ATTD RN EYB Patented Dec. 25, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PRIMARY IGNITION SYSTEM Ernest Jacob Kangas, Duluth, Minn. Application June 28, 1948, Serial No. 35,702
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to ignition systems for internal combustion engines and more particularly to the distributor thereof.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a distributor arrangement for ignition systems wherein instead of having multiple cams and a single point there is provided a single cam and multiple points whereby to improve the life of the points of the distributor so that they will last many times the life of the single point and wherein the breaker points can be adjusted from the outer side of the distributor body thereby making the operation simple and without the need for a special tool.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a dstributor having a single cam and multiple points with the points adjustable from the outer side of the distributor which is of simple construction, easy to adjust, inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elvational view of the distributor embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the distributor with portions broken away to show the interior thereof, the distributor being broken away along line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively sectional views taken respectively on lines 55 and 6-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on line 'l'! of Fig. 6.
Referring now to the figures, 19 represents a driving shaft which is extended upwardly through a sleeve portion H and into a bottom casing l2. Fitted within the casing 12 is a. ball bearing unit l3 which supports for rotational movement, a casing part [4. The shaft It] has a member l5 coupled to its upper end onto which is removably fitted, a cam 16, having a single indenture ll into which pivoted point arms l8 extend to close points L9. The arms l3 are pivotally connected upon upstanding pins 2| on a pin plate 22 which is insulatingly connected by screws 23 and insulation 24 to the revolvable casing part [4. The arms are held on the pins 21 by cotter pins 25. A spring 26 is anchored by a screw 21 to the plate 22 and serves to maintain the pivot arm l8 upon the cam I6.
It should be apparent that by the single cam a plurality of points are operated in succession. The stationary contacts 3| are adjustable along the inner face of the casing part 14. The fastening screw 32 extends through a slot in the contact and may be loosened to permit the adjustment of the contact relative to the screw, Fig. 7. An adjusting screw 4! is provided in the casing part [4 and has an eccentric formation 42 thereon engaging with an opening in the contact 3i so that as the screw 4! is turned the contact will be adjusted. These adjusting screws 4! are accessible from the exterior of the casing l4. Accordingly, the points may be adjusted outside of the distributor and without need for special tools.
Upon the part I4 there is fitted an insulating cap 44 having terminals 45 circumferentially arranged about a central terminal 46 thereon. The terminals 45 are consecutively connected with the terminal 46 through a terminal strip 41 on an insulating member 48 which is rotated by the member l6. The member 48 is tightly fitted onto a sprojection 49 on the member I 6. Spring clips 51 are pivotally secured as at 52 upon the part l4 and engage with the exterior of the insulating cap 44 and into a depression therein whereby to secure the cap 44 tightly upon the part [4.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim:
A distributor comprising a casing assembly having a lower casing part, an upper casing part and a ball bearing connection between the upper and lower parts to permit the adjustment of one part relative to the other, a cam disposed within the assembly and connected with a shaft extending into the assembly for the purpose of driving said cam, a plate surrounding the cam and in-- sulatingly connected to the upper casing part, a plurality of circumferentially spaced point levers pivotally connected upon the plate and adapted tobear against the cam, said cam being formed to operate the levers in succession, contact terminals having a slot and an opening therein which are spaced from each other mounted on the upper casing part adjacent each of the point levers, a contact on each of the point levers and the contact on each point lever engageable with a corresponding contact on the upper casing part upon each lever being pivoted, a terminal extending from the plate and the casing assembly,v a terminal cap mounted on the assembly, a bridging member engageable with terminals on the terminal cap and mounted on the cam for rotation within the cap, a screw mounted for rotation in the upper casing-part, an
eccentric head on the screw within the upper 15 1,452,419
casing part and said eccentric head being receivable in the opening in the contact terminal in the upper casing part and the screw being ac- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
