The present invention relates to plow colters and more particularly to plow colter accessories comprising lug attachment for causing the colter to rotate at an increased rate.
Heretofore, it has been proposed to provide colter blades with driving lugs or louvers formed of a portion of the colter blade or welded thereto at spaced intervals displaced inwardly from the outer periphery of the colter. This type of construction is shown, described and claimed in my co-pending patent application Serial Number 12,777, led March 3, 1948. In certain instances it has been found that it would be advantageous if conventional colter blades could be modified readily and equipped with driving lugs to insure rotation of the colter and to provide a cutting action by the periphery.
It, therefore, is an object of the present invention to provide an accessory for plow colters which is readily attached to provide driving lugs.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide an arrangement for plow colters whereby driving lugs may be adjusted to positions selected a certain dist-ance from the outer periphery of the colter.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide means whereby conventional plow colters are readily converted to the type which provides a driving action tending to increase the peripheral speed of the colter.
Other and further objects of the present .invention subsequently will become apparent by reference to the following description taken in conjunction With the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. l shows a plow in use which is preceded by a colter embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view of a colter provided with structures embodying the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a partial cross-sectional view of a colter and accessory therefor shown in Fig. 2 as seen in the direction of the arrows along the line .3-3;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of a colter accessory as seen in the direction of the arrows along the line 4 4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is ra cross-sectional view of a colter accessory as seen in the direction of the arrows along the line 5 5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 but showing a modification of the aperture provided in the plow colter;

Referring to Fig. l of the drawing it -will be seen that there has been illustrated a plow 2l which is attached to a plow beam 22. Secured to the plow beam 22 by means of a U-bolt 23 or suitable clevice is a vertically positioned shaft 24. The shaft 24 carries an arm 25 which supports a bearing member upon which the plow colter 28 rotates. The plow colter 25 is provided with a plurality of driving lugs 21.
From Fig. 2 it will be seen that the driving lugs 21 are spaced at regular intervals a short distance inwardly from the outer periphery. The details of each of the driving lugs 21 are readily apparent by examination of Figs. 3, 4 and 5.
It will be noted that each of the driving lugs 21 is composed of two members 28 and 29 having similar shapes. The members 25 and 29 are so mounted, as is apparent from Fig. 4, as to provide a tapered or wedged action so that cach driving member is readily inserted into the soil. The two portions 23 and 253 are retained together by means of a screw or bolt 3|. In order that the two portions 28 and 29 may be properly oriented and retained in such position the members 28 and 29, respectively, are provided with square inserts 32 and 33 whicht into a square opening 32' in the colter blade 26.
For certain types of soil it may be desirable to change the position of the driving lugs 21 and this can be accomplished by providing longitudinal slots 34 as shown in Fig. 6 which are each arranged along a radius of the colter 26.
While in Figs. 3 6 1the lug 21 has been shown as being held in position by means of a keying portion such as the square members 32 and 33 it, of course, will be appreciated that any other configuration might be employed which serves to hold the two portions 28 and 2S in. proper position. Thus the members 32 and 33 in place of being square could have a cylindrical shape similar to that illustrated in Fig. '7 from which it will be noted that the member 3E! has a ilattened side. 'I'he member 3@ corresponds to the portion 32 of the lug portion 28.
If desired a lug such as that shown in Fig. 8 may be employed. This lug consists of two portions 35 and 36 which are held in position by reduced diameter portions entering into a suitable hole formed in the colter 26. The member 35 has a threaded aperture for receiving the threaded stem of the cooperating member 36.
Another modification is illustrated in Figs. 9, 10, and 11, showing a tapered lug 31 held in position by a flat-headed screw 39. The lug 31 is provided with a keyed portion or square shoulder which lits into a cooperating recess in the colter blade 26. adjustable arrangement the recess and hole 'may be elongated as illustrated in Fig. 13. While a square shouldered keying portion of the lug 31 has been shown in Figs. 9, 10, 11 and 13, it of course, will be appreciated that any other type of keyed shoulder may be employed such as the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 12.
