UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEXTER AVERY, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE TEXTILE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CASKET TRIMMING OR ORNAMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Application filed-August 17, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEXTER AVERY, of Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Gasket Trimming or Ornament, of which the following is a specification and description.
My invention relates to that class of caskettrimmings which are made of some rigid or firm material-as woodor metal-and ofspherical or curved form, and which are covered by hein g platted with thread or some textile material; and its object is'to keep the thread or, textile material together and in place as it is being applied to the rigid material, or to prevent the thread or textile material from slipping out of place either when it is applied or afterward, and I accomplish this by the means substantially as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure I is a side view of a screw-knob for a casket, made according to my invention. Fig-II is a plan view of the same. Fig. III is a side view of the mold, having its surface roughened or prepared with grooves previous tob eiug covered with thetextile material, and Fig. IV is a plan view of the same.
In the manufacture of casket-trimmings of this class-those covered with a textile material and of a curved or spherical form-it has heretofore been the practice to turn or form the articles from some rigid material-as wood or metal-with a smooth surface, and afterward cover them with a textile material, usually by plattiug them with thread in a platting-machine; and in this process the thread slips from the smooth convex portions of the surface, and gathers into the concave portions by the action of the machine in platting, so that when the article is finished there is an excess of thread in the concave portions, while the convex portions are so imperfectly covered as to expose, in places, the surface of the wood or metal. My invention obviates all this difficulty, so that when finished an equal distribution of thread or textile material ovcrlthje whole surface of the article covered is the result.
In the drawings, 2 in Fig. III representsa wooden screw-knob mold, which isprovided on its convex surface with a series of grooves,
No. 257,455, dated May 9, 1882.
(Nomodehl 5, which grooves may be in the form of corrugations either angular or curved in their crosssection, or of any desirable form, which, in'
such as sizingand then dipped into or coated over ,with sand,so that when dry the article shall have a rough surface. When the article is afterward platted with thread this rough surface, whether made by corrugations or grooves or saud, will prevent the thread from slipping froma convex portion to a concave portion of the surface, and after being platted or covered, the textile covering will be evenly distributed over the whole surface of the article, and will present a much bctterappearance than when covered upon a smooth surface, as-
in theordinary manner.
If used for a screw-knob, the screw 4 may be'secured in the knob 2 and used with or without a metal plate, 3, beneath the knob. Of course any other article to be used as a trimming for caskets may be treated in the same way with a roughened surface before being covered with the thread or textile material.
In this manufacture of casket-trimmings I denominate the article to be covered with the thread or textile fabric the mold, whether made of wood or metal, or of any other sufficiently rigid or hard material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is An improved casket trimming or ornament, consisting of a rigid mold, having its surface corrugated or roughened and platted'or covered with thread or textilefabric, substantially as setforth.
DEXTER AVERY.
