, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. ROGERS AND JOHN ROGERS, OF BIRMINGHAM, COUNTY OF WAR- WICK, ENGLAND, ASSIGNORS TO JOHN B. OLABROUGH, OF SAME PLACE.
BREECH-LOADING FIRE-ARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,764, dated May 9, 1852. Application filed January 24, 1882. (No model.) Patented in England January 29, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that we, JOHN THOMAS ROeERs and JOHN ROGERS, of Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breech Loading Fire- Arms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our improvement relates to the cooking mechanism of breech-loadin g tire-arms operating upon the drop-down principle and having concealed hammers. It is an improvement in that class of guns in which the dropping down of the barrels is made to effect the cockin g of thehammers bydetlecting a cooking-lever, and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of said cooking-lever in relation to the barrels and the main fulcrum-pin upon which the barre-ls turn, as will be hereinafter fully described. i
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding-parts in al1 the gures.
Figure l is a side view of the breech portion of the gun as closed. Fig. 2 is a side view with the gun open for charging', and with the lock-plate broken away to show the cookinglever. Fig. 3 is a planview of the gun-body with the barrel detached, and Fig. 4 is a side view of the cooking-lever detached.
. a a are the barrels. bis the body. d are the hammers, and c c are the cocking-levers, piv oted in each lock-hole on independent fulcrumpinsl, one end of eachlever resting under each hammer, and the other ends under the barrels, so that when the barrel is opened for loading the outer ends of the levers are forced down.
f is the basepin on which the barrels are hung, ofthe usual form and in the usual position, and which is in no wise interfered with by the action of levers c, that by their form and independent center-pins work without passing the center of thebase-piu f.
N ow, we are aware of the fact that a cocking-lever has been fulcrumed on an independ4 ent center between the main fulcrumpin f and the hammer, as shown in Patent N o. 247,378, and we do not claim this, broadly. It will be seen, however, that we make the outer end of the cooking-lever of a higher level than the iuner or rearend, and extend this Outer end over and past the fulcrum-pin f, so that it has a range of movement from the barrel to the fulcrum-pin. By this arrangement this end of the cooking-lever in its movement does not pass by or intercept the axis of the fulcrumpin, as in the patent referred to, and the re sult is that we are enabled to preserve the full strength and integrity of the fulcrum-pin f from side to side of the breech, permitting its easy removability when worn, and making a stronger connection for this end of the breech.
The fore end is of the ordinary construction, but as it takes no part in the operation of cock ing need not be further alluded to.
The operation is thus: When the barrels are depressed to open the breech in the act of loading, the pressure onlevers c at their outer ends raises the opposite ends that are beneath the hammers, and the hammers are thus thrown back. When the breech is again closed the cooking-levers are released, so that they do not hinder the forward movement Of the hammers, and, if desired, a small spring may be provided to return the levers to their tirst position when allowed by the closiu g ot' the barrels.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the breech, the tilting hammer, and barrel, of a main fulcrum-pin, f, for connecting the barrel to the breech, extend; ing from side to side of the breech, and th'e cooking-lever c, fulcrumed upon an indepeudi ent center between the barrel-fulcrum and the hammer, and having its forward end raised to a higher level than its rear end, and extended over and past the main fulcrumpiu, and ar ranged to play between the same and the lower face ofthe barrel, substantially as shown and described.

It is hereby eertied that in Letters Pzt'tentwNo. 257 ,7 64, granted May 9, 1882, upon the application of John T. Rogers and John Rogers of Birmingham, England, for an improvement in BreeehLoading Fire-Arms, the name of the assignee and grantee,
Wherever it appears in said Letters Patent and the printed speciiieation att-ached to and forming,` a part thereof, was erroneously Written and printed John B. Clnbrough,
instead of John P. Clabrongh, that the correct name is John P. Clabrough, that the proper eorreetions have been made in said Letters Patent to make them conform to the files and records pertaining to the oase in the Patent Office.
Signed, eountersigned and sealed this 11th dey of July, A. D. 1882.
