This invention also-contemplates'anovel" means of releasing the blades for movement from the magazine in which they'are contained when the magazine is inserted into=the body of the razor.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a magazine type safety razor wherein a stack of blades may be placed within the body of the razor and wherein means areprovidedfor ejecting a used blade and at thesame time placing a new blade in shaving position.
Another object of the invention is toprovide a magazine type safety razor which is simple and efficient in operation.
A further object of the invention isto provide a safety razor and a magazine having a stack of blades releasably confined therein wherein means are provided on the razor for'rel'easing the blades for movement-from the magazine when the magazine is inserted into the razor.
Other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claims and may be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, of which-there is one sheet, which by way of illustration shows a preferred embodiment of the invention and what I now consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applying the principles of my invention. Other embodiments of the invention may be used without departing from the, scope of the present invention as set forth in the appended claims.

The cap 22 has a dovetailed groove 32*formed in'th'e under side thereof. A slide member 34 is slidably arranged within the groove 32 and is supported by the cap 22. The slide 34 projects below the surface 28- of the cap 22 an amount substantially equal to the thickness of a blade. The under side 35 of the slide moves over the surfaces It and 2t of'the body 10.
Thechamber l2 formed in the body is: adapted toireceive a magazine 38 having a. front wall 48, a rear'wall l2,and' end walls M. A stackof. blades Edistarranged within the magazine 38 and the blades 3 6 are. releasably contained within the magazine by means of the movable end walls. 44. The end walls 44 are formed integrally with the bottom wall. 480i the magazine. The magazine 38 is slit at. each. of. the corners thereof so that. the end walls 44" may be bent inwardly asshownin Fig. 8. The upper end of each wall 44 is provided with an inwardly bent portion 50.
The magazine 38 is provided with a pair of springs 52 in the bottom thereof. Each of the springs has a portion 54, and each of the portions 54 is normally deflected in opposite directions. The blades 46 are stacked within the magazine 38 against the force of the springs 52, and the end walls 44 are then bent inwardly as shown in Fig. 8 until the bent portions 50 rest upon the top blade of the stack so as to confine the blades 46 within the magazine.
The cap 22 is provided with a notch 56 at each side thereof. The notches 56 form cam surfaces with which the bent portions 50 of the end walls 44 are cooperable upon insertion of the magazine into the chamber 12 so as to deflect the end walls 44 into their vertical position as shown in Fig. 4 and thereby permitting movement of the blades 46 out of the upper end of the magazine under the influence of the springs 52. A more complete disclosure and description of the magazine unit for use with the razor disclosed herein are set forth in my (so-pending application Serial No. 165,811, filed June 2, 1950, for Blade Magazine for a Razor.
A detachable cover 60 is provided for closing the lower open end of the chamber H2. The
cover 6! comprises a channel-shaped strip of metal having an opening 62 in each of the side walls thereof. The body I6 is provided with projections '64 cooperable with the openings 62 to detachably detain the cover 60 on the body Ill. A handle 66, a portion of which is shown in Fig. 1, is secured to the cover 60 by means of a rivet 68. The cover 6!! provides a means for retaining the magazine 38 within the chamber I2. The rear wall 42 of the magazine (Fig. 8) is engageable with the surface 28 on the cap 22 so as to limit the upward movement of the magazine into the chamber l2, in which position the magazine is held by the cover 60. The rear wall 42 of the magazine is provided with a notch 10 to permit movement of the slide 34 across the top of the magazine.
The blades 46 which are adapted to be used with the razor disclosed herein are provided with a cut-out portion 12 at the rear edge thereof so as to provide rearwardly projecting lugs 14. A notch 1'6 is provided in the rear edge of the blades 46. The front corners of each blade are cut out to provide notches 18 to accommodate lugs 74 of another blade 46. As is clearly shown in Fig. 7, when the blades are in engagement on the surface 15, the shaving edge 80 of the rearwardly disposed blade is maintained in spaced relation to the back edge of the forwardly disposed blade.
When the magazine 38 is inserted into the body of the razor and the cover 60 is locked in place the blades 46 are biased upwardly by means of the springs 52 against the under side 35 of the slide 34. When the slide is retracted into the position shown in Fig. 5, the top blade of the stack is moved upwardly against the under side 28 of the cap 22 and into the path of movement of the slide 34. The slide 34 is provided with a projection 82 which is engageable with the notch 16 in the blade. Forward movement of the slide is adapted to move the top blade of the stack forwardly on to the supporting surface 16 and in back of the previously positioned blade until the notches 18 in the new blade contact the lugs 14 of the positioned blade, and continued movement of the slide will eject the used blade from the razor and at the same time posi- 4 tion the new blade in shaving position on the surface I 5.
