' DISPENSING MACHINE Filed March 23. 1946 2 SHEETSSHEET 2 Patented Nov. 20, 1951 l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE'.
DISPENSING MACHINE Samuel Frank, Houston, Tex.
Application March 23, 1946, Serial No. 656,755
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a dispensing machine.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine of the character described particularly designed for dispensing oil cloth, and the like, from rolls.
It is another object of the invention to provide a machine of the character described whereby the quantity of material, purchased by the customer, may be readily measured as the same is unwound from the roll.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a dispenser, a roller onto which the dispensed material may be wound into a roll, to be delivered to the customer, as it is unwound from the storage roll.
The invention also embodies novel means for severing the material to be delivered to the customer from the material stored on the storage roll.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation.
Figure 2 is a horizontal, cross-sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary, vertical, sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary, front elevation.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary, plan view, partly in section; and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary, vertical, sectional view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate the samep-arts in each of the figures, the numeral I designates the roll of stored material to be dispensed. The numeral 2 designates a cabinet having the rearwardly declining shelves 2a, 2a forming a pocket 2b between them in which the roll I is stored.
In front of, and slightly beneath, the pocket 2b, there is a transverse tube 3 over which the material to be dispensed is fed as sold and this tube is provided with a lengthwise slot K.
As the oil cloth, or other material, is unwound from the roll it may be measured by the vertical measuring tape 5 and is temporarily wound around the roller 6.
There is a gripping device, designated generally by the numeral 1, which is moved into contact with the unwound material so as to hold the material firmly gripped between said gripping device and the tube 3 while the unwound material is being cut off as hereinafter described.
This gripping device embodies the spaced jaws la, la which are pivoted, at one end, to the bracket lb and whose other ends have a gripping roller lo between them which may be held in gripping relation with the unwound material by means of a pull spring "id. The gripping device may be manipulated by a suitable grip, or handle, Te.
There is a knife 3 which is slidably mounted on a transverse rod 9 and has the sharp cutting lades It, ill arranged in angular relation with respect to the material being cut, as shown in Figure 5. These blades project through the slots i and are provided to cut off the required amount or" material for the purchaser and the cut oii material is wound around the roller 6 which may then he slipped out of the dispensed roll and placed back in the end retainers H, II.
The numerals l2, l2 designate end brackets which are secured to the ends of the cabinet 2 and project forwardly therefrom, as clearly illustrated in Figures 2, 3 and 4. The retainers i I, I l, above referred to, are secured to the inner sides of said brackets at their lower ends and the ends of the transverse tube 3 and of the rod ii are secured to said brackets I2.
The drawings and description are illustrative merely while broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A dispensing machine comprising, a cabinet having a transverse shelf to support a roll of oil cloth or other sheet-like material, spaced brackets secured to the ends of the cabinet and which project forwardly therefrom and whose lower ends areformed into inside, transversely aligned retainers, a receiving roller for the dispensed material whose ends are mounted in said retainers, a dispensing tube whose ends are anchored to said brackets and over which the material to be dispensed is fed, said tube having a longitudinal slot across which the material passes, a gripping device mounted on the tube adjacent the slot and arranged to be brought into gripping relation with the material to grip and retain the unwound material between said device and tube, a transverse rod whose ends are anchored to the respective brackets in front of, and spaced from, said tube, a knife mounted to slide lengthwise along said rod and having a blade which projects into the slot therefrom and whose lower ends are formed with inside retainers which are transversely aligned and provided to receive the ends of a receiving roller, a dispensing tube whose ends are anchored to the brackets and over which the material" to" be dispensed isfed, said tube having a longitudinal slot across which the material passes, a gripping device mounted on the.
tube adjacent the slot and arranged to he brought into gripping relation with the material to grip and retain the unwound material between the device and tube, a transverse rod whose ends are anchored to the respective brackets in front of, and spaced from, said tube, a knife mountedv to slide lengthwise on the rod and having a 4 blade which projects into the slot of the tube and which is adapted to sever the unwound material.
