GUSTAV BRUEOK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,708, dated May 30, 1882.
Application filed March 28, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV BRUECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of fans for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me April 30, 1878, Reissue No. 8,207; and it consists in the novel means hereinafter described for connecting the parts of the fans, tendiug to increase their strength and durability.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is, ,a longitudinal section, showing the fan expanded or opened. Fig. 2 is a similar section when the fan is closed or folded.
Similarletters indicate corresponding parts.
The letters A B designate the telescopic sections of the handle, each composed of a tube having the proper length and diameter, and 0 indicates the fan leaves. To the upper end of the outer or main section, A, of the handle are secured the opposite ends of tapes D, two in number, which extend through and around the inner section, B, of the handle in a longitudinal direction, forming what may be termed a sling, and which support the outer or end leaves of the fan. The series of fan-leaves are compressed and fastened together at their central or inner extremities by a rivet or other suitable means, forming a head, 0, which fits the inner section, B, of the handle, and the fan is provided with the usual cords,fg, for opening or closing it. The tapes D are drawn into or out of the section Act the handle together with the inner section, B, and fan-leaves, and the length of the tapes is such that when the parts are pulled outward the tapes prevent the complete withdrawal of the inner section, as shown in Fig. 1, while. when the parts are retracted the tapes allow the inner section to move entirely within the outersection, as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the tapes D are secured to the outer section, A, bymeans of glue or other adhesive substance, re-ent'oreed bya ferrule, h, and to support the outer fan-leaves the tapes are secured thereto by stitching; but various other common contrivanees also can be used for either of these purposes.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the inner and outer tubular sections, A B, of the two tapes D, extending through and around both ends of the inner section, and each tape having its two ends connected with the upper endof the outer section, and the fan 0, carried by the inner section, and having its outer or end leaves connected with the tapes, substantiallyas and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
