' ASH TRAY Filed June 3, 1946 INVENTOR Chegfer B. C/CIPP ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 27, 1951 UNI TED STATES ASH TRAY t B-Q -Oelsh l Applicationlune s, 1946,;s i i ndev noss :This invention relates .to tray-like receptacles for use as repositories for cigarsor cigarettes.
An object of the .invention is to provide a device of the character described whichis comparatively small .insize but which has a large holding capacity for partially consumed cigarettes which are momentarily set aside.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ash tray in which the cigarette-holding means serves as an automatic snufier when combustion of the cigarette reaches a selectively preeterinined degree.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described constructed of a group of readily separable and easily cleanable parts.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an ash tray construction which lends itself particularly well to the use of materials having different physical natures in its construction so that a comparatively wide variety of color or decorative contrasts may be achieved.
The invention possesses other objects and fea tures of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood, however, that variations in the showing made by the said drawings and description may be adopted within the scope of the invention as set forth in the claim.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmental top plan view of one form of tray.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of an ash tray embodying the preferred form of my invention.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional View taken in the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of one form of holder cap.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken in the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a top plan view of a modified form of holder cap. a
In carrying out my invention I provide a receptacle, shown in the drawing as having a rectangular shape but which may be constructed in any desired geometrical form, having a bottom 7 and marginal walls 8 rising from the perimeter thereof to define a recess or well 9. A preferably circular recess I i is provided in and centrally of the upper surface of the bottom 1 and a threaded stud l2, formed integrally with the bottom rises upwardly from the center of the recess. A stem provided ,in the bott upper endoi' thereto t3 p ovided havingia centr r c ss it ws ab y threaded mos ec ve the stem J52, t e and iboaom, on which ithe t m n :ea i hote 1,
pth. .A circular ,,fia ,1ge .1 1, complementar in shape and ;-.thi n.e to th reces isizro M1 the low and .of the stern an sseats i. h ecess so that. a continuou iiu l suria e is m of 1 115 r ceptacl m .1 iismnnQ diWith, a emetrically reduced stud I8 adapted for snug push-fit engagement in a complementary recess i9 formed in skirt 2| and body of a holder cap 22 which may be of any desired shape and which is provided in its marginal surface 23 with vertically extending notches 24. The notches, as will be seen in Figure 3, are for the purpose of holding cigarettes 26 in vertically disposed positions and perpendicular to the flange ii and the bottom l, the notches being of slightly lesser width than the diameter of the cigarette so that the latter is slightly compressed diametrically when pushed into a notch. This serves to securely hold the cigarette against dislodgement either under the force of its own weight or by shock forces created in the event that the ash tray should be accidently bumped. The holder cap 22 ma be made in a variety of forms to provide for greater or lesser cigarette holding capacity. In Figure 4 I have shown one in which but four notches 24 are provided while in Figure 2 a design is shown which is capable of receiving a total of eight cigarettes. In Figure 6 still another form is illustrated based on the general form of Figure 4 but provided with a plurality of top surface grooves 27 in which cigarettes may be rested in a recumbent position. In addition to providing for increased cigarette holding capacity in the cap element 22, I also augment this capacity by providing, as shown in Figure l, gusset portions 28 in each corner of the tray in each of which one or more grooves 29 may be provided as cigarette receptacles.
While it is contemplated to construct all of the elements making up the assembly of the ash tray of metal it is also contemplated to employ materials of dissimilar nature in its construction. For instance, the receptacle or the stem member l3 may, if desired, be made of Bakelite or other fire-resistant moldable substance of a like nature or a combination of plastic and metal may be employed in the respective parts. It is however preferable that the holder cap 22 be made of e tm l 3 metal regardless of what materials are employed for the other parts. Not only is this desirable for the reason that the hot coal of the cigarette may frequently contact the cap but, when the latter occurs, heat absorption and dissipation by the metal will serve to automatically extinguish the cigarette. In addition the flat upper surface .of the cap may be employed as a table against which the burning tip of the cigarette may be crushed and extinguished if desired.
It will be noted, and this is an important constructional feature, that the flange I! extends radially beyond the cigarettes which may be held in the notches as shown in Figure 3. Thus even,
though the cigarette be placed or pushed downwardly so that its hot end engages the bottom of the ash tray the contact will not create surface disfigurement which might occur if the contacted surface were made of meltable plastic or other material.
Having thus described my invention in detail, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an ash tray, a receptacle having at least one side Wall and a bottom having a centrally disposed recess, and a vertically disposed cigarette rest comprising a stem having a radially extending flange of heat resisting material positioned on the lower end portion of the stem and adapted to seat in said recess and tobe coextensive therewith, and an element extending radially outwardly from the upper end portion of said stem, said 4 a element being parallel with and having a smaller radius than said flange, and said element having a plurality of notches in its periphery for gripping and holding cigarettes when said flange is positioned in said recess in parallel relation with said stem, in perpendicular relation to said element and said flange, and radially inwardly of the periphery of said flange.
