This invention relates to an electric lamp assembly of the pin-up type and more particularly to the mounting for the lamp bulb and the shade therefor.
An object of this invention is to provide a mounting for a lamp bulb utilizing sheet material parts which are so constructed and arranged as to be easily fabricated and assembled and at the same time provide a neat and attractive lamp that is inexpensive, sturdy, dependable and efficient.
Other objects and advantages reside in the construction of parts, the combination thereof and the mode of operation, as will become more apparent from the following description.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the lamp shown in a vertical and hanging position.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view showing the lamp in a horizontal position.
Figure 4 is another side elevational view with the shade removed, showing portions in section.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a c lindrical member constituting one of several members cooperating to form the shade for thelamp.
Figure 6 is a transverse cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-6 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character I 6 indicates a sheet material base member. This may be made from sheet metal, plastic or any other suitable material. The base member It) includes a main body portion l2 merging into laterally disposed converging flanges i4 and the diagonally disposed end flanges Hi, the flanges and the main body portion cooperating to form a base with bevelled edges. Each of the end flanges H3 is provided with inwardly directed tongues 20, each provided with an aperture 22, that may be used in hanging the lamp upon a hook or the like. The tongues 20 being struck out of the end flanges leave openings 18. The main body portion I2 is provided with a plurality of tongues 24 that are directed upwardly, as viewed in Figure 4, before the shade assembly is mounted in position, which will be described more fully later.
The main body portion l2 also supports a bracket 39 by means of a suitable rivet 32. The bracket 30 is provided with a pair of cars 34 used in supporting a lamp socket 36 that may be made from molded material and provided with a fluted portion -38 terminating in a flange 40 forming a channel into which the upper portion 42 of the bracket 30 projects. A switch knob 44 is used for turning on and ofi the light. The socket 36 is adapted to receive a conventional lamp bulb 4b. The longitudinal axis of the lamp bulb extends parallel to the main body portion I2 of the base.
The shade assembly includes a pair of cylindrical sheet material bands or rings 53 forming hand-like portions simulating cylindrical seg ments and a sheet material member 52, larger in diameter, forming a helix. Each of the members and 52 is provided with a plurality of rectangular openings or slots 5%, thro gh hich the tongues 24 project. In assembling, the large helix 52 is first positioned on the tongues and then the two cylindrical band members 53 are positioned on the tongues, one adjacent the end of the lamp bulb and one adacent the socket. The two end cylindrical band members 5] are arranged in spaced relation from each other, the helix 52 being so positioned th t it pa t y overlaps both of the cylindrical band members 59. The exposed portion of the helix 52, that is, the portion extending from one side of the base around to the opposite side of the base, has the appearance of a helical segment.
By selecting various color combinations for the two bands so and the helix 52, a very attractive lamp assembly is provided, especially when the lamp is illuminated. The inner surface of the helix 52 forms a light reflecting surface, which enhances the appearance of the lamp assembly when illuminated. Especially does this provide a beautiful efiect when the proper color combinations are used. After the helix and the two bands 55) have been placed in position, the tongues are then bent over into the position 60, best seen in Figure 6. This results in an easily constructed lamp assembly that is inexpensive, but at the same time efiicient, dependable and attractive. Furthermore, the two cylindrical bands and the helical member have the app-earance as though the cylindrical bands and the helical member were formed from one continuous strip of metal wound to form a band on each end of the shade, the intervening portion simulating a scroll or helix.
The lamp assembly is extremely light in weight if it is made from sheet metal or other sheet material. If it is made from plastics, it may also be made from light weight material that may be translucent.
This lamp assembly lends itself either for temporary or permanent use in a particular location. For example, it may be used in a sick room, furnishing indirect light, and when not in use, it
may be stored away. It may be used as a permanent wall bracket, or it may be used on a desk, on a table or other pieces of furniture and in numerous other places.
Although the preferred embodiment of the device has been described, it will be understood that within the purview of this invention various changes may be made in the form, details, proportion and arrangement of parts, the combination thereof and mode of operation, which generally stated consist in a device capable of carrying out the objects set forth, as disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. A lamp assembly for use with a bulb, said assembly including a base having angularly disposed marginal flanges cooperating to form a base having bevelled edges, a bracket supported upon the base, a lamp socket attached to the bracket so arranged that the longitudinal axis of the lamp socket extends parallel to the main body portion of the base, a shade assembly, said shade assembly including a pair of cylindrical bands one of which overlies the top of the bulb and the other overlies the socket, and a helical sheet member spanning the distance between the cylindrical bands, said helical member overlapping a portion of the bands and having a diameter larger than the bands, said cylindrical bands and the helical member cooperating to form a shade assembly for the lamp and means for securing the shade assembly to the base.

