Description

Fatenteol Feb. 19, 1952 UNITED STATES No Drawing. Application February 5, 1949, Serial 74,857
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a new and improved tobacco.
It is known to add certain ingredients to tobacco to prepare the tobacco in certain forms, such as plug tobacco and the like, but such added substances are by nature sweetening or cementing agents. It is also known to add to smoking tobacco certain rosin and tar compounds, or pine needle oil, or menthol. The addition of resin or tar compounds or pine needle oil imparts peculiar and undesirable taste to the smoke, whereas the addition of menthol imparts a distinct menthol taste and produces apparent cooling effects.
I have found that the smoking qualities of tobacco are very much improved, without diminishing the flavor as smoked, the smoke cooled without a false-cooling, menthol sensation, and the throat relieved of irritation, and no foreign taste introduced into the smoke, by incorporating with tobacco from about 0.05 to about 2.0% of terpin hydrate.
While the exact mechanics of the action of terpin hydrate in tobacco during smoking are not known to me, it is probable that the smoke and gases from a burning portion of the tobacco heat the terpin hydrate in an adjacent portion to a temperature above 116 C., at which temperature water of hydration is separated, leaving terpin. Since this is an endothermic reaction, the temperature of the smoke is lowered thereby. The terpin, being volatile with steam, is carried into the mouth and throat with the smoke. There it recombines with moisture present to form terpin hydrate on the mouth and throat membranes. Terpin hydrate has a known soothing and analgesic effect on the throat mem branes.
In carrying out my invention I mix from about 2 0.05 to about 2.0%, preferably about 0.25 to about 1.0% by weight, of pure terpin hydrate to the tobacco, either by thorough mixing or spraying on to the tobacco as a solution. As solvent for the terpin hydrate I may use hot water, alcohol,
