their small size and short turning radius, 20 latch 20 from the latch pin 23, the Weight of the fork trucks can handle loaded pallets in restricted lever 24 holding the latch no m y engagedspaoes, such as ships holds, railway cars and Referring specifically to Figure 1, the right trucks. Difficulties arise when it becomes necesfrom? a right real Corners of e bO frame "I sary to raise or lower loaded pallets in spaces carry a release Shaft 25 rotatably mountedt which do not permit of installing suitable ramps. the extremities of release shaft 25 are release For example, transfer of pallets from a dock to Cams 26 Secured thereto and Operated y handles a, hold or from a hold to a dock cannot be 1 21. A short link 28 is mounted at one end in the complished by fork truck. The present invention manner shown on release cam 26 for rotation provides a ready mechanism, easily handled by with respect thereto. The other end of short one man, for hoisting loaded pallets. 3o link 28 is rotatably connected to one end of a It is, accordingly, a principal object of the inlonger ink 29. Corner posts I2 decreased, drawing together e D d es of the are provided at the four corners of the hoist atw sides d p n h o m ed s. The tachment. The two corner posts I2 on one side device is now dropped over a loaded pallet and of the device carry ears l3 pivotally mounted on the handle 27 is moved to the left after release of the latch 20. This draws the hinged shaft l5 down, pushing out the upper edges and drawing together the angle irons 30 at the bases of corner posts I2 to engage the under surface of the pallet. As the hinged shaft I5 comes into the position shown in Figure 1, the lower recess of latch 20 engages the latch pin 23 rigidly looking the device in engagement with the pallet. The latter may then be hoisted to a desired position and the hoist attachment disengaged by releasing the latch 20 and rotating handle 21 to the right.
I claim:
A hoist attachment comprising a rectangular, horizontal main frame, means at the center of said frame to receive a hoist hook, a Vertical side frame pivotally connected intermediate its upper and lower edges to one side of said main frame, a horizontal upper frame overlying said main frame and pivotally connected along one side to said side frame, said upper frame being hinged along a median line thereof parallel to said side frame, a latch pin on said upper frame, a latch mounted on said main frame and adapted to engage said latch pin for retaining said upper frame parallel to said main frame, means to move said latch to disengage the same from said pin, a second side frame pivotally connected along its upper edge to said upper frame, a pendent link rigidly fixed to and depending from said upper frame adjacent said second side frame, an operating link pivotally connected to said main frame adjacent said second side frame, means to rotate said operating link about its pivot on said main frame, a short link pivotally connected at one end to said operating link at a pivot remote from the said pivot thereof on said main frame and pivotally connected at the other end to said pendent link at a pivot below said upper frame, and means at the bottoms of said side frames to engage a load.