A lamp as embly for use with a bulb, said assembly including a base having marginally disposed converging flanges cooperating to form a base having bevelled edges, said base being provided with a plurality of tongues, a bracket supported upon the base, a lamp socket attached to the bracket so arranged that the longitudinal axis of the lamp socket extends parallel to the main-body portion of the base, a shade assembly, said shade assembly including a pair of cylindrical bands, one of which overlies the top of the bulb and. the other overlies the socket, and a helical member spanning the distance between the cylindrical bands, said helical member overlapping a portion of the bands and having a diameter larger than the bands, said bands and said helical member being provided with a p urality of openings, the tongues in the base projecting through the openings and being seated against the inner sides of the bends and the helical member to secure the shade assembly in position.
3. A lamp assembly for use with a bulb, said assembly including a sheet metal base having angularly disposed marginal flanges cooperating to form a base having bevelled edges, said base having a main body portion provided with a plurality of tongues, a bracket supported upon the base, a lamp socket attached to the bracket so arranged that the longitudinal axis of the lamp socket extends parallel to the main body portion of the base, and a shade assembly, said shade assembly including a pair of cylindrical metallic bands one of which overlies the top of the bulb and the other overlies the socket, and a helical sheet metal member spanning the distance between the cylindrical bands, said helical member overlapping a portion of the bands and having a diameter larger than the bands, said cylindrical bands and the helical member cooperating to form a shade assembly for the lamp, said cylindrical bands and said helical member being provided with a plurality of apertures through which the tongues project, the tongues resting against the inner side of the bands and the helical member so as to secure the shade assembly in position.
4. A lamp assembly for use with a bulb, said assembly including a sheet metal base having angularly disposed marginal flanges cooperating to form a base having bevelled edges, a bracket supported upon the base, a lamp socket attached to the bracket, said lamp socket being so arranged that the longitudinal axis of the lamp socket extends parallel to the main body portion of the base, a shade assembly, said shade assembly including a pair of metallic cylindrical bands, one of which overlies the top of the bulb and the other overlies the socket, and a helical sheet metal member spanning the distance between the cylindrical bands, said helical member overlapping a portion of the bands and having a diameter larger than the bands, said cylindrical bands and the helical member cooperating to form a shade assembly for the lamp, and means for securing the shade assembly to the base.

A lamp assembly for use with a bulb, said assembly including a base, a bracket supported upon the base, a lamp socket attached to the bracket, said lamp socket being so arranged that the longitudinal axis of the lamp socket extends parallel to the base, a shade assembly, said shade assembly including a pair of cylindrical bands one of which overlies the top of the bulb and the other overlies the socket, and a helical member spanning the distance between the cylindrical bands, said helical member overlapping a portion of the bandsand having a diameter larger than the bands, said cylindrical bands and the helical member cooperating to form a shade assembly for the lamp, and means for securing the shade assembly to the base.

A lamp assembly for use with a bulb, said assembly including a sheet metal base having a plurality of tongues, a bracket supported upon the base, a lamp socket attached to the bracket, said lamp socket being so arranged that the longitudinal axis of the lamp socket extends parallel to the main body portion of the base, and a shade assembly including a pair of, cylindrical bands, one of which surrounds the top of the bulb and the other surrounds the socket, and a helical member spanning the distance between the cylindrical bands, said helical member overlapping a portion of the bands and having a diameter larger than the bands, the ends of the helical member being provided with apertures through which the tongues project, said bands being provided with apertures through which some of the tongues project, some of the tongues projecting through both the apertures in the helical member and one of the cylindrical bands. some of the tongues being positioned. against the side of the bands and some against the side of the helical member.

A lamp assembly for use with a bulb, said assembly including a base, a lamp socket, means for attaching the lamp socket to the base, a shade assembly, said shade assembly including a pair of cylindrical bands one of which overlies the top of the bulb and the other overlies the socket, and a helical member spanning the distance between the cylindrical bands, said helical member overlapping a portion of the cylindrical bands and having a diameter larger than the cylindrical bands, said cylindrical bands and the helical member cooperating to form a shade assembly for the lamp, and means for securing the shade assembly to the base,

A lamp assembly for use with a bulb, said assembly including a base, a lamp socket, means for attaching the lamp socket to the base, said means being so constructed and arranged that the longitudinal axis of the lamp socket extends parallel to the main body portion of the base, a shade assembly, said shade assembly including a pair of cylindrical bands, one of which overlies the top of the bulb and the other overlies the socket, and a, helical member spanning the distance between the cylindrical bands, said bands and said helical member cooperating to simulate a shade wherein the bands and the helical member are made from one continuous sheet of material so wound that it has the appearance of two cylindrical bands, one on each end of the shade and the intervening portion simulating a scroll or a helix, and means for securing the shade assembly to the base.
9. A lamp assembly for use with a bulb, said assembly including a base, a lamp socket, means for attaching the lamp socket to the base, said means being so constructed and arranged that the longitudinal axis of the lamp socket extends member having a helical segment, said band-' like portions and said helical segment cooperating to form a shade assembly for the lamp, and means for securing the shade assembly to the base.