In Fig. 12 the member 4l which fits into the recess in thecolter 26 is generally circular but has a attened portion. In place of this flattened portion it, of course, will be appreciated that a conventional key or other locking device may be employed to prevent the tapered lug 31 from being displaced from its proper posi tion.
The arrangement shown in Fig. 14. illustrates how a tapered lug may be provided with a threaded stem for insertion into a threaded aperture in the colter blade 28. Thus the lug illustrated has a body 42 provided with a suitable slot for receiving a screwdriver. The body 42 which rests on the outer surface of the colter blade 26 has a threaded stem 43 which fits into the threaded opening of the blade. A threaded opening in the blade 26 can also be utilized to receive a lug in the form of an Allen screw 44 which is illustrated in Fig. 15. Such screws after insertion can be tapered by grinding if desired.
While for the purpose of illustrating and describing the present invention, certain specific embodiments have been illustrated in the drawings, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited thereby since such varia- I tions are contemplated as may be commensurate with the spirit and scope of the invention, set forth in the accompanying claims.
What I desire to protect by United States Letters Patent is claimed as follows:
1. The combination comprising a rotary plow colter provided with a plurality of apertures spaced apart inwardly a certain distance from the -periphery of the colter, a plurality of lugs having a head and a shank, said shank tting into the aperture in said colter, said head protruding from the face of said colter, and means for fastening said lugs to said colter.
2. The combination comprising a rotary plow colter provided with a plurality of apertures spaced apart and located radially inwardly a certain distance from the periphery of the colter, a plurality of lugs each having a head and a shank, said shank fitting into the aperture in said colter, said head protruding from the face of said colter and having an inclined surface sloping in the direction of rotation of said colter, and means for fastening said lugs to said colter to prevent displacement thereof.
3. The combination comprising a rotary plow colter provided with a plurality of apertures spaced apart a short distance inwardly from the If it is desired to provide an periphery of said colter, a plurality of lugs each having a head and a shank, said shank being keyed into the aperture of said colter, said head protruding from the face of said colter and having an inclined surface sloping in the direction of rotation of said colter, and ,means for fastening said lugs to said colter.
4. The combination comprising a rotary plow colter provided with a plurality of regularly spaced apertures located in a circle inwardly from the periphery of the colter, a plurality of lugs each having a head and a shank, said shank tting into the aperture in said colter, said head protruding from the face of said colter, means for preventing rotation of said head, and means for fastening said lugs to said colter.
5. The Ycombination comprising a rotary plow colter provided with a plurality of apertures spaced inwardly from the periphery of the colter in a circle, each aperture having at least one flat Surface, a plurality of lugs each having a head and a shank, said shank fitting into the aperture of said colter, and having a iiat surface cooperating with the flat surface of said aperture, said head protruding from the face of said colter, and means for fastening said lugs to said colter.
6. The combination comprising a rotary plow colter provided with a plurality of spaced apart apertures arranged in a circle inwardly from the periphery of the colter, a plurality of lugs each having a head and a shank, said shank being keyed to the aperture in said colter, said head protruding from the face of said colter and having a relatively thin edge leading in the direction of rotation of said colter, and means for fastening said lugs to said colter.

The combination comprising a rotary plow colter provided with a plurality of radially arranged slots having a common radius, a plurality of lugs each having a head and a shank, said shank being positioned within a slot in said colter, said head protruding from the face of the colter and having a relatively thin edge leading in the direction of rotation of said colter, and means for securing said lugs in adjusted position in said slots.
8. The combination comprising a rotary plow colter provided with a plurality of apertures spaced apart in a circle a certain distance within the periphery of the colter, and a plurality of lugs each fitted into one of said apertures in a fixed position and projecting from the'face of said colter to engage the soil to increase the peripheral speed.
9. The combination comprising a rotary plow colter provided Ywith a plurality of apertures spaced a Ycertain distance inwardly from the periphery of the colter, and a plurality of lugs each held in fixed position in an aperture, each lug projecting from the rface of the colter and having an inclined surface sloping in the direction of rotation to engage the soil to increase OAKLEY D.
