FERDINAND HOSCH, OF ROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
MACHINE Foa CLEANING- Fuafaoe'es.'
lfcgtFIfcrurfolv forming' part of Letters Patent No. 257,707, dated May 9, 1882,.
Application tiled February 23, 1882. (No model.)
Beit known that I, FERDINAND Hosen, of
ABrooklyn, 'in the county of Kings and State of 'NewYorl, have invented a new and Improved =Macl1ine"for Cleaning Fur Robes, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for thoroughly cleaning furrobes very rapidly and ata small expense.
The invention consists in a rotating drum orA cylinder onwhich the robes are held by means of suitable devices, on which drum a series of brushes revolve, one of which is contained in a box filled with sand and sawdust, which are rubbed into the fur by the'brush in the sandbox and are brushed out ,again` by the other fbrushes,'whereby the fur robe will be thoroughly cleaned.
Referenceis tobe had to the accompanying drawings, forming aI part of this specification,
Ain which similar letters ot `reference indicate vcorresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is an :end elevation of my improved fur-robe-cleaning,machine, parts being shown in section. Fig 2 is a crosssectional elevation of parts ot' the drumor, cylinder, showing the manner of holding 'the robe. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional-elevation of the same. Fig. `t is a front elevation ot' my improvedfurcleaning machine, parts being removed. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal plan view ot' the rail or bar usedto hold the robe on the drum or cylinder. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal side elevation of the same. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal front and side elevation of the straps for holding short robes on the drum.
A hollow drum or cylinder, A, made of wood or metal, is provided with a central shaft, B, which is journaled in two frames or standards, C, of wood or metal. Alargey belt-pulley, A', for` a driving-belt, D, is made integral-with the drum A, as shown in Fig. 4.
vertical slots bin the frames O to permitanautomatic vertical adjustment ofthe brush according to the thickness of the robe.
A cylindrical combing-brush, G, with the bristles arranged in spiral rows, is mounted in the frames G below the drum or cylinder A, and the ends of the shaft c of this brush G pass through ve-rtical slots d in the Vframes C.
A belt-pulley, G', is mounted on one end of the shaft c of the brush G, and a belt-pulley, F', is mounted on the end ofthe shaft a ofthe brush F.
A belt, l, passes overV the pulley G, and a pulleys F and Gr', as shown in Figs. l and 4. l
A cylindrical combing-brush, K, provided with a bel t-pulley, rests on longitndinally-slotted horizontal arms g of the frames (l and rests against the drum or cylinder A. A belt, L, is used to rotate this brush K.
Diametricallyopposite each other the drum A is provided with a series of longitudinal grooves, M, in its surface, which grooves are separated by ridges or tongues 0.
The grooves M are adapted to receive a rohe- `holding bar or rail, P, which is provided ou its under side with a series of studs or pins, h. One end` of this rail or bar I) is'provided with a rabbet, lo, to adapt this end ofthe bar or rail to be passed under a raised band, l, at the end of the cylinder or d rum. The opposite. end of the rail P is provided with alongitudinal slot,
m, through which one of a series of swiveled angular keys, N, are passed at the edge ofthe drum opposite the edge provided ,with the raised band l.
A groove, Q, extends transversely across the ridges or tongues 0, and a short distance below the bottoms of the grooves M, as shown in Fig. 2. Two plates, n, project from the sides of this groove Q., directly below the bottoms of the grooves M, and these plates form aslot atgor near the middle of the depth ot' the groove Q. I, i
A clamp, S, rests on the plates a, and can be locked on the same by means of a screw, o, passing through the base of theclam p, and pro vided with a winged nut, p. The head o" of the screw c is below the plates a vin the groove Q, so that this clamp can be moved longitudinally in the groove ICO A Some of the tongues O' are provided withY g4'6ev elastic bands T.
recesses r, containing staples, loops, or rin gss, which are about ush with the' 'uppere'dges'of the tongue, or project but slightly. On these loops or rings s the snap-hooks w catch, which 5 are attached to straps or heavy elastic bands T, provided at the opposite ends with springclamps y, for holdingthefends of shortvorirregif ular robes.
The operation is as follows: The fur robeW ro which is to be cleaned"isfsecured on t'hedr'u'm A in some suitable manner, as willbe described hereinafter, with the fur 011 the outside. The cylinderl or drinn AA rotates aboutv forty times in a minute. The brushor beaterFrotates in the same direction as the drum E, and thus brushes against the robe fastened on the drum. This brush makes-three hundred revolutions per minute. The boXE is filled-with sand' and `sawdust or'like material, which' is lrubbed in '20 arid-againstl the f ur `by l`the brush' ory beater F1 ijgoeylinder orrdrum A. `rIt finishes the `robe, perv-'feetlyfasiit'brushes the hairs` down 'asthey y'natur'.ftlly-.grow. The-sand and sawdust box E 1canfbefdispensedrwith, if desired, andthe brushes only used'iir cleaning the'robes; but
that depends entirely'on the condition-and elassof Ithe robe. vTherobe is held on the drum in different ways, aecordingto the size ot' thesame. If a large robe is to beheld onA the drnmer eylin` `4o- -der, one end of the robeis xplaced over one'of the groovesand is forced into this groove by meansof'the spiked'bar kor rail-I),whieh'is` -held in place at the ends yby the rabbet c,'band"A l,-andthe swiveled key N, and at themiddle, S11-by 'the sliding clamp S, whiehfean be adjusted, tot hold 'the bar or rail P in 'any one' of the lgrooves lli: onvone section of grooves M andgy tonguesO. "The other end ofthe robeis' held; 'in the-samemanner by a rail or bar, I, in' the opposite section of groovesv M and tongues O.
Thereby the robe will be stretched and Iheld ltautonvthe drum. If the robe is short, small, or' irregular, ouei endcanl be secured by means of Ia rail orbar, 1P,andthe-otherend is yheld by the springf clampsyy of strapsv or elastic bands, T, the; snaphooks-w ofvwhieh are hooked on the eyes or loops sof the tongues O; or both endsof the'robe canbe held by means of the straps or -As the cylinder'l or drumA-is hollow,`it can, fbe used' to soften kand clean furs by placing? "them intofthe drum, as has been customary heretofore. ,L 'Anykind of furs, robes, &e.,can be thor. f-oughly cleaned in a very short time by means' of my improved` machine withoutinjuring the furinfanymanner whatever. y u Having thus'd'escribed myinventin, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Ina machine for cleaning fur robes, the combination, with a revolving drum to which a the' robes 'areto befseeured,'"ot' a brush resting on the drum and contained in a longitudinal box adapted -to receive sawdust, sand, and like material, and of'as'e'ries of brushes for combing and smoothing the fur and removing the sand and sawdust that have been brushed nor beaten intojitto' cleanit,A substantially as 'hereinshownand described, and for the purfpose set forth.
