This invention relates to improvements in electricprotection for looms of ,the type wherein a shuttle changes the electric condition of aswitch while it is in flight across the lay, and it is the general object of the invention to provide control means, for the switch enabling the latter to be held closed or open for a period of time greater than that required for the shuttle to pass it.
In co-pending application Serial No. 121,002 filed by Moss and Blanchard there is set forth an electric protection having an electric circuit containing a loom controlling relay normally energized but effective when deenergized to effect prompt loom stoppage. One of the circuits for the relay has two parallel branches one of which contains a timer switchand the other of which contains the aforesaid shuttle operated switch. Another of the circuits shown in that application shows a single circuit with the timer switch in series with the shuttle operated switch. In both circuits the timer switch is set to open at a given time in the loom. cycle when the shuttle, if on time, reaches a given point along the lay. In order to meet the foregoing conditions relative to early flight of the shuttle and the occasional slowness of operation of the timer switch it is an important object of the present invention to provide means which will hold the shuttle switch in the position to which the shuttle moves it from the time the shuttle operates it until some later time after the timer switch has had ample opportunity to return to normal.
In order that the shuttle operated switch may be in condition for operation by the shuttle incident to each pick of the loom it is a further object of the invention to insure unlocking of the shuttle switch at some time in the loom cycle between operation of the time switch and the following. normal time for the shuttle to operate the shuttle switch. This result can be accomplished as set forth hereinafter by means of a cam which has periodic operative relation with the lock to move the latter to releasing position. As shown herein this release occurs when the lay "is near its front center position, but the invention is not necessarily limited to a release operation occurring at this time.

Referring particularly to Fig. l, the loom frame It! supports a lay H having a race plate 12 secured to the upper side thereof. Right and left gangs of shifting shuttle boxes RG and LG, respectively, are mounted on the lay for placing one or another of a plurality of shuttles SI, S2
and S3 in picking position. The gangs of shuttle boxes shift vertically with respect to the lay,
box lifter rods I 3 being provided for this purpose. The loom has right and left picker sticks I4 and 15, respectively, which operate when the lay is approximately on top center position to pick the shuttle in active position across the lay and along the race plate l2. As shown in Fig. 1 the shuttle SI is in position to be picked from gang LG to gang RG.
The loom is provided with a driving motor M having a pinion l5 meshing with a gear 16 secured to the top shaft ll of the loom. The top shaft has secured thereto near the ends thereof gears I8 meshing with gears IS on the bottom shaft 20 of the loom. The picking mechanism not specifically shown herein will ordinarily be operated by the bottom shaft 20.
In the operation of the matter thus far described the lay swings backwardly and forwardly in usual manner and the actively placed shuttle is picked when the lay is moving rearwardly and is approximately on top center. The shuttle is in flight across the lay as the latter moves rearwardly and will ordinarily remain in flight until the lay reaches approximately its bottom center position, at which time the shuttle will enter the shuttle box which it is approaching. As the loom continues to run the pick of filling laid by the shuttle will be beaten into the fabric by the reed 2| as the lay reaches front center and when the lay again reaches top center position the picking cycle will be repeated.
If for any reason the shuttle should fail to clear the warp shed by the time the lay reaches a given position in the forward motion it is necessary to stop the loom in order to prevent warp breakage as the reed beats forward. In the previously mentioned copending application Serial No. 121,002 provision is made for determining the shuttle position while it is in flight along the lay between the shuttle box gangs RG and LG so that more time may be allowed for stopping the loom in the event that the shuttle position detecting means indicates that the shuttle is running slow and is likely not to clear the shed.
In the preferred form of the invention the lay is provided with a vertical bore in which is mounted a shuttle operator or closer pin or plunger 26 having a head 21 on the lower end thereof. A bracket 28 is secured as at 29 to the under side of the lay and has mounted thereon for vertical adjustment a shuttle operated switch designated generally at SS. By means of a screw threaded stem 30 and nuts 3| and 32 located respectively above and below the aligned with the plunger 26.

The shuttle switch has a contact blade 35, see Fig. 3, normally spaced from a contact 36 carried by the switch SS. The blade is normally in open position but when the plunger 26 is depressed blade 35 engages contact 36 to close the switch. This closure may be eilected by a second plunger 31 forming part of the switch SS and preferably The loom is also provided with a preferably stationary timer switch TS which is normally closed and is provided with a roll 40 located in the path of a switch opener 4| secured to the top shaft ll, see Fig. 7
As contemplated herein the loom is provided with control means which will act on the motor to stop the loom very promptly in the event the shuttle is running behind schedule. This result is accomplished by mechanism C indicated diagrarmnatically in Fig 5 for the loom motor M. The controller C is dependent upon a relay R in such manner that so long as the relay is energized the controller C will permit continued operation of the loom, but when the relay becomes deenergized controller C immediately causes loom stoppage.
