Another object of the invention is to provide a valve spring compressor of the character indicated above comprising a holder adapted to receive a valve assembly therein and a hand lever removably and adjustably mounted on said holder and adapted to engage either end of the valve stem and to compress the valve spring to facilitate the removal or replacement of the spring retainer commonly used in connection with valves of the kind indicated above or similar valves. A further object of the invention is to provide a valve spring compressor of the characterindicated above adapted to center .the valve stem with regard to the valve springdu'ring the process of compressing said spring. I
. The invention consists in the detallSOf construction and in the combination anda'rrangement of the several parts of my "improved valve spring compressors whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describethe same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front perspective of a holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective of an abutment tool as herein embodied;
Figure 3 is a view in front elevation with a portion in section illustrating a valve assembly within the holder and before compression of the spring, the associated lever in fragment and perspective;
Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 3 but showing the spring compressed;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 but with the valve assembly reversely applied;
Figure 6 is an elevation view of a modified form of the invention;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view in top plan of the holder as comprised in Figure 6; and
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view in perspective of an end portion of the lever herein embodied.
The valve spring compressor as embodied in Figures '1 to 5- comprises a holder H having a semi-cylindrical portion l0 adapted to receive the V 2 tapped end portion H of the valve stem it of a Ford mushroom encl valve v or a similar valve with the helical spring 13 and the guide bushing l4 mounted on said valve stem. To accommodate the valve head It the holder H has an enlarged semi-cylindrical portion 16 of longer radius than the first named holder portion to, The two semicylindrical holder portions lfl and it are permanently connected wi'th each other by means of a half conical intermediate portioiiii and form an integral coaxial unit.

A hand lever 20 is preferably "made from flat iron and has a lever head 21 and an elongated lever handle 22. The lever head 2| extends in a substantially right angle from the lever handle but is curved so that the inner surface of the head is convex. On the end portion of the lever head a centrally locatedfinger 23 i'sfformed the outer end portion 24 of which extends inwardly at an obtuse angle.
- A plurality of preferably rectangular holes 25 are arranged 'in't'he enlarged holder portion l6 adjacent-to alongitudin'al edge thereof When the spring retainer l9'i's to be removed from the valve stem I2, the valve assembly is placed in the holder H in the position shown in Figure 3. The lever 20 is mounted on the holder H by inserting the finger 23 through a selected hole 25. By gripping the holder H and the lever handle 22 and forcibly pivoting the latter toward the former the curved lever head 2| engaging the valve head l5 urges said valve head toward the narrower holder portion H1. The flange 26 conventionally formed on the valve stem I2 adjacent to the valve head l5 engages the guide bushing 14 which in turn engages and compresses the valve spring I3, so that the tapped end ll of the valve stem will slide outwardly from the holder H and the spring retainer l9 may be removed easily and readily. By releasing the pressure on the lever 20 the valve assembly is released and may be easily disassembled.
By mounting a guide bushing l4 and a valve spring 13 on a valve stem l2, arranging these assembled parts in a holder and compressing the l spring in the manner described above, a spring retainer I9 may be easily mounted on the valve stem I2 completing the assembly of the valve.
When an assembled valve of the kind described is to be mounted in a motor a well known removable abutment tool 21 is arranged on the valve stem I2 between the guide bushing I4 and the flange 26. In order to facilitate this arrangement the valve assembly is placed in the holder H so that the valve head I5 is located outside of the holder adjacent to the flanged end of the narrower portion thereof. The tapped end I I of the valve stem I2 is engaged by the curved lever head 2|. The bushing I4 is forced against the flanges I8 and the spring I3 is compressed so that the valve stem I2 slides through the bushing and the stem flange 26 is spaced from the bushing permitting the arrangement of the abutment tool 21 on the valve stem I2 between the stem flange 26 and the bushing I4. When the pressure on the lever handle 22 is released the tool is held removably in position by the pressure of the spring I3 on the guide bushing I4.
In Figure 6 a slightly modified form of the holder for valve spring compressors .in accordance with the present invention is shown. The holder as embodiedin Figure 6 has a semi-cylindrical portion 28 similar to the holder portion I0, an enlarged holder portion 29 similar to the holder portion I6 and a half conical intermediate holder portion 30 similar to the intermediate holder portion I'I.
The outer end portion of the narrower holder portion 28 is offset so that one-half of said end portion extends beyond the other half as indicated at 3]. Onth'e outer end of the longer half of the holderend portion an inwardly projecting flange 32 is'formed, the inner edge surface of which isconcaved as at 33 to conform to the contour of thevalve stem I2 and the flange 32 is long enough to extend between two coils of the A I spring I3 and to'engage thevalve stem I2 and hold it in central [position with respect to the spring I 3. On the shorter end portion of the holder portionZB an inwardly projecting flange 34 is formed similar to the flanges I 8 and adapted" to project between a pair of coils of the spring I3 located inwardly, from the coils engaged by the flange 32.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a valve spring compressor constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim:
In a valve spring compressor, a holder comprising an upper semi-cylindrical portion, an intermediate outwardly flared portion and a lower semi-cylindrical portion, a semi-circular flange inturned from the top end of said upper portion, said lower,v portion having a vertically aligned set of spaced slotted openings formed adjacent one of its vertical edges, a hand lever having an elongated handle portion normally disposed vertically alongside the holder, and an arcuate head portion bent atright angles from the lower end of said handle portion, the free end of said head portion being adapted .to be selectively engaged in said slotted openings to fulcrum on the lower edge of the engaged opening to affect compression of the valve spring between the arcuate portion of said head portion and'said flange, when the handle portion of saidlever is swung outward and downward relatively to the holder, the connected end portion of said head portion having sliding contact with the other vertical edge of the lower portion of the holder during the operative movements of said lever.
