DISPLAY BOARD Filed Sept. 11, 1948 Patented Dec. 11, 1951 DISPLAY BOARD Sidney ,R. Wirth, River Forest,-Ill., assignor to Advertising Metal Display 00., Chicago, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application September 11, 1948, Serial No. 48,795
Claims. 1
This invention relates to improvements in display boards and it consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The boards with which the present invention 5 is more especially concerned includes a supporting panel and members that project forwardly from the bottom of the board for the hanging support of the articles displayed on the board. A display board of this general type is illustrated and described in Patent 1,998,243 of April 16, 1935 to Herbert H. Krueger.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved structure for attaching the article supporting hangers from the panel of the board and this in a manner whereby the hangers are better able to withstand the load of the articles supported and willnot so easily loosen up from the panel.
A further object of the invention is to so form the panel with a part which not only stii'fens the same better to resist warping, but which part also is employed for engagement by portions of the hangers to resist the tendency. of the hangers to tip under the weight of the articles supported thereby.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for association with a-display board of this general type whereby it is possible to hang heavier items without displacing the wire hanger.
Again, it is an object of the invention to provide means associable with a display board of this general type and where pliers of different types can be held firmly in place and yet can be readily removed when required.
The above mentioned objects of the invention, together with others, as well as the several advantages thereof, will more fully appear as the specification proceeds.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a display board embodying the invention, as viewed from the front.
Fig. 2 is-a fragmentary rear perspective of the display board of Fig. 1, on a scale slightly enlarged over that of Fig. 1, the articles shown in Fig. 1 being omitted, and
Fig. 3 is a detail view on the line 3--3 of Fig. l, but on a larger scale. I
The improved display board includes a sheet metal panel I0 which is provided at its top and ends with rearwardly extending flanges H and I2 respectively. Rearwardly from the bottom of panel l0 there extends a ledge I 3, the rear margin of which isturned back upon, but spaced above, the ledge to form a forwardly extending flange 14, which not only stiffens the ledge but also defines a forwardly opening groove or channel l5. As shown, the panel is provided with a pair of longitudinally spaced openings IS, the bottoms 2 r of which are substantially flush with the top of the ledge, as best appears in Fig. 2.
Associated with the panel is a hanger ll for cooperating with the openings [6. Each hanger is made of a length of wire bent into substantially a U-shape so as to include a pair of laterally spaced side legs I8l8 each of which is turned upwardly at its front free end as a hook [9, the other end of said legs being operatively connected together by a cross member 20. This member spaces the legs apart a distance corresponding to the distance between the openings I6 of each pair. The wire from which the hangers are made is of such a diameter as to readily pass through the openings, as well as to permit entry of the cross bar 20 into the groove l5 from the open front thereof.
On the back of the panel and disposed in a. vertical plane between the axes of the opening [6 of each' pair is pivotally mounted a hanger confining member 2|, which includes a web 22 and front and rear flanges 2324, with the rear flange 24 being pivotally mounted on the panel by a rivet 25. The web 22 is of such width that when the member 2i stands in the upright position shown in Fig. 2, the front flange 23 engages the central bowed portion 26 of the member 20. I
To apply the hanger to the panel the hanger confining member 2| is swung into substantially horizontal position wherein its bottom end is spaced above the ledge l3. A hanger ll is then taken in hand and from the rear of the panel the hooks l9-I9 are passed through the associated pair of openings I6, while the hanger is disposed at an angle extending upwardly and rearwardly from the junction of the panel and its ledge I3. The hanger is then moved forwardly and downwardly until the cross bar 29 thereof engages the ledge l3 forwardly of the flange [4. Thereafter the hanger is moved rearwardly so that the cross bar 20 thereof enters the groove I5 under the flange M at the rear of the ledge and at which time the legs |8l8 are disposed in a plane parallel with the ledge and with the rear end of said legs engaging on said ledge. Thereafter the associated hanger confining member 2| is swung downwardly to extend in an upright position (as at the left hand side of Fig. 2) at which time the flange 23 engages the bowed portion 26 of member 20 and confines the hanger portion 20 in'the groove [5. As clearly appears in Fig. 1 (right hand side) certain articles may be hung on the legs 18-48 of the hanger. There is shown, as by way of example, a well-known type of pliers.
The hanger I1 is not well adapted for the support of certain types of pliers which are not well balanced. For such items, a special type of outwardly and upwardly extending marginal por tions 3232. The marginal portions 32 are each provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced recesses 33, 33. The typical plier-sis of two parts 35-35, operatively conneetedby a pivot 36. The operative end portions 38 of the plier parts are usually thicker than; the. handle portion 31, providing a ledge where the reduction in thickness takes place To support such plieii, it is only necessary to place or have one member orpart of the pliers in a recess 33 with the ledge portion of the plier part resting upon the upper face of marginal portion 32.. This arrangement is perhaps best shown in the left hand side of Fig. 1. In about the mid portion of Fig. 1 is shown a slightly 'difierent type of pliers but one nevertheless including the ledge portion for overhanging the upper face of portion 32.
For supporting the holder from the panel a member 40, having a hookend 41, is secured to the rear face of the panel, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. An opening l3a is provided in the ledge l3 directly below the hook end ll of member 40. A U-shaped strap metal member having spaced legs 42-42 and a connecting upper portion 43 is provided, the lower ends of the legs being secured to the inner faces of the U-shaped holder. To sin-x the holder it is taken in hand and the strap metal member inserted from below through the opening l3a in ledge l3, the holder being tilted so that the portion 43 may pass the rear part of hook 44-, after which it is swung inwardly and then lowered to the position best shown in Fig. 2. In this way the holder is very strongly mounted and is well adapted to support a heavy load on the outer part of the holder.
'In some forms of pliers, the two parts are formed of stock of uniform thickness, the outer or working end being merely efiset from the plane of the handle and remaining portions of the parts. In such construetion the ledge is not sufficiently defined to provide adequate support by mere placement in one of the recesses 33. Hence there is provided at the bottom of the holder a sheet metal member 50 having a downwardly and outwardly extending portion which in turn is provided with a plurality of recesses 52. The recesses are equal in number to those in the portion 32 at the upper part of the holder, but as is shown in Fig. 3, they are slightly ofiset. This permits the Jaw-part 53 of onepart 54 of the pliers to be accommodated in one of the upper recesses and the handle portion 55 of the other part 56 to be accommodated in the oflset recesstherebelow. In this way the tool is held firmly in position, is prevented from swinging in any directionexcept away from the holder, and then only when bodily moved as by manually grasping the handle part of the pliers. In this way the pliers may be readily removed from the holder when desired.
While in describing the invention '1 have re ferred in detail to the form, construction and arrangement of the parts involved, the same is to be considered only in the illustrative sense and therefore I do not wish to be limited there tm except as may be specifically set forth in the "appe'nded claims. 1 1