The electric circuit used with the invention, set forth in Fig. 5, includes a source of electric power, such as a transformer '1, connected at one side by wire to one side of the relay R, the other side of which is connected to a wire 45. The other side of the transformer is connected to a wire 41, and between the wires 46 and 41 there are two parallel branch circuits one of which, designated at TC, is the timer circuit and the other ofwhich, shown at SC, is the shuttle switch circuit.
As set forth herein the timer circuit will be closed throughout the greater part of the loom cycle but will be open during a brief interval during which the shuttle if running on time will depress plunger 26 to effect closure of switch SS. Under these conditions one of the parallel r branch circuits is open due to loom operation while the other is closed due to shuttle operation and so long as one or the other of these branch circuits is closed the relay will remain energized. If, however, the shuttle should be running slow and fail to depress plunger 26 until after the timer switch TS has been opened the relay R will become deenergized and the loom will be stopped.
That part of the foregoing description relating more particularly to the timer and shuttle switches may be similar to the matter shown in the aforesaid copending application. As already stated, if the shuttle should be running ahead of schedule it will close the switch SS ahead of the normal time for its closure in the loom cycle and permit opening of the shuttle switch while the timer switch is still open, a condition which would result in unnecessary loom stoppa e. The present invention aims to provide means by which the shuttle switch can be held closed for a period of time longer than that required for the shuttle to pass over the plunger 26 so that even though the shuttle be early in its flight the loom can continue to run.
In carrying the invention into effect there is provided, a latch member 50 pivoted as at 51 to. the bracket 28. This member 5! extends between plungers 26 and 31 and has preferably a bent end 52 for cooperation with a lock or detent member 53 shown herein as a hook pivoted1-as catv54 tothe bracket-2aand having-a hoohihead capable of passing over the latch memberill. A light tension spring 56 interposed between thehoo'k member and bracket 23 tends normally to move the hook-head 55 to the right as-viewed in Figs. 2 and 3, or'to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3.
' The. lower end of the lock member has rotatablethereon a roll for cooperation with a cam 6! which is secured as at 62 to an inter mediate stationary' brace 63 of a the m. In operation, the shuttle switch and parts associated therewith'willl normally bein the position'shown in Fig.2, the shuttle'lswitch'being open. and theiplunger 26 being in high position and extending into the path of the shuttle. Also, the head' 55of thelo'cki member or detent will .beagainst'the end .52 of the latch 50. As the shuttle travels across the lay incident to picking it will depress plunger 26 and thereby lower the latch to a "position-which will l permitthe holding head 55 move from theposition shown in Fig. :2 to the full linewposition shownin'Fig. 3. So long as the shuttle is passingover the plunger 26 the switch SS will be closed due to shuttle presence, but after the shuttle leaves the plunger '26 the latch will be held down in locked position to maintain 'the shuttle switch SS closed. As the lay continues to move forwardly roll 60 will :engage the incline 66 of cam'Gl and will rock the detent from the full line to the dot and dash line position shown in-Fig. 3,-thereby moving the locking head 55away from the detent' andipermitting'the lat- .ter to rise'due to inherent resilience'of the switch plate 35. The shuttle switch is then open in readiness for the next flight of the'shuttle.
From Fig. 6 it will beunderstood that the period of opening represented at 1) occurs at a regularly recurring interval Y in the loom cycle :at a time when the shuttle if running properly will reach a given point along the lay, that is, the point at which the plunger 26 is located. If the shuttle is 'running .on time it will close the switch :SS slightly before, or at least not later than "the opening "of the timer switch, and the locking mechanism will hold the switch SS closed until the lay "by i its advance movement causes the cam 61 to rock the detenttorelea's'e the'shuttle switch. The shuttle switchisreleased after the timer switch has had ample time to close. If the shuttle should berunnin'g ahead of its schedule, asindicated by dotted line d in Fig. 6, it will depress plunger 26 earlier than usual, but the detentwill nevertheless keep switch SS closed '"throughout the interval of opening of the timer switch.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 9 the timer switch 10 is normallyopen and will beclosed by cam H momentarily at the time a normally closed shuttle detector switch 12 is opened by the plunger 26. These two switches 10 and 12 are in series with the relay 13 which, unlike relay R; is normally deenergizedso that the switch 14 which it controlswill normally be down against its contact 15 to maintain the previously described circuit through the loom controlling mechanismC.