A plate 84 is secured to the slide 34 and provides a means for moving the slide 34. The slide 34 has rearwardly projecting ends 85 projecting through slots 8'! formed in the plate 84. The slide 34 is secured to the plate 84 by means of the pins 88. The slide has a cut-out portion 88 at the rear edge thereof to accommodate the downwardly turned end 90 of the plate 84. The cap 22 is also provided with a cut-out portion 92 to accommodate the portion SI! of the plate 84. The cap 22 has a projection 94 thereon which projects into a groove 96 in the plate 84. The projection 94 cooperates with the end 98 of the plate 84 to provide a means for limiting the rear- V ward movement of the slide 34.
The cap 22 isformed of spring metal and the end'lfiil thereof is normally adapted to rest upon the portions 30 formed on the body 19. As previously pointed out, the end I09 is sprung upwardly slightly by the movement of a blade 46 thereunder so that the blade 45 when arranged in shaving position is clamped against the surface It by means of the cap 22. The portions 35 have a height of slightly greater than onehalf the thickness of the blade so that when there is no blade in shaving position on the surface It, the shaving edge 8!) of the top blade of a stack within the magazine will pass beneath the edge I02 of the cap 22, and thereafter the blade 46 will spring the end I58 of the cap 22 upward slightly in the manner described.
A socket screw 194 is provided in the plate 84 and has an end H36 thereof arranged to contact the vertical edge of the cut-out portion 92 of the cap 22 so as to permit adjustment of the slide 34 with respect to the cap 22 when the slide is arranged in its forward position. The screw I04 therefore provides a means for adjusting the position of the blade 46 on the supporting surface [6 so that the closeness of the shave to be obtained may be regulated.
The plate 84 may be provided with grooves 58 on the top surface thereof so that the plate may be easily gripped for operation of the razor.
It will be noted in Figs. 1 and 5 that the top blade of the stack within the magazine is urged against the under side of the cap 22 when the slide is retracted and that the positioned blade is also held against the under side of the cap 22. Since the slide 34 projects below the under side of the cap an amount equal to the thickness of a blade, it will be seen that forward movement of the slide will move the top blade on to the surface [6 in the same plane as the positionedblade, thereby insuring that the top blade will eject the positioned blade and also insuring that not more than one of the blades in the stack will be moved forwardly by the slide 34.
When the last blade of a stack within the magazine has been used, the handle 65 and the cover 6!] are removed from the body and the springs 52 will then be operable to force the used magazine 38 from the chamber I2.
While I have illustrated .and described a ber therein and a blade supporting surface adjacent the upper end of said chamber, a
magazine having a plurality of blades therein, movable means on said magazine for releasably confining said blades therein, a cap secured to said body and providing a cover for the upper end of said chamber, said magazine being insertable in said chamber through the lower end thereof, means on said cap cooperable with said movable means on said magazine upon insertion of said magazine into said chamber for releasing said blades for movement from said magazine, a detachable cover for the lower end of said chamber, and a slide member for successively positioning said blades in shaving position on said supporting surface.
2. A razor as set forth in claim 1 wherein said movable means on said magazine comprises-at least one of the walls of said magazine.
3. A razor as set forth in claim 1 wherein a handle for said razor is secured to said detachable cover for said chamber.

A' razor comprising a body having a chamber therein and a blade supporting surface adjacent the upper end of said chamber, a stack of blades in said chamber, a cap secured to said body, said cap having a dovetailed groove in the, underside thereof, a slide member arranged for sliding movement within said groove,
5 Number and projecting below the underside of said cap, and said cap being provided with means cooperable with said plate for limiting movement of said slide in one direction, means on said plate for adjusting the position of said slide with respect to said cap when said slide is in operative position, and means for biasing said blades against the underside of said slide, said biasing means being operable to move the top blade of said stack against the underside of said cap when said slide is moved in one direction, said slide upon movement thereof in the opposite direction being operable to position said top blade in shaving position on said supporting surface, and means for moving said slide, comprising a plate secured thereto and extending above said cap.
