' JEWELERS VISE Filed Nov. 7, 1945 mms/vro/e flex/m C 57000460 Aime/15w Patented Nov. 20, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a jewelers vise the object being to provide a new and improved structure involving a pair of jaws, one member of each pair being stationarily supported and the corresponding opposing jaws movably supported by a sliding block to bring one or the other of the said movable jaws to clamping relation with the companion jaw.
These and other objects and features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred structural form and relationship of the elements embodying my invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing my improved jewelers vise.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In its preferred form the device consists of a sheet metal base I having side flanges 2 and 3 and has at its opposite ends vertical flanges 3 and 4 preferably integral with the base. The said flanges each have an aperture in which the adjusting shaft 5 is rotatable. The shaft has a knurled end 6- exteriorly of the upwardly extending element 3 by means of which it may be rotated in the flanges 3 and 4 which are in parallel relation. At the upper end of the flange 3 is a jaw l and at the upper end of the flange 4 is a like jaw 8 which are thus fixed in position. The opposing jaws 9 and ID of the respective pair are fixed to a block if having a longitudinal aperture in which the shaft 5 is threaded.
The meeting faces of the respective pair of jaws may be of any desired form and preferably are notched as indicated at l2 to permit the hub of a gear or a small shaft like element to be secured therebetween, as for instance the shaft of a watch gear. By clamping the shaft and gear between a pair of opposed jaws, the shaft may be removed as by means of a jewelers hammer.
The opposed faces of the jaws may be otherwise shaped if desired and one of said pair may be smaller than the other and may differ in vertical height as may be required in use of the device with instrumentalities of greater or less length.
While I have shown the base member as being formed of sheet material it may be formed in any approved manner as by a casting without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
In any case the block H is less in length than the space between the flanges 3 and 4 of the base element whereby, through rotation of the screw shaft 5, the jaws 9 or I0 may be correspondingly moved toward or from engagement with the companion jaw l or 8.
It is believed evident from the foregoing description that the device is comparatively simple in construction and therefore inexpensive in character and that the various features and objects of the invention are attained by the described relationship of parts.
Having thus briefly described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A vise comprising a base plate having vertically downturned longitudinally extending side flanges defining supporting legs, and vertically upturned end flanges with central aligned transverse apertures therein, a manually rotatable screw rotatably supported through said apertures, a rectangularly shaped block slidably mounted upon said plate and having a threaded opening to threadably engage said screw, an upwardly and angularly extending jaw secured at its lower end upon the top edge of one of said end flanges, with its upper end being vertically notched and curved inwardly parallel to said plate, and an upwardly and angularly extending movable jaw support mounted upon said block with its end portion being vertically notched and curved outwardly parallel to said plate for registry with said stationary jaw.
ARVID C. STODDARD.