Inthis modified form of the invention the circuit containing the relay R. will always be open if the shuttle is running on time, due to the fact that the switch 10 will not close until slightly after switch 12 is opened due to downward movement of the plunger 26 by the shuttle, provided the latter 'is running on time. If, however, the shuttle should be late switch 12 will be closed at the same time that switch 10 closes and the circuit throughthe relay [3 will be completed and the latter will open the switch 74, thereby enabling the control C to effect prompt stoppage of the loom.
The diagram shown in Fig. 10 is verysimilar to that shown in Fig. 6 except that switch 10 represented by line It will not be closed until a short interval after the normal time for the opening of switch 12, lines ll representing this time for normal opening of switch 12. The reason for this time relation, which is the reverse of that employed in the preferred form of the invention, is to prevent closure of the circuit through relay 13 when the shuttle is running properly. This timing feature is not essential, since the period of closure of switch 10 could be set to occur a very brief interval after the time of normal opening of switch 12 without allowing time for full energization of relay 13, but such a timing would involve the breaking of the circuit with resultant sparking at one or the other of the switches.
In the foregoing description specific forms of switches have been shown for both the timer and shuttle controlled branches of the electric circuit, butthe invention is not limited to these specific switches. Also, the lay has been shown as having shuttle boxes at both ends thereof, but the invention is not limited to a loom of this type.
It will thus be seen that the preferred form of the invention sets forth simple means by which the shuttle operated switch, once closed by the shuttle, will remain closed until a later point in the loom cycle, at which time the holding mechanism for the shuttle switch is released. In this way the shuttle switch, if closed by a shuttle running ahead of schedule, will remain closed during the interval of opening of the timer switch. t will also be seen that the unlocking mechanism is moved to releasing position at some point in the loom cycle considerably after the shuttle passes over the plunger 26, and there is therefore no necessity for employing a timer switch which will close at a precise time i'n the loom cycle. The periodof closure of a shuttle switch'may if desi red' extend until the lay nasal-- most reache'd itsfront center-position, if lock releasing means of the type employing a cam 6| is utilized. In the modified form of the invention the locking mechanism acts to hold the shuttle operated switch open and approximately the same length of time that it holds a shuttle operated switch of the preferred form closed. The lock can therefore be used with both forms of the in vention.
Having thus described the invention it will be seen that changes and modifications of the foregoing specific disclosure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new is:
1. In protection means for a loom having a shuttle which when running properly passes a given point along the lay at a given time in the loom cycle, a movable electric switch operator located at said given point normally extending into the path of the shuttle and moved by the latter when the shuttle passes said given point, an electric switch capable of being in either open or closed condition thereof and normally in one of said conditions and moved to the other condition when the operator is moved by the shuttle, lock means effective to hold the switch in said other condition, means releasing the lock means to enable the switch to return to said one condition thereof prior to the next arrival of the shuttle at said given point along the lay, electric circuit means including an electromagnetic device and said switch, and loom stoppingmeans controlled by said electromagnetic device effective to stop the loom upon failure of the shuttle to move said operator and cause said switch to be in said other condition thereof at said given time in the cycle of the loom.
27 In protection means for a loom having a shuttle which when in flight traverses a path along the lay and when running properly passes a given point along the lay at a given time in the loom cycle, a movable electric switch operator under said path of the shuttle located at said given point normally extending upwardly into said path and depressed by the shuttle when the latter passes over the operator, an electric switch capable of being in either open or closed condition and normally in one of said conditions and being moved to the other condition thereof when the operator is depressed by the shuttle, lock means efi'ective to hold the switch in said other condition, means releasing the lock means to enable the switch to return to said one condition thereof on the next beat-up of the lay, electric circuit means including an electromagnetic device and said electric switch, and loom stopping means controlled by said electromagnetic device effective to stop the loom upon failure of the shuttle to depress said operator and cause said electric switch to be in said other condition thereof at said given time in the loom cycle.
