Description
JOINTER FENCE ADJUSTMENT Filed Aug. 10, 1948 22 3 if a 2%&/72 Z3 250/4 2 'W W Patented Dec. 18, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE William B. Boice, Toledo, Ohio, assignor to Boice- Crane Gompanm -Ioledo, Ohio, a corporation 7 Ap'plication August '10, 1948, Serial No. 43,394
" sci-aims. (01. 144-253) This invention relates to definite positioning as to location and inclination of guide or stop means, more particularly as to a plane surface. This invention has utility when incorporated with a deck or table top, especially as having a rotary cutting tool protruding upwardly therefrom. As a jointer fence, a guide face may be positioned in a desired relation laterally of the tool for an elected spacing, with control for definitely fixing an angularity for the fence face as to the top. There is accordingly provided hereunder quick range for accurate setting of the fence, adapted especially for woodworking, artificial lumber, and compositionsof a general character responsive tospecial edge dressings or configurations.
Referring to the drawings: Fig. 1 is a partly broken away front elevation, shown in dotted lines, of apower-operated jointer machine tool unit base and deck, having, as shown in full lines, a fence therefor with adjustment controls;
. Fig. 2 is a view from the left of Fig. 1, of a responsive mounting for the jointer fence at the end thereof remote from the calibrated or definite setting selectable controls;
Fig. 3 is an elevation from the right of Fig. 1, I
showing the table-directed slide plate and largely broken away as to a cooperating tilt plate, and at a stop position for the guide at 135 from the plane of the tabletop;
. Fig. 4 shows the full tilt plate in front of the slide plate, and here tilted to 90 from the plane of the table top; and
Fig. 5 is on a still larger scale, in section along the axial region of the clamp controls, from the left of Fig. 4, with parts broken away and showing the stop for the tilt plate engaging the underside of the table top for the fence face to be set at 45 from the plane of the table top as extending from under the overhanging fence.
A pedestal or base I has thereona mounting 2 for locating a table fiat top or deck 3 having an opening 4 centrally therein. As a power tool, a motor 5 may have a rotary cutting tool; 6 in a desired protruding relation at the opening 4 in its effective working range. above-the top 3.
A jointer fence body is shown with a plane face 8 downwardly terminating in an edge portion 9 of slight clearance and parallel to the deck 3. The edge 9 in its extent toward the opening 4, adjacent the opening 4 has a lug ID as a rest to contact the deck 3 with a clearance I across the region of thetool 6 withan edge. J2 therefrom of somewhat more clearance as to the deck 3 than the edge 9. The fence body I from adjacent the end of the edge l2 as away from the clearance I has a projection l3 carry:
ing a trunnion M to enter a bearing l5 of-a1 downwardly inclined slotted link l'B. At anpedge I! of and fixed with the table top 3 is an 6X? ternally threaded pin l8 extending thru slot H) of the link l6. Upon the pin l8 toward the link I6 is a washer 29. A knurled handle or knob nut 2| may be set to act as a clamp for the link. I6 for the range of control positions to be set for the face 8 of the fence member or body 1.
The table top 3 opposite to and parallel with the edge IT, has a track 22. Thetrack 22.has open ends and is open outward. Insertablein the track 22 is a slide plate 23 having on its outer upwardly extending face a pair of lugs or. bosses 24. More centrally fixed with the plate 23 and protruding between the bosses 24 is :an
interior smooth bore sleeve 25having intermediaate its extent'an externally threadedportion26u is an axis region 3| as the active location for the cutter 6. From this region 3| as a center is an arc slot 32 in the tilt plate 28. I
The are slot 32 at its root or back portion ha a ledge region 33 of slight clearance as to the external diameter of the hollow stem or sleeve 25 and as a groove extends to open ends beyond.
the slot 32 for the full arc of extent of the tilt plate 28. In this open ended way portion 33 at the back of the tilt plate 28, may ride the. bosses or lugs 26. A bounding ledge or rim 34 surrounds the open face of the slot 32 and provides a seat for the washer 20. of the clamp lock. in the coaction of the knurled knob 2| with the; threaded portion 26 of the stem 25 in-pulling, the slide plate 23 into holding relation with the, tilt plate 28 at the elected tilt position for the fence face 8.
Positioning the slide plate Spaced upwardly from the bottom of the track 22 to align with the bore of the sleeve 25 is a slot 34 having a countersunk entrance portion 35. A rectangular head 36 has a projecting-rib 31 as a key to ride in the entrance portion 35-. A bolt or stem 38 fixed with the head'36 extending thru: the bore of the sleeve 25 and, as protruding therefrom in theknob. 2|, hasan externallyof the fence face 8 as to the cutting tool 62 Then, with such setting or location. determined, the rise plane for the fence face 8 may be additionally and separately elected and clampedthru the operation of the knob" 211 During these angularly placings for the face 8 over the range desired, the setting as determined-by the. wrench-p handle 42 in clamping the plate 23 may be left undisturbed.
Tilt. plate special stops.
From: the axis? 315a radial line 43" at" approximately 45 from. the. direction. of the edge 29 hasa bolt 44 protruding. from outeriarc face 45 of the'ztiltplate 28'. The bolt 441s aipivot' parallel to and spaced from the. line. 435' toward the edge .29.. The bolt 44 fixedlyclampsian arm or offset- 46 against a fixed pin. 4.? on the side of the arm'- Mi away from the. line 43. Thru the free endiof: thearm 46 and in-a direction perpendicularr-to the line43 is an: externally threaded stem 48 which-maybelocked at adjusted position by a. nut: 49% Atxthis adjusted projection for the stem 48,end'fa'ce 50 of the stem 48 is brought just to; th'e directionof the line 43; This means that asithei-face' 5'0 isswung'down to strike thetop of the tab1'e 3, the-face 29'extends away from the axis3li to have the fence face 8 make an angle off 135ope'nin'gfrom the top of the table 3. This islafixed stop determining the maximum back or openingswing or tilt for'the joint'er fenceface 8.
The tilt plate 2 8, at 941 from theface or edge 29; ata radialline 5i has'a second-bolt 44 parallel' thereto and mounting aswing arm 4'6 friction-- ally. held by a spring washer 52 when the free-endo'f'this arm 46" is" not overhanging but along the facev 45. At'this position, thestop at the radial line 43' maybe effective. Howevenwith the arm 4fi swung outward; that is, to overhang laterally from the face 45, in-proximity to the radial line 51 the endif'ace 5ft of its'stem 48 as adjustably setTbyFth'e locknut" 49atherefor, in striking the" top of the table 3, is with suchtop coinoidentwith th'eiline 5|; This positions the fence face 8 to rise vertically from the table 3.
