Description

(No Model.) H I E. 'BARNARD.
. HALTER. No. 258,543. Patented May 30, 1882.
UNKTED Sr-Arns arnnr amen.
ED'WARD BARNARD, OF ROME, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY G. MAXWELL, OF SAME PLACE.
HALTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,543, dated May 30, 1882.
Application filed February 11, 1882. (No model To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BARNARD, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Halters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make'and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in halters, the object of the same being to provide improved corner-pieces therefor, so as to enable the head and nose portion of the halter to be made of one continuous piece of material and secured in proper position without seam or rivet.
With these ends in view my invention consists in certain details in construction and coinbinations of parts, as will be more fully explained, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a halter provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a front and rear plan view of the right-hand corner-piece, showing the manner of securing the halter-strap therein. Fig.3is a plan view of the left-hand corner-piece.
A represents the right-hand cast-metal corner-piece, provided with a series of elongated slots, through which the strap B is passed, and by which it is secured in proper position and form. This piece is also provided at its lower rear end with a loop, 0, formed integral therewith, for the attachment of the chin-piece D. The series of elongated slots above referred to consist of the vertical end slots, E and F, the rib a in front of the slot F being bent or carried outward, as shown in the drawings, so as to enable the strap B to be passed through the said slot in a parallel line to the corner-piece, instead of at a right angle thereto. This corner-piece is also provided with the two vertical parallel slots G and H, the latter being separated by the slightly-elevated rib b, which latter is provided with a biting-edge on its outer side or face, and the portion 0 also with a biting-edge on its outer side or face. These biting-edges are adapted to engage with the strap and prevent it from being forcibly withdrawn from the slots.
The head and nose pieces J K of my improved halter are made of a single piece of any suitable material, B, which latter is passed through the corner-pieces in the following manner, starting with the corner-piece on the righthand side: One end of the strap B is firstpassed behind the rib a, through the slot F, over the face of the piece A, through the slot E to the rear of the piece, and one corner thereof is carried through the diagonal slot M, and is retained therein by the biting-edge f on the rear edge of the portion f and the biting-edge g on the front edge of the portion 9. The opposite end of the strap is then passed through the end slot F of theleft-hand corner-piece, which latter is moved along the strap until j ustenough of the strap intervenes between the cornerpieces to form the nose-piece K. The free end of the strap B is then passed through the slot E and forward on the inner face of the plate, and through the diagonal slot M, and through the horizontal slot G, from which it issues in a position at right angles to that at which it entered. Enough of the strap is then selected for the head-piece, and the free end thereof is then introduced from the front face ofthe right-hand corner-piece, through the slot G, and carried under the rib b, and up through the slot H, where it is retained by the biting-edges of the ribs 1) and 6. After the end just described has been secured in position it is concealed under that portion of the strap which passes over the front face corner-piece between the slots E and F.
Theleft-hand corner-piece, A, is constructed in a similar manner to the piece A, the only difference being that instead of using the two slots G and H only one is used, and the bitingedges described for the piece A are dispensed with. The two corner-pieces are connected together by the chin-piece D, which latter is provided with a buckle, R, for adjusting the halter on the horses head, while the head-strap is also provided with the throat-latch O,which latter can also be adjusted bya suitable buckle.
In forming the halter, instead of commencin g by forming the nose-piece first, I can begin the construction thereof by starting in a reverse direction thereto and forming the headpiece, it making no difference, as the parts can be put together equally as well one way as another.
A halter constructed as above described is simple in construction, of small first cost, and possesses advantages over other halters in that it is adjustable in all directions, it requiring but a simple manipulation of the parts to lengthen or shorten the head and nose pieces as required.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a halter, corner-pieces provided with vertical end slots, horizontal slots, and an inclined slot, provided with a biting-edge to re tain the halter-strap, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a halter, a corner-piece provided with a vertical slot at each end, an outer and an inner horizontal slot, the latter being provided with a biting-edge, and a diagonal slot arranged between the said vertical slots, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
In testimony whereofI have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD BARNARD.