3. In protection means for a loom having a shuttle which when running properly passes a given point along the lay at a given time in the loom cycle, a movable electric switch operator located at said given point normally extending into the path of the shuttle and moved by the latter when the shuttle passes said given point, an electric switch capable of being in either open or closed condition thereof and normally in one of said conditions and moved to the other condition when the operator is moved by the shuttle, lock means on the lay effective to hold the switch in said other condition, means dependent upon motion, of the lay releasing the lock means to enable the switch to return to said one condition thereof prior to the next arrival of the shuttle at said given point along the lay, electric circuit means including an electromagnetic device and said switch, and loom stopping means controlled by said electromagnetic device effective to stop the loom upon failure of the shuttle to move said operator and cause said switch to be in said other condition thereof at said given time in the cycle of the loom.
4. In electric protection means for a loom having a shuttle and lay, normally open electric switch means closed by the shuttle at a given time in the loom cycle if the shuttle is running on time, a timer electric switch normally closed but opening for an interval beginning substantially at said time in the cycle and closing at the end of said interval, means acting independently of the shuttle holding the switch means closed from the time of closure thereof by the shuttle until a point in the loom cycle subsequent to said interval, and electrically controlled means efifec tive to stop the loom if the switch means is open during said interval.
5. In electric protection means for a loom hav ing a shuttle and lay, normally open electric switch means closed by the shuttle at a given time in the loom cycle if the shuttle is running on time, a timer electric switch normally closed but opening for an interval beginning substantially at said time in the cycle and closing at the end of said interval, lock means holding the switch means closed from the time of closure thereof by the shuttle until a point in the loom cycle subsequent to said interval, and electrically controlled means effective to stop the loom if the switch means is open during said interval.
6. In electric protection means for a loom having a shuttle and lay, normally open electric switch means closed by the shuttle at a given time in each one pick cycle of the loom if the shuttle is running on time, a timer electric switch normally closed but opening for an interval beginning substantially at said time in each cycle and closing at the end of the interval, holding means independent of the shuttle maintaining the switch means closed after closure thereof by the shuttle, means cooperating with said holding means causing the latter to release the switch means at a time subsequent to said interval and prior to said given time in the next one pick cycle of the loom, and electrically controlled means effective to stop the loom if the switch means is open during said interval.
7. In electric protection means for a loom having a shuttle and lay, normally open electric switch means closed by the shuttle at a given time in each one pick cycle of the loom if the shuttle is running on time, a timer electric switch normally closed but opening for an interval beginning substantially at said given time in each cycle and closing at the end of the interval, holding means independent of the shuttle maintaining the switch means closed after closure thereof by the shuttle, means cooperating with said holding means causing the latter to release the switch means at a point in the loom cycle subsequent to said interval but within the one pick cycle in wh ch the switch means is closed, and electrically controlled means effective to stop the loom if the switch means is open during said interval.
8. In electric protection means for a loom having a shuttle and lay, normally open electric switch means closed by the shuttle at a given time in each one pick cycle of the loom if the shuttle is running" on tlmaiatimer 'electric switch normally closed but opening for an inter val beginning substantially at said time in each cycle and closing at the end of the interval, holding meanson the lay independent of the shuttle maintaining the switch means closed after clo' sure thereof by the shuttle, means dependent upon motion of the lay cooperating with said holding means causing the latter to release the switch means at a time subsequent to said interval and prior to said given time in the next one pick cycle of the loom, and electrically controlled means effective to stop the loom if the switch means is open during said interval;
9. In electric protection means for a loom having a shuttle which when running properly-passes a given point along the lay at a given time in the 100m cycle, the loom having control means including an electric relay effective when the relay is energized to permit continued loom operation but effective when the relay is deenergized to cause loom stoppage, electric circuit means including-the relay and two parallel branch circuits, an electric timer switch in one of said branch circuits opening for an interval at said time in the loom cycle and closing at the end of the interval, normally open electric shuttle switch means in the other branch circuit closed by the shuttle when the'latter reaches said point along the lay, and control means for the shuttle' switch means including a'lock effective whenever the shuttle switch means is closed to maintain the latter closed and including a releaser for the lock effective subsequent to said interval to effect opening of said shuttle switch means.
10. In electric protection means for a loom having a lay and a shuttle, normally open electric switch means closed by the shuttle at a given time in each one pick cycle of the loom if the shuttle is running properly, loom controlling means including an electric relay effective when the relay is energized to permit continued loom operation buteffective'when the relay is deenergized to stop the loom, electric circuit means including the relay and two parallel branch circuits, a normally closed timer electric switch in one of'said' branch circuits opening at said time in each one-pick cycle of the loom for a brief interval and closing at the end of said interval, said switch means be-' ing in the other branch circuit, lock means effective upon closure of the switch means by the shuttle to maintain the switch means closed, and means operative due to motion of the lay causing the lock to unlock the switch means at a point in the loom cycle subsequent to said interval.
