Description

(No Model.)
Pateiited May 9, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEFFERSON WILSON, OF BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHURN- POWER.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,797, dated May 9, 18 82.
Application filed December 3L, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Betit known that I, JEFFERSON WILsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beaver'F-alls, Beaver county, Pennsylvania,
have invented certain Improvements in Churn- Powers, of which the followingv is a specification.
My invention is an animal-power, fully described hereinafter, which is of. simple con-- plan of one of the links. Fig. 6is an enlarged sectional view of the dash-rod and clamp.
The frame W of the apparatus consists of suitable posts and cross-bars.
The web-supporting frame A carries the wheels 0 G, and is pivoted or hung on a crossbaiyf, between bars BB ot' the frame \V. The endless web I passes around the wheels 0 (3.
To a post, E, of the frame is pivoted a lever, H, to one end of which is attached a rod,
0, connected at the opposite end to a balance-- wheel, J, secured to the shafts of the wheels 0 C, and to the other end ofsaid lever H is pivoted a clamp, P, for making detachable and adjustable connection with the dash-rod of the churn, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the side pieces of the web-frame A, near the outer ends, are longitudinal slots c, in which slides a cross-bar, g, and the projecting ends of the latter bear in notches a in the posts F. E of the frame 7, or in plates attached thereto, for the purpose of supporting the web-frame at different inclined positions to which it may be adjusted, Fig. 1. p
The wheels (3 U have peripheral lugs 0 c,
which fit between the slats Y composing the web and insure the revolution of the wheels with the web. Flanges s on the sides of the wheels prevent the web from being displaced. Each web-link consists of one piece of metal comprising a stem, a, with ahead, b, atone end and enlarged at the other to form a loop,
0, and has sockets e ,6, adapted to receive the head of the next loop, which will be retained therein, as shown in Fig. 4, thus pivoting the,
links, with their slats Y, together. By applying the slats Y to the links and securing them by screws passed through perforated lugss of the links the cross-heads are retained in their sockets without interfering with their swing ing motion, thus permitting the web'to bend end of the frame, so that it can be turned down that the head-board niay be secured in either position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The bar or pivotfot' the web'frame may be movably connected to the supporting-frame to admit of the longitudinal adjustment of said Web-frame. Thus the bars may rest in bearings o, movable on the bars E E.
Connection having been made between the dash-rod of the churn and the lever H by means of the clamp P, and between the flywheel J and lever H by means of the rod 0, and the frame A being adjusted at the proper angle, the animal is placed upon the web, and by putting the same in motion causes the drums O (J to revolve, thus actuating the lever H and the churn-shaft.
When the machine is not in operation the bar 9 of the frame A may be removed from its hearings in the posts E, and the frame, its web, and drums, with the lever H, may be turned to the positions 'shown in Fig. 2 and there maintained by merely sliding the bar 9 along the slot e untilit has reached a position where it can restin notches g of the bars M of the supporting-frame.
As the frame A is pivoted between its ends,
one end will be carried inward as the other is .turned up, so as to bring the entire frame and its drums nearly within the limits of the supporting-frame, thereby reducing the apparatus to a compact form for stowage.
' If desired, the apparatus may be mounted upon rollers or other devices to facilitate its movement from place to place.
It will be apparent that other means than those describedmay be used for securing the frame at any desired angle.
I may drive a rotary churn by a belt passing round the fly-wheel and round a pulley on the churn-shaft, or otherwise.
I claim-- 1. The combination, in an animal=power, of the supporting-frame W, the web-frame A, pivoted Within said frame W, between its ends, so that it may be turned within the frame to a vertical position, and provided with a device, substantially as described, for securing it in any position to which it may be adjusted, subsfantially as set forth.
2.- The combination, in an animal-power, of the supporting-frame W, its notches y and u, and the pivoted web-frame A, provided with the sliding bar'g, substantially as set forth.
3. The web-link provided with a cross-head at one end and with socketsat the opposite end, adapted to the cross-head of the adjacent link, all cast in one piece, substantially as set forth. 4. The combination of the links, their crossheads and sockets, each cast in one piece, as set forth, and slats Y, retaining the cross-heads in the sockets, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the operating-lever H, of the pivoted clamp provided with a cam-lever, Q, grooved and spurred, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination, with the supportingframe of the apparatus, of a hinged head- JEFFERSON WILSON.
