Description

J. J. KUNDA SMOKING PIPE Feb. 26, 1952 Filed April 14, 1948 JNVENTOR. JOHN .J. A QNDA A T'TOEMEV Patented Feb. 26, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SMOKING PIPE John J. Kunda, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application April 14, 1948, Serial No. 20,989
This invention relates to improvements in smoking pipes, and more particularly to a novel smoking pipe having a manually operable ash ejector.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type having a member vertically reciprocable within the bowl of the pipe for dislodging the ashes therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ash ejector which is normally reciprocable within the bowl of the pipe by manual means, but which may be released for removal thereof for cleaning of the pipe.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a view in perspective of a pipe equipped with an ash ejector attachment embodying my invention with parts broken away and in section.
Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section through the pipe bowl.
Fig. 3 is a view partly in plan of the pipe bowl with parts broken away and in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral It refers to a pipe bowl, which has a small vertical bore at H thereof to receive a rod [2, which is releasably secured in a slidable socket element E35 by means of the set screw Id protruding exteriorly of the pipe bowl through a slot at l5 thereof beneath the bore II and communicating therewith. The coil tension spring I6 is anchored at I! adjacent the bottom of the lining member 23 described below and is connected by its upper end 18 with the said socket element IS. The rod l2 has an inverted U-shaped portion at IS with a relatively longer leg thereof 20 which extends downwardly within the pipe bowl I0 adjacent the inner side wall 2| thereof. The leg 20 terminates at its lower end in a coiled grate formation 22. The slot at l5 of bowl l0 has a metallic lining member 23 which is exteriorly and vertically slotted at 24 to present a relatively free sliding surface for the set screw l4 and the socket element I3.
In use, the coil spring It will normally retain the socket element I3 in the lowermost position within the liner 23. The U-shaped element [9 will then be brought to bear against the rim 25 of the pipe bowl l0, and the grate 22 will be horizontally disposed adjacent the interior bottom 26 of the pipe bowl. The pipe may then be loaded with tobacco by the user, and it will be seen that the tobacco will be held spaced from the stem opening of the pipe. After the tobacco has burned to ashes, the user will tip the pipe and by pushing upwardly against the set screw M to lengthen the tension spring I6 will bring the grate 22 up toward the rim 25 of the 1 Claim. (01. 131-183)- pipe. At the same time tipping the pipe, the ashes may thus be easily ejected. This operation eliminates the necessity for pounding the pipe bowl against some stationary object in order to release the ashes and partly burned tobacco. After the pipe has been used for a period of time, a cake or coating will tend to accumulate on the sidewall 2|. In order to remove the grate 22 for the purpose of reaming or otherwise cleaning the pipe, it is only necessary for the user to turn the set screw 14 to the left thus releasing the rod l2. After cleaning, the grate may be replaced and such removal will be infrequently necessary.
.It will be understood that the device is capable of various modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
In combination with a pipe bowl having a vertical slot exteriorly thereof and a reduced bore communicating therewith and open at the brim face of said bowl, a smooth metal lining within said slot, a socket element slidable in said lining, said socket element having a bore for a portion of its length in the upper portion thereof, an inverted U-shaped rod element, a relatively short leg of said rod element adapted for retention in said socket element, the longer leg of said rod element extending into the pipe bowl, the lower end of the said longer leg wound to form a flat spiral grate portion, a set screw in said socket element for releasably retaining said short leg of said rod element, and a coiled tension spring in said lining connecting said socket element with the lower portion of said lining to normally retain the grate in lowered position within the bowl.