11. In electric protection means for a loom having a shuttle which when running properly passes a given point along the lay at a given time in the 100m cycle, the loom having controlling means including an electric relay effective when therelay is energized to permit continued loom operation but efiective when the relayis deenergized to stop the loom, electric circuit means including said relay and two parallel branch electric'circuits, a loom controlled timer switch in one of said branch circuits normally closed but open due to loom operation for a brief interval at said given time in the loom cycle, a normally open shuttle operated switch tending normally to be in open position, means operated by the shuttle when the latter reaches said point along the lay effective to close the shuttle operated switch, means holding the shuttle operated switch in closed position after the shuttle has passed said point along the lay, and mechanism moving the 10 holding means to -n'on-holding position relative to the-shuttle operated switch subsequent to said interval, whereupon-the shuttle operated switch moves to open p'osition.

In electric protection means for a 100m having a shuttle and lay, normally closed electric switch means opened by the shuttle at a given time in each one pick cycle of the loom if the shuttle is running on time, a timer electric switch normally open but closing for an interval beginning substantially at said time in each cycle and opening at the end of the interval, holding means independent of the shuttle maintaining the switch means open after opening thereof by the shuttle, means cooperating with said holding means causing the latter to release the switch means at a time subsequent to said interval and prior to said given time in the next one pick cycle of the loom, and electrically controlled means effective to stop the loom if the switch means is closed during said interval.
17. In electric protection means for a loom having a shuttle and lay, normally closed electric switch means opened by the shuttle at a given time in each one pick cycle of the loom if the shuttle is running on time, a timer electric switch normally open but closing for an interval beginning substantially at said given time in each cycle and opening at the end of the interval, holding means independent of the shuttle maintaining the switch means open after opening thereof by the shuttle, means cooperating with said holding means causing the latter to release the switch means at a point in the loom cycle subsequent to said interval but within the one pick cycle in which the switch means isopened, and electrically controlled means efiective to stop the loom if the switch means is closed during said interval.
18. In electric protection means for a loom having a shuttle which when running properly passes a given point along the lay at a given time in the loom cycle, the loom having control means including an electric relay effective when deenergized to permit continued loom operation but effective when energized to cause the control means to effect loom stoppage, electric circuit means including the relay, an electric timer switch and a shuttle switch in series, the timer switch being normally open and closing for an interval at said time in the loom cycle and opening at the end of the interval, said shuttle switch being normally closed and being opened by the shuttle when the latter reaches said point along the lay, and control means for the shuttle switch including a'lock efiective whenever the shuttle switch is opened by the shuttle to maintain said shuttle switch open, said control means including a releaser for the lock effective subsequent to said interval to cause the lock to release the shuttle switch, whereupon the latter returns to the normal closed condition thereof.

In electric protection means for a loom having a shuttle and a lay, normally open electric switch means closed by the shuttle at a given time in each one pick cycle of the loom when the shuttle is running on time, loom controlling means including an electric relay effective when the relay is energized to permit continued loom operation but effective when the relay is deenergized to stop the loom, a second electric switch means normally closed, electric circuit means including the relay and both of said switch means and dependent for closure thereof to maintain the relay energized upon closure of one or the other of said switch means, said second switch means opening for a brief interval at said given time in each loom cycle, the first named switch means if closed by the shuttle when the latter is running ahead of time tending to open after the shuttle passes said first switch means and while said second switch means is open during said interval, lock means efiective when said first switch means is closed, whether the shuttle be running on time or ahead of time, to maintain the first switch means closed, and releasing means moving the locking means to non-locking position with respect to the first switch means at a time in the loom cycle subsequent to said interval and prior to the said given time in the next one pick cycle of the loom.

In electric protection means for a loom having a shuttle and a lay, normally open electric circuit means closed at a given time in the loom cycle if the shuttle is running on time, a second electric circuit means normally closed but opening for an interval beginning substantially at said time in the cycle and closing at the end of said interval, means acting independently of the shuttle holding the first circuit means closed from the time of closure thereof until a point in the loom cycle subsequent to said interval, and electric means controlled by said first and second circuit means effective to stop the loom if the first circuit means is open during said interval.
