Claims.
This invention appertains to a rigid type awning structure and more particularly relates to a novel connecting or locking means for the valance of the awning or the relatively short vertically depending fringe portion on the front of the awning structure.
The primary object of this invention is to form the awning surface panels with self contained locking means so that the panels can be readily and conveniently connected together in a properly spaced and arranged assembly without the use of headed fasteners or the like.
These and ancillary objects and structural features of merit are attained by this invention, the preferred embodiment of which is set forth in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein;
Figure l is a fragmentary elevational view;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1.
In the accompanying drawing, the awning structure It includes a plurality of bottom metal panels I2 having parallel upstanding side Walls [4 formed on their opposing side edges and terminating at their upper edges in inwardly directed flanges l6. Inverted U-shaped upper panels I8 are provided and are adapted to be positioned on the flange on the adjacent side walls of adjoining lower panels i2, which are laterally spaced so that the upper and lower panels are in spaced staggered relationship. The walls of the upper panels I8 are parallel and terminate in lateral inwardly directed flanges 22. As seen in Figure 1, the front ends of both the upper and lower panels are bent downwardly at an obtuse angle to form a depending vertical front fringe or valance 24, with the bent ends of the panels being held together in a manner as taught by this invention.
3. A rigid type awning comprising a first set of channel shaped awning surface panels, each of said panels including a web portion having upstanding walls formed on the side edges 'thereof a second set of channel shaped panels, each of said panels of the second set including a web portion having upstanding walls formed on the side edges thereof with lateral inwardly directed flanges formed on the side walls; the panels of the second set being inverted and overlapping the panels of the first set with the Web portions of each panel of the second set resting on the adjoining walls of adjacent panels of the first set; the web portions of the panels of the first set being formed with longitudinally disposed elongated inwardly facing upstruck ears defining elongated slots, with portions of the flanges of the walls of the panels of the second set being inserted under the ears.
4. A rigid type metal awning comprising a set of U-shaped lower panels, a set of inverted U-shaped upper panels overlying the lower panels and staggered with respect thereto, the panels of one of said sets having upstanding walls on the side edges thereof, lateral flanges on said side walls, the web portions of the other set of panels having upstruck ears defining elongated slots, said lateral flanges being received and retained beneath said ears.
"5. The combination of claim 4 wherein'said lateral flanges are directed inwardly of said upstanding walls whereby said ears are housed between the webs and the upstanding Walls of a panel of each set.
