COMPRESSION VALVE.
Application filed January 18, 1926. Serial No. 82,115.
This invention relates generally to gas compressors and consists of certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View through a pump embodying my invention taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a bottom planview of the detachable head.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the spring valve.
Referring now to the drawing, 1 is a pump cylinder in which the gas is adapted to be compressed, 2 is a plate having a short narrow slot 3 at the center thereof constituting the outlet port for the cylinder, and 4 is a detachable head having a central exhaust passage 5 for the compressed gas in substantial vertical alignment with the slot 3. As shown, this head 4 is preferably bolted to the cylinder and is provided with an elongated transversely extending recess 6 that crosses the central passage 5 and registers with the slot 3. To provide an efiicient construction, this recess 6 has portions of substantial equal length upon opposite sides of the passage 5 and is provided at diametrically opposite sides of the passage 5 with laterally extending segmental extensions 7.
For controlling the passage. of the gas from the cylinder through the slot 3 to the passage 5, there is a light spring metal valve 8 in the elongated recess 6 having a narrow base 9 that normally lies flat upon the plate 2 over the slot 3. As shown. this base is provided at its opposite ends with upwardly converging return-bent arms 10 that prefcrably terminate in the inwardly extending longitudinally curved fingers 11 for engagement with the top wall 12 of the recess 6. Before assembly, the distance between the base 9 and curved fingers 11 of the valVe is greater than the depth of the recess 6, hence when the parts are assembled, the returnbent arms 10 will be under compression. As a result the curved surfaces of the fingers 11 will be pressed against the top wall 12 of the recess 6 adjacent to the central passage 5, while the central portion of the base 9 will be forced against the plate 2 at the edges of the slot 3 thereby insuring a tight seal- In use, the base 9 of the valve will seat against the plate 2 as described when the piston in the cylinder is upon its suction stroke and will remain seated during the reverse or compression stroke until a pressure is reached in the cylinder which is higher than the pressure in the exhaust passage 5, whereupon the pressure in the cylinder will bow the base 9 upwardly thereby permitting the compressed gas to pass laterally through the segmental recesses 7 to the central exhaust passage 5.
Thus,- from the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the valve will operate automatically for controlling the passage of the gas through the slot 3. Inasmuch as the return-bent arms 10 are always under compression when the parts are assembled it will also be apparent that the ends of the base 9* will have a sliding engagement with the plate 2 while the curved fingers 11 will have a rolling engagement with the top wall 12 of the recess 6, hence the seating and unseating of the valve base will be quiet irrespective of whether the compressor is operating at high or low speed. Moreover these curved fingers 11 eleminate undue friction and permit the valve to align itself automatically with the slot 3 as conditions may warrant. Hence, movable fulcrums are provided for the base 9 which will compensate for any irregularities in assembly or operation of the va ve.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantage of my invention will be readily a parent, I desire to have it understood t at I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A valve having a substantially fiat base portion, and return-bent arms at the ends thereof terminating in curved portions spaced longitudinally of said base.
2. A valve constructed of resilient material having a substantially flat base engageable with a seat, and compressible projections for seating the base.
3. A spring metal valve having a substantially fiat base engageable with a seat, and
converging extensions for seating the base.
1. A valve having a substantially flat base engageable with a seat, and yieldable converging portions integral with the base for seating said base.
5. A valve having a substantially flat base engageable with a seat, and projections on the base having curved portions for rolling engagement with a suitable fixed part for holding said base against its seat.
6. The combination with a compressor cylinder, and a head therefor having a gas passage, of a plate between said parts having an opening in communication with said passage, and a valve having a substantially fiat base engageable with the plate to close the opening and having a projection integral with said base and engageable with the head for automatically seating the base.
7. The combination with a compressor cylinder, and a head therefor having a gas passage, of a plate between said parts having a narrow slot in substantial vertical alignment with the passage, and a valve having a substantially fiat'base engageable with the plate to close the slot having return-bent portions engageable with the head for automatically seating the base.
8. The combination with a compressor cylinder, and a head therefor having a gas passage and an elongated recess in communication with said passage, of a plate between said parts having an opening in communication with said passage, and a resilient valve for controlling the flow of gas through the opening having an arm held under compression by a wall of said recess, and a substantially flat base held by said arm against said plate over said opening.
9. The combination with a compressor cylinder, of a head therefor having a gas passage and a recess crossing the" passage, a plate between said head and cylinder having an opening in communication with the passage, and a valve in the recess having a substantially fiat base engageable with the plate for controlling the passage of gas through the opening, said valve having yieldable arms terminating in inwardly extending curved portions adapted to engage a wall of said recess for seating said base against said plate.
10. The combination with a compressor cylinder, of a head therefor having a gas passage and a recess crossing the passage, a
plate between said head and cylinder hav-,
ing an opening in communication with said passage, and a valve in the recess having a substantially flat base engageable with the plate for regulating the flow of gas through the opening having return-bent portions engageable with a wall of the recess, said recess having a lateral extension at one side of the passage for conveying the gases from the opening to said passage.
11. The combination with a compressor cylinder, and a head therefor having a gas passage and a recess in communication with said passage, of a plate between said head and cylinder having an opening in communication with said recess, and a valve having a base engageable with the plate to close the opening and having spacedcurved portions for rolling engagement with a wall of said recess.
12. The combination with a compressor cylinder, of a head therefor having a gas passage and a recess crossing said passage, a plate between said head and cylinder having an opening in communication with. said recess, and a valve in the recess having a substantially fiat base engageable with the plate to close the opening, said recess having lateral extensions of diametrically opposite sides of the passage for conveying the gases from the opening to said passage.
13. A spring metal valve having a sub stantially fiat base engageable with a suitable seat, and compressible arms projecting from said base terminating in inwardly extending curved portions engageable with a fixed part for holding said base against its seat.
14. The combination with a compressor cylinder, and a head therefor having a gas passage and an elongated recess in communication with said passage, of a plate between said parts having an opening in communication with said passage, and a valve for controlling the flow of gas through the opening having a substantially flat base engageable with the plate, and an arm having a rolling engagement with a wall of the recess aforesaid yieldably pressing the base against the plate.
15. The combination with a compressor cylinder, and a head therefor having a gas passage and an elongated recess in communication with said passage, of a plate between said parts having an opening in communication with said passage, and a resilient valve for controlling the flow of gas through the opening having a substantially flat base engageable with the plate, and arm cooperating with the side walls of said recess to prevent the base from sticking and for automatically aligning the base with the opening in the plate.
16. A valve constructed of a single piece of resilient material having a substantially fiat base portion and converging arms projecting from the base'having inwardly exf tending longitudinally curved portions.
