AppIication'AprilZB, 1946, Serial No. 665,738
8 Claims (01. 15--191) This invention relates to brushes, and more particularly to means for fastening the component parts thereof together.
An object of the invention i to provide a brush of the paint brush Variety having novel means for fastening the handle and ferrule thereof together. I 1
Another object of the invention is to provide a paint brush having fastening means on the ferrule adapted to. be secured in complementary receiving means on the brush handle.
A further object of the invention is to provide Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent form the following description taken in conjunction with the drawing forming.
part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a completely assembled open center type brush embodying the novel brush and ferrule fastening means of the invention;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the ferrule alone; I l
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the brush handle alone; and
Figure-4 is a Vertical sectional view of a completely assembled closed center type brush embodying the ferrule and handle fastening means of the invention.
Referring to the drawings for more specific details of the invention, Figure 1 illustrates a completely assembled .paint brush having a.
handle II), a ferrule I2, bristles I4, a cement composition I6 impregnating the butt ends of the bristles I4 and adapted to secure the bristles to the ferrule I2 and to a wedged plug I8 driven between the rows of bristles I4 to provide therebetween a space 20.
This invention is no concerned with the manher of securing the bristles to the ferrule IE or the spacing of said bristles by the plug I8, the manner of so doing being conventional and well known in the art, but, rather, to the manner in which the brush handle I is secured to the ferrule I2.
The handle I 0, as shown in Figure 3, comprises a gripping portion 22 which may be flat or beavertailed in shape and a head portion 24 having oppositely disposed grooves 26 extending the length of the sides thereof.
The ferrule, more particularly shown in Figure straight sides 30, rounded, ends 32, and a shoulder encompassing an elongated slot 36 centrally arranged with respect to the ferrule. A pair of spaced vertical plates 38, parallel to each other and arranged at the sides of the slot 36, have at their extreme ends inwardly turned flange portions 40.
The head portion 24 of the handle I0 is connected to the ferrule I2 by an endwise insertion, or longitudinal sliding of said portion between the unconnected ends of the vertical plates 38 so that the flanges 4B of said plates are received within the grooves 26 of the handle. The handle and ferrule are thus secured together to prevent any wobbling action between said members, and the prevention of any relative longitudinal movement between the handle and ferrule is prevented by thepassing of tacks or nails through plate members 38 into the head of the handle.
The insertion of the impregnated butt ends of the bristles I4 into the ferrule I2 and the wedging of plug I8 between the rows of bristles I4 may either precede or follow the fastening of the handle to the ferrule, and after said insertion the sides 30 of the ferrule I2 are preferably pressed inwardly, as shown in Figure l, to more firmly retain the bristles within the ferrule.
The ferrule I2 is preferably made of a light metal, such as aluminum, by a die casting process to impart suflicient strength to the plates 38 I of the ferrule so as to prevent any bending of said plates with respect to the cut portion 28 of the ferrule during normal use of the brush.
A modificationof the disposition of the bristles I4 of the brush to achieve what is known. as a solid center brush is indicated in Figure 4 wherein two plugs I8 are used in combination with the side walls 30 of the ferrule I2 to separate the butt ends of three rows of bristles. In this modification of the completely assembled paint brush, the sides 30 of the cut portion 28 of the ferrule are inclined inwardly to a slightly greater extent than in the hollow center brush of Figure 1 to impart the proper lines and stiffness to the bristles.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is understood that modifications in this embodiment may be made within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a brush ferrule comprising an elongated cup having sides and a base, a pair
