Inventor WM GEORGE s. TIFFANY, or LoNDoN, oANADA.
DRAIN-TILE MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,614, dated May 30, 1882,
Application filed March 17, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SYLVESTER TIFFANY, of London, Canada, have invented Improvements in Machines for Making Drain- Tiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that part of a draintile machine called the cutting-table, and it consists in the mechanism for raising and lowering the table, whereby the table may be quickly raised or lowered to adapt it to receive the tilesfrom the die of the machine, and in such a way that the table will always be level; and, secondly, in the means used to fasten the table at any plane of elevation to which it may be raised.
Cutting-tables have heretofore been raised and lowered by means of racks and cog-wheels, which are cumbersome and expensive, and by means of hand-screws, raising one end of the table and then the other, requiring consider-able time, labor, and skill to raise or lower and adjust the table to a level.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective of a cutting-table for a drain-tile machine embodying myinvention, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
The tile as it issues from the die passes over the rollers J, which have hearings in the frame B, and to the side of the frame 13 a cuttingframe, A, is hinged, these parts being substantially the same as in cutting-tables in common use. Beneath the frame B is a frame, 0, of the same width, and the two frames are connected by four hinges, two on each side, I I I I. Each hinge may be a plain wire bar having a hole near each end. A loosely-fittin g .bolt passes through each hole, one into the frame 0 and one into the frame 13. The hinges or hinged supports I I I I are so attached to the frames B and G that the frames will be parallel and the hinges on the some side of the frames B 0 will be parallel.
It will be seen that the two frames will be connected to each other on each side like the two bars of a parallel ruler, and that the frame B may be raised or lowered, turning on the (No model.)
hinges l I I I, and will always be parallel to the frame 0.
To support the cutting-table at any point to which it may be raised, I fasten two slotted bars, H H, one on each side of the frame or cutting-table B, by loosely-fitting bolts, so that the bars maybe turned freelyon the bolts, and pass a bolt or binding-rod, K, through the frame 0 and through the slots in the bars II B. On one end of the rod K is a head, and on the other end a screw-thread and a crank-nut, L. By turning the crank-nut L so as to bind the slotted bars H H against the frame 0 the two frames B 0 become rigidly attached to each. other.
The foundation-frame D and rockers E E EE are the same as described in apatent (numbered 156,188) of the United States granted to me, and the parts may be used with the improvements described in this specification in connection with machines that mold tiles continuously; but for machines that mold intermittingly--allowing time to cut off while the tiles are not moving-simply a suitable foundation would he required for the frame U.
The same movement of the frame B in relation to the frame 0 may be efi'ected with a greater and even a less number of hinges or hinged supports I I I 1, and the form may be varied. I do not therefore limit my claim to the number or the particularform of the hinge represented.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, in the cutting-table of a drain-tile machine, of the hinges or hinged supports I I I I and frame 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination of the slotted bars H H, binding-rod K,crank-nut L, and frame 0 with the cuttingtable of a machine for making drain-tiles, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified. 1
GEO. S. TIFFANY.
