Description
Dec. 4, 1951 J. R. HO ULE 2,577,685
SIDE BRACKET FOR BED SPRINGS Filed Oct. 4, 1950 Inventor i atented Dec. 4, i951 v SIDE BRACKET FOR BED SPRI NGS M Joseph Rodolphe Houle, Victoriaville, Quebec,
Canad Application OctoberA, 1950; Serial No. 188,406 v Thelpresent invention: relates to bed springs and more particularly to side brackets for supporting the tubular side bars in a bed spring of the type comprising a metal rectangular frame. The frame of conventional bed springs of". the above mentioned type is usually made of cast iron and therefore is very heavy to handle. According to the present invention this framewill be made 'of aluminium or other light metal to facilitate handling.
Heretofore, manufacturers have refrained from making bed spring frames in aluminium because-the side bars tend to bend and break under the considerable stresses exerted by the mattress supporting members. This breakage is due mainly to the fact that conventional short brackets have been used to connect the side bars to the transverse end frame members of the bed spring.
Accordingly, the main object or" the present invention is the provision of side brackets adapted to connect the side bars to the end frame members of a bed spring which is of such a construction as to permit the manufacturing of said side bars of aluminium.
Another important object, according to the present invention, is the provision of side brackets of the character above mentioned having integral 7 sleeves to permit easy and fast mounting of a bed spring by slidably inserting thereinto both ends of the side bars or tubes.
Another important object, according to the present invention, is the provision of side brackets of the character described which are of light weight construction and yet very strong and durable.
The foregoing and other important objects according to the present invention will become more'apparent during the following disclosure and by referring to the drawings in which:
3 Claims. (01. 51200) angle end frame members I, four side brackets 2 secured right angularly at both ends 3 of the members I, and a side bar or tube 4' extending between each pair of brackets 2. The brackets 2 are rigidly-secured to the vertical flange of the members I by means of rivets 5 in such'a manner as to bear against the underside of the horizontal flange of said members I.
The brackets 2,' which may be as'long as 18 inches, have an I-beam cross-sectional contour as shown in Figures 4 and 5 for solidity in construction, yet are light weight. They are tapered toward their inner end 6 which is integrally provided with a sleeve I for slidable insertion of the side tubes 4.
The lower outer end portion 8 of the sleeve 1 is cut at a bevel for easier insertion of the side tubes 4 without impairing the strength of the junction between the tubes and the brackets 2 for resisting thrusts in a downward direction, which are the usual thrusts encountered during use of a bed spring.
The top flange 9 of the bracket 2 is of substantially uniform width throughout and lies in a plane substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the side tube 4. The bottom flange I0 is also of substantially uniform width but is converging toward the sleeve I.
The end of the top flange 9 opposite the sleeve I is upwardly inclined at II to link the flared flange portion l2 which lies above the flange 9 but in a plane substantially parallel therewith.
The end of the bottom flange I0 opposite the sleeve 1 forms a rounded portion I3 merging with vertically upstanding T-shaped fastening face I4 the cross leg portion of which contacts the flared flange portion I2. The cross leg portion of the fastening face I4 is provided with two spaced holes I5 for insertion of the rivets 5.
When the brackets 2, according to the invention, are secured to the members I as shown more particularly in Figure 2, it will be seen that the top flange 9 lies in a plane below the plane containing the horizontal flange of the transverse end members I whereby the side tubes 4 will lie in a plane substantially level with the metallic strips I6 when the springs I'l connecting the latter to members I are stretched under the weight of the sleeper.
The web portion I8 linking the top and bottom flanges 9 and II] of the bracket 2, according to the invention, is provided with a series of circular holes I9 of decreasing diameter toward the From the foregoing description it will be seen that the bed spring frame, according to the invention, will be very simple in construction and yet very strong and rigid due to the use of the specially designed side brackets 2 which will confer suliicient rigidity to the side members of the bed spring so as to enable the use of aluminium or of an aluminium alloy for the manufacture of the same,
Whileta preferred-embodiment according-tome present invention has been illustrated and described it is understood that various modifica i tions may be resorted to without depantipgirgorn;
