SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'257,944, dated May 16, 1882.

Application filed anuary 14, 1882. (No model.) i v To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that I, JAooB HOFFMAN, of Chippewa Falls, in the county of Chippewa and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a top view, of my improved fence.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention relates to portable fences; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described,and particular] ypointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A A represent the panels of my improved portable fence. Each panel is composed of horizontal bars or rails B 13, connected at the ends and at the middle by vertical postsOG. Only two horizontal bars or rails 13 B are used; but in addition thereto I employ one or more lengths of barbed wire, D, which are quite as useful and efficient in turning stock, and which are, besides, lighter and less expensive than lumber, and not so easily damaged and overturned in wet and windy weather. The barbed wiresD maybe secured to the vertical postsG bymeans of staples E, or in any other suitable manner. The ends of the horizontal bars or rails B B, which project beyond the vertical end posts, 0, are out off diagonally, as at F,and provided with diagonal notches G, so that the adjoining rail ends of adjoining panels shall inter-- o lock and form lap-joints, the construction of which is shown and claimedin apatent granted to myself, No. 131,000, dated SeptemberS, 1872. To further connect the panels I avail myself of books H and eyes or staples I. These hooks are to be arranged on both sides of the pan-- els, so as to make the connection firm and strong.

The ends of the wires may be formed with eyes J and hooks K, adapted. to engage each 50 other, and thus serve not only to connect the wires, but also to brace and strengthen the fence.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the advantages of my'invention will he readily understood.

My improved fence is simple, inexpensive, light, and durable, and may be put up or taken down in a short time.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A portable fence constructed of panels A, consisting of vertical posts G, horizontal bars or rails B,havin glap-joints F G, wires D,f0rmed with eyes J and hooks K, engaging those of the adjoining panel, and hooks and staples H I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
