Description

De- 18, 1951 E. s. TUPPER SEAL FOR FLEXIBLE CNTAINERS Filed Dec. 1, 1948 Patented Dec. 18, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i 2,578,864 I Y' SEAL FOR FLEXIBLE CONTAINERS Earl S. Tupper, Upton, Mass. Application December 1, 1948, Serial No. 62,845 1 claim. (o1. 22a- 206) This invention relates toV perfume, powder and medicant dispensers. Y p Y It is an object of the present invention to provide a perfume, powder and medicant dispenser wherein the perfume or powder is contained in a chamber of flexible and resilient material which is squeezed to effect a `dispensing action and wherein upon being released will be returned instantly to its original shape and wherein the dispensing device serves as the packaging container in which the contents are delivered to the consumer and wherein the container is made usable as a dispensing device by the breaking of an integral tip of the material.
It is another object of the present nventio to provide for a dispensing device of the flexible chamber type a suitable base for retaining the open end of the chamber and for providing sufcient backing of the chamber wall within the base whereby to prevent leakage which might result when the chamber is squeezed or a breaking down of the base connection after constant use.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a resilient chamber dispenser for perfume, powder and the like which is of simple construction, easy to assemble, easy to prepare for use, tightly sealed, inexpensive to manufacture. convenient to use and eiicient in operation.
For other objects and for a, better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in whichv Figure l is a perspective View of the resilient dispensing device embodying the features of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view, in elevation, taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of a, dispenser particularly adapted for dispensing powder, the dispenser being held and squeezed for dispensing action.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken through the connection of the base with the resilient chamber and showing the reinforcing member for the inner wall of the chamber, the View being taken on line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken through the connection of the tube with the dispensing end of the flexible chamber of the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, the view being taken on line 5--5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of a modified form of the device shown in Figure 1 wherein a projection for nasal introduction is provided for use of the device as a nasal spray.
perfume or a medicant Il which is normally closed at its upper end as when the perfume is rbeing delivered from the factory to the consumer and which is especially formed with a tip I2 having a hole I3. To prepare the device for use, the A tip I2 is severed to open the hole I3.
Depending from the top and below the hole I3 is a hollow portion I4 adapted to receive a tube I5 which is curved at its lower end and which extends to the bottom of the device. The depending portion I4 is formed with side passages I6 through which air may pass through the opening I 3 when the squeezing action is eilected upon the chamber to draw the perfume through the tube I5 and to eject the same into the atmosphere.
The bottom end of the chamber I0 is formed with a flange I'I from which depends a skirt portion I8. This skirt portion is threaded as at I9 to receive and retain a base 2| of rigid material. The lower end of the portion I8 is not threaded and extends into a peripheral recess 22 formed in the base whereby to provide support for the lower end of the portion I8 and to prevent the same from moving inwardly. In order to be certain of the connection of the resilient chamber with the base and to provide adequate sealing action, there is provided adjacent the threads I9 but on the inner wall of the chamber a recess 23 receiving a depending flange 24 of a bottom reinforcing member 25. This member 25 with flange 24 will positively retain the depending portion I8 within the base and will maintain the portion I8 in tight sealing engagement with an external and upstanding threaded flange or portion 26 threaded onto the threads I9.
lt will be apparent that there is little opportunity for the portion I8 to free itself of the base. The lower end of the flange 24 of the reinforcing member 25 will press the lower end of the depending portion I8 into the recess 22. Ii; will be seen that a, positive sealing action is eiected. The upper end of the portion 26 will abut the ange or shoulder I'I.
As shown in Figure 6, an oriced nasal projection 21 is formed as the top of chamber I0 with a removable tip 28 similar to I2.
The chamber ID is formed of a plastic material which when released will return to its original shape instantly. The members 2l and 25 are preferably formed of a more rigid plastic.
In Figure 3, there is shown a silghtly different type of chamber wherein there is provided a plurality of openings 21 on the top thereof for the 3 purpose of dispensing a powder or granular material 28. The same operation is performed upon the chamber as when dispensing a liquid such as perfume as with the form of the invention above described. The same seal is effected upon the bottom of the chamber.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit, and scope of the present invention as definedbytheappended claim.
I claim:
A dispensing device comprising a resilient;v squeeze chamber having a dispensing opening at its upper end, said chamber having a depending skirt portion partly threaded and free of threadson its lower end, a base having a peripheral groove adapted to receive the lower end of the depending portion of the chamber, said base having an'up wardly extending internally threaded peripheral portion against which thedepending portion; of the chamber may.I be depressed, a reinforcing member tted within the chamber andserving to urgethedepending portion. into. the recessof the. base. and.y against the upwardly. extending por-K tion thereof, saidv reinforcing membery having a peripheral depending portion, said resilient.
squeeze chamber having an internal recess, said peripheral depending portion of the reinforcing member lying within the recess, the lower end of the peripheral depending portion of the reinforcing member extending over the groove of the base to retain the part of the depending portion of the resilient squeeze chamber therewithin.
