This invention 'relates to smoking pipes fand relates vmore particularly to va novel pipe where- "in the yuser Imay enjoy a free drawingtcondition at all times.
An important-object of rtheinventumis to provide an improvede-pipewherein thebowl is formed in two sections which :are Pcompletely ydetachable rfrom each other to -correctanysituation tending to interfere with this free-drawing action.
The-smoking pipe of the present invention is to .be distinguished `from v.pipes wherein the bowl --is supported in a socket and vis removable therefrom for the purpose Lof cleaning. In such pipes fthe bowl ,section has -one .or a vnumber .of .small fopenngsin ,the lower wall, forming smekepassages. After :a period of use, these openings become clogged and can only be cleaned with considerable difculty. Moreover, if `one :starts to smoke and nds the openings clogged he ,can .clean the pipe only 'by removing all the tobacco .and starting fresh.
In accordance with vthe-present invention the upper section of the bowl is formed with a ycon- .tinuous bore from top to bottom, 4the bore preferably being uniformly tapered .and having its larger diameter at its upper yend. This :upper section is supported `in interlocked relation von the lower bowl :section which has ,a vertical opening yleading to a bore through the stein section. When mounted as aforesaid, the bowl may be lled in the usual manner andthe upper bowl section Athen detached romthe lower section `for the pur-pose of removing any A`tobaccoparticles in the vertical opening.
Alternatively, the pipe may be loaded while inv detached relation, the user placing a nger over the lower end of the bore to prevent tobacco from falling through. He then mounts the upper lled section of the ybowl on the lower section and proceeds to smoke while enjoying a free passage of the smoke through the lower end of this upper section. Should he experience a clogging action. the upper section is removed without disturbing the tobacco, the obstruction removed from the opening in the lower bowl section, and the parts replaced.
It will thus be apparent that a further object of the present invention is to provide a twosection bowl wherein the only place any obstruction can occur is in the lower bowl section which is readily accessible.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a smoking pipe embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an exploded view showing a central section taken through thetwo bowl sections.
Fig. i3 is similiar `to Fig. 2 but shows the parts in assembled relation.
Fig. 411s "a plan f-view v'of the lower surface of the upper bowl section.
Fig. 'f5 is a 'broken plan View of Vthe `lower bowl section and a portion of the stern.
Fig. e'6 is a broken section showing a modified torni ci the invention.
'Fig'. "7 is a broken 'section showing another modified formfoi" the invention.
'The several forms of the invention Adiffer mainly Vintheparticular means -for attachment of the upper bowl section to vthe lower. inasmuch 'as a lsmoker who desi-res to .enjoy a completely free draw might remove the upper V'section a number nof :times during his smoke, it is `preerable to employ some quick-'acting joining means such as la bayonet type -o joint oran |interrupted thread, a-l-thoughfan ordinary screw -thread may be used.
The rst formef Athe invention shown in Figs. '1 to 5 eiiects locking action by about Ia quarter turnfof -one part 'relative to the-other. The upper 'bowl section I0 is ofthe usual external contour and is formed with a vertical, tapered 'bore II. :Sorne'taper is preferable to a boreof `uniform A'diameter since the taper hel-ps to retain all the to- 'bacco inthe lupper bowl section. The degree fof taper is a matter of choice, the important consideration being that `the Vbore be substantially uninterrupted, ye. g., characterized by the absence of Va perforated lower wall.
At `its lower end lthe upper bowl section is formed with a seat -I'-2 vand extending ibelow such s'eatr-there is fformed yan annular projection or male portion I3 whose contour is generally oval or elliptically shaped and whose side walls are undercut. The lower bowl section I4 is formed with an annular seat I5 of the same external diameter and contour as seat I2 and which receives the latter face-to-face contact to prevent leakage.
The upper wall of the lower bowl section is provided with an elliptical opening or female portion I6 shaped and proportioned as to size as to receive the male portion I3, the walls of such portions being inclined as shown to secure the desired dove-tailed or interlocking relation. Thus when the male portion is inserted in the female portion and given a partial rotation the upper section is locked to the lower section. An internal annular seat I'I is provided at the lower end of female portion I6 which receives the lower surface I8 of the upper projection I3.
A tapered opening I9 leads downwardly from seat Il', the upper end thereof being preferably of the same diameter as the diameter of the lower end of bore II with which it is aligned 3 when the parts are joined. The lower end of bore I9 communicates with a horizontal smoke passage 20 in stem section 2|.
The removable mouthpiece 22 is carried by the stem section, the particular joining means forming no part of the present invention.
In use, it is preferred to rst remove the upper bowl section from the lower, place ones linger over the lower end of tapered bore Il 'and then fill the bore with tobacco, 1compressing the mass as much as desired, and leaving no part of the mass extending below the lower end of the bore. The upper bowl section is now mounted on'the lower bowl section and the user lights the pipe and proceeds to smoke in the usual fashion.
If any obstruction is experienced in the smoke.
passage, the upper bowl section is removed, the obstruction cleared from the lower bowl'section as by Iblowing out the offending particle, the tobacco in the lower end of bore Il slightly compressed upwardly, and the parts re-assembled. 'Any tarry residues in the lower end of the bore or in openings i9-20 can be readily removed, and the pipe always retained in prime smoking condition.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 6 the construction is largely the same as in the first embodiment except that in order to secure a more positive seal between the bowl sections, each of meeting surfaces l2 and I5 of the upper and lower bowl sections, respectively, are formed with annular recesses 2 and' 25 and a metal or plastic ring 26 is secured, as by means of cementing, in one of such recesses, preferably the lower one. Thus, when the bowl sections are assembled a more nearly air-tight seal is effected.
In the second modied form shown in Fig. 7 the upper section 21 has a bore 28 of substantially uniform diameter throughout its length and the lower section 29 has a tapered opening 30 whose upper end'is of substantially the same diameter as the lower end of bore 28 and which leads to the smoke passage 3l in the stem section 32.
In this instance, the meeting surface 33 and 34 of the upper and lower bowl sections, respectively, are ground flat and are formed with annular recesses 35 and 36 which receive ringshaped magnets 37 and 38 although only one of the rings may be magnetized. When assembling the bowl sections, the upper section may be lmoved across surface 34 with a wiping action to remove any particles on the meeting surfaces.
While three forms or embodiments of the in- ,out departing from the principles thereof.
What I claim is: A smoking pipe including a bowl formed in two superimposed sections provided with meeting 'surfaces and a stem portion leading generally horizontallyfrom the lower section, such stem portion having a smoke passage therein, the upper section having a tapered bore extending from its upper to its lower end and being of smaller diameter at its lower end, the upper surface of the lower section having a tapered bore leading into the smoke passage, the upper end of said bore being of substantially the same size as, and being axially aligned with, the lower end of the upper section bore when the upper section is mounted on the lower section, and means for releasably securing the meeting surfaces of the bowl sections together, such means comprising a generally oval-shaped male portion of dovetailed cross-sectional contour extending outwardly from one of the surfaces, the other surface having a recess shaped complemental to and which receives the male portion in interlocked relation upon a partial rotation of the parts.
