Description
(No Model.)
Patented May 23, 1882.
.& Rm m Wu RM w u F IO Hm Z UNITED STATES HOBATIO J. BREWER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ZlNC FOR BATTERIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,361, dated May 23, 1882. Application filed April 4, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORATIO J. BREWER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Zincs for Batteries, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to a new and improved zinc, by means of which I obtain a much more certain contact between the conducting wire or strip and the zinc, and a less resistance at said point of contact, and also, as I believe, a greater electromotive force in the current generated.
It has heretofore been customary to connect the wires of circular zincs, such as those used in Leclanch batteries, by soldering the connecting-wire into the end. Sometimes, also, a metallic rod has been soldered into the zinc and a screw-nut placed upon said red. It has been found difficult to obtain a perfect connection between the foreign metal and the zinc, and owing to the acids of the battery such connection is sometimes destroyed. By my improvement a screw-thread is cast upon the end of the zinc and a nut is placed thereon, adapted to clamp a wire beneath it.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective view, showing the nutin section.
A represents a zinc. B represents a screwthread cast upon part of the zinc. O represents a nut, preferably of brass, screwing upon the screw-thread B. A wire is placed in the space D between the nut and the zinc. By this arrangement I get a perfect contact between the nut G and the zinc B, and this extended contact produces a very beneficial result upon the current.
My zinc is also much more economical to construct, and as the thread B is made upon part of thezinc itself it can never be disconnected therefrom.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A zinc element for galvanic batteries, which consists of azinc rod, A,provided with a screwthread, B, out upon it, and a nut, G, of different material screwing upon said screw-thread, and adapted to clamp the wire or strip beneath it, substantially as described.
