PERMANENT WINDOW-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,551, dated May 30, 1882.
Application filed March 23, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. BRADFORD, ot' Belleville, in the county of Republic and State of Kansas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Permanent Window Guards or Screens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use thetsame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficient screen or guard adapted to be secured permanently on the outside of buildings, &c., and protect the windows therein from damage by wind, hail, rain, or other causes.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of part of a building provided with my device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a like view on the line m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is adetail view in perspective, and Fig. 5 is a modification.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the screen, which is preferably constructed of wire-gauze or woven wire.
B B are longitudinal or upright metallic strips bent into C form around the edges of the wire-screen A, thus protecting them frombeing unwoven or otherwise damaged.
0 O are like strips, which are bent into C form around the top and bottom edges of the screen A, and also over the edges of strips B B to protect thelatter. These securing-strips are secured to the side of the structure by means of nails D, driven entirely through the strips and wire, and the latter is thus prevented l'rom stretching or becoming loose. At the same time all its edges are unexposed and thoroughly protected.
If desired, the upper ends of the strips may be continued outwardly and serrated or provided with prongs, as shown at E,Fig. 5 ot'the drawings, so that they may be bentover and driven into the wood to serve the function of the nails at the corners.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the screen A, of the securing-strips B B O O, bent around the edges of the screen, the latter strips being also bent over the edges of the former, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
