This invention relates to improvements in auxiliary units for artificial lungs or respirators.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved gasoline motor operated auxiliary driving unit for artificial lungs or respirators.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved gasoline motor or engine operated auxiliary driving unit for an artificial lung or respirator of the Emerson type, which will be attached to the respirator frame and connected by means of a belt with a pulley on the usual respirator mechanism to operate the same in locations where electricity is not available, or when a patient in the lung or respirator is being moved from one place or hospital to another place or hospital to continuously operate the lung or respirator during the time the move is made.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved auxiliary gasoline engine driving unit for artificial lungs or respirators which may be detachably secured to and connected with the usual electrically operated respirator unit for operating the same in emergencies, or in locations where there is no electricity available for operating the device in the usual manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved auxiliary gasoline powered driving unit for artificial lungs or respirators which will be highly efiicient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of an artificial lung or respirator showing the improved auxiliary gasoline engine operated driving unit attached thereto;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the supporting stand for the auxiliary driving unit;
Figure 3 is a side elevation, partly broken away and in section of the supporting stand attached to a respirator frame, with an engine shown in dotted lines supported thereon, and
Figure 4 is a detailed view of the upper and outer end of the supporting bracket or stand.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an artificial iron lung" or respirator generally denoted by the reference numeral I having a supporting frame 2 mounted upon the casters shown) when available.
The instant invention is designed as an. aux-.- iliary gasoline powered engine driving unit'and supportin stand therefor which will be attached to the respirator frame and connected by means of a belt to the pump unit 5 for operating the same in locations and at times where electricity is not available.
The supporting stand comprises a pair of inverted L-shaped arms I and 8 formed with the depending attaching fingers 9 and I0 adapted tolbe inserted in the spaced vertical slots or apertures II in the bracket l2 suitably attached to the respirator frame 2, as by welding. Locking set screws or bolts l3 are extended through the bracket H to engage and lock the fingers 9 and In when in said bracket l2.
The lower ends of the L-shaped arms I and 8 are inturned to provide the supporting feet It and I5 which will engage the floor upon which the respirator is supported, as for example, in an ambulance while transporting a patient in the respirator from one hospital to another.
A reinforcing connecting .strip I6 is welded to the arms I and 8 to strengthen the stand, while an upwardly extending L-shaped angle member I! is welded to the undersurface or edges of the arms I and 8 to extend beyond the same and upwardly therefrom. The upper end of said member [1 is apertured and threaded to receive the threaded inner end iii of the crank [9. A locking nut 26 is placed about the threaded end I8 of the crank 19 to secure the same in the desired adjustment and position on said member l1.
Spaced longitudinally extending slots 2| are formed through the horizontal portions of the arms I and 8 which are of channel construction, and a small gasoline engine 22 is secured to said arms I and B by the bolts 23 extending through the engine bed and through said slots 2|, the same being secured in fixed position by means of the nuts 24. I
An L-shaped bracket 25 is apertured through its opposite ends, and is held on one of the looking bolts 23, while the inner end of the threaded portion l8 of said crank I9 is secured to and through the aperture in the upper end of said bracket 25 by means of the locking bolts 26 and 21.
A pulley 28 will be secured to the crank shaft 29 of the gasoline engine 22, and will be connected with the pulley 30 on the pump unit by means of the belt 3|.
A flexible exhaust pipe 32 will be forced over the engine exhaust outlet and will support a rigid tube on its outer end, said exhaust pipe being of a 'sufilcient length to extend from the gasoline engine toj'any window or aperture through which the rigid end 33 may be placed to exhaust the exhaust gases to the atmosphere.

A support comprising a stand for connection to a frame carrying a part to be driven, a bracket having a vertical slot and secured to the frame, said stand including a platform with an aperture and means including a finger arranged at degrees to the platform removably disposed in said slot for releasably securing said platform to said bracket, a fastening element threaded in said bracket and having a longitudinal axis normal to said finger and releasably engaging said finger to lock said finger in said slot, a motor disposed on said platform, means guided by said aperture for adjusting said motor, and said motor having means operatively connected therewith for drivingly connecting said motor and the part to be driven.
