SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 258,188, dated May 16, 1882. Application filed September 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY JASPER WOL- GOT'I, of Albion, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Windmills, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of what are known as solid-Wheel mills7 in contradistinction to those denominated sectional-Wheel mills,7 by means of which the movement of the tail-vane is controlled automatically.
l rIhe invention consists in the peculiar construction of parts and their combination, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawing my invention is shown in sectional perspective, and the drawing is designed to form a part of this specification.
A represents a solid Wheel, secured to the shaft B, which is suitably journaled to an overhanging arm, C, provided with bearings o c, and projecting from the turn-table D.
E is a tail-vane, the arm E of which is hinged to one side of the turn-table in such manner that when the wheel is running under ordinary circumstances the vane will stand at right angles to the face ofthe Wind-wheel and at one side of its axis, such hinging allowing a radial movement to the vane.
F is an arm hinged at the opposite side of the turn-table to a rigid arm, d, having an angular outer edge at right angles to the tailvane, and at an angle of about forty-ive degrees to the vertical axis of the turn-table, and carries upon its free end a weight, G. A rigid rod, H, connects the tail-vane and Weight-carrying arm together, each end of said rod being pivotally secured, one end to the vane and the other to the arm. Y Y
I am aware of the patent, No. 242,232, granted May 31, 1881, to Smith and Woodard, and therefore I do not broadly claim a windmill provided with a Weight-arm hinged obliquely to the turn-table and connected to a pivoted vane-arm.
What I claim as my invention is In a solid-Wheel Windmill, the turn-table D,
,provided with an arm,1G, having two bearings,
c c,and a smaller arm, d, having its outer edge at an angle of about forty-five degrees to the axis of the Wheel, in combination With the wheel A, shaft B, supported in the bearings c c of the arm 0, the Weighted arm F, hinged to the angular edge of the arm d, the vanearm E, hinged to the turn-table opposite to the arm d, and the rod H, connecting the weight-arm F and the vane-arm E, substantially as de scribed.
