Description
8.4a. SEXTON.
Stove.
' Patented April. 29, 1842.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL B. SEXTON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
COOKING-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 2,587, dated April 29, 1842.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. SEx'roN, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking-Stoves, called the Revolving-Oven Cooking Stove, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. a vertical section.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts.
The stove, generally, is made like other stoves in use, having a fireplace A in front with apertures B in the top plate of the same for culinary articles with an oven C behind the fireplace around which the heat is caused to circulate in flue D, or pass directly into the smoke pipe E, arranged between the oven and fireplace by means of a damper F, except that the oven is cylindrical and revolves while the articles in the same remain stationary, having a door G at Fig. 2 1s each end, and apertures H in the top plate of the stove over the oven for boilers, &c., the stove being supported on four legs I in the usual manner.
The invention and improvement is in the arrangement of the oven and manner of turning it around, the horizontal stationary shelves, bars, or racks upon which the articles to be cooked are placed, and the mode of supporting the shelves.
A circular aperture of a little less diameter than the revolving oven is made in each end plate of the stove around which on the inside is fastened a circular collar K of a diameter a little less than the diameter of the inside of the cylindrical oven forming two circular collars or rims, one at each end, upon which the cylinder G is made to revolve in the manner hereafter described.
On the circumference of the oven at one end thereof is fastened a circular rack L. Into this rack a pinion M works fixed on a revolving axle N passed through the end plate of the stove near the top thereof on which is fixed a crank O .by which it is turned.
The horizontal stationary shelf P upon back at topuntil it touches the cylinder or oven 0, thus shutting off the communication to the flue E at the top of the cylinder and leaving a space D or flue between said plate Q and the cylinder or oven C at the lower part thereof causing the smoke to pass en; tirely around the oven before it reaches the said flue E, in the manner indicated by the arrows, the draft first passing over the inclined part of plate Q then around the oven and back to the under side of said inclined part of plate Q and then into the flue E.
The draft, however, may be opened directly to the flue E through an opening in the back plate Q of the fireplace opened or closed at pleasure by means of the damper E, so that the smoke may be prevented from passing around the oven if desired and conducted directly into the flue E.
The back of the stove at W is made the segment of a curve, a space D being left zlfoletween it and the cylinder C for the back The doors G of the oven and doors X of the fireplace are made and arranged in the usual manner.
hen the revolving oven is used for cooking the damper F is closed, the heat and smoke will then pass around the oven to the flue E, and when the side of the oven next the fireplace becomes too hot the oven is turned by the crank O and a cooler part brought next the fire, and thus the articles in the oven are prevented from being cooked more in one part than another.
lV hat I claim as my invention, and which I desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
The manner of supporting the revolving cylindrical oven on the circular collars K. Also securing the ends of the shelf P, rack, or bars R to the collars K, as described.
SAMUEL B. SEXTON.
