My present invention relates to water boiler arrangements. 7
It is an object of my present invention to provide a water boiler which can be heated either by an oil burner or another heating unit.
It is a further object of my present invention to provide a water boiler which can be heated by difierent types of fuels.
It is still another object of my present invention to provide a water boiler provided with 1 means preventing heating of the same simultaneously by an oil burner and other heating means.
The novel features which I consider as characteristic for my invention .are set forth in particular in the appended claim. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the fOllOWing description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanyin drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational section through the water boiler arrangement according to my present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a slightly schematic perspective view of the heater.
As shown in the drawing, the combined heater includes a first boiler Ill, provided with adouble wall ll entirely surrounding the combustion chamber I2 within this boiler.
At the bottom of the combustion chamber I2, I provide the opening 13 through'which the nozzle portion I4 of the oil burner [5 reaches into the bottom portion of the combustion chamber Substantially at half the height of the boiler I0, I provide the double walled deflecting member l6 secured to the double wall I I of the boiler H! as shown, namely so that the water space I! Within the deflecting member l6 communicates with the water space 18 within the double wall H.
In addition to this deflecting member I 6, which serves a special purpose, I provide additional double wall baflies l9 and 20, also communicating. with the water space l8 of the double wall ll so as to increase the heating surface of the boiler HI.
At the upper end of the combustion chamber I2, I provide an outlet opening 2| communicating with the smoke pipe 22.
The upper portion of the boiler I0 is provided in the usual manner-with a safety valve 23, a steam gauge 24. and a water or steam supply outlet 25. i Y
In accordance with my present invention, I combine with the above described boiler the additional boiler 28 having also a double wall 21 and forming a combustion chamber 28. This combustion chamber 28 is subdivided by the grate 29 into a firing chamber 30 for solid fuel, and an ash pit 3 l.
. Access to the firing chamber 3|] is obtained by the firing door 32 and access to the ash pit by the ash pit door 33. v
As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the water jackets formed within'the double walls H and 21 of the boilers l0 and 26, respectively, are connected with each other by water pipes 34 arranged near the bottom of the boiler 26, and water pipes 35 arranged at the top of the boiler 26. These water pipes enable passage of the heated water from the double wall 21 of boiler 26 into the double wall I I of the boiler l0, and from there into the upper portion of the latter boiler. I
The combustion chamber 28 of boiler 26 is connected at its upper end by means of a connecting opening 36 with the combustion chamber I2 of boiler I0. I wish to note that this connecting opening through which the smoke from combustion chamber 28 passes into the combustion chamber I2 is arranged above the deflecting member l6 so as to prevent soot and ash particles from dropping into the bottom portion of the combustion chamber I2. Such soot and ash particles will drop upon the deflecting Wall and stay there until they are removed from the combustion chamber l2 through the door 31 provided in the front wall of boiler In.
In order to prevent simultaneous operation of both heating units as explained above, I provide a closure damper 38 in the opening 36 firmly secured to the operatin rod 39 turnable together with the same. This operating rod 39 is turnably iournalled at 40 and 4 I, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
This damper is movable by means of handle 42 secured to rod 39 from closing position into opening position, closing and opening, respectively, the opening 36 serving as smoke passage.
In order to prevent operation of the oil burner when the opening 36 is open, I provide the switch 43 operating the oil burner in well-known manner. If this switch is in on position, the oil burner is adapted to operate; if this switch is in off position, the oil burner cannot operate.
As shown in Fig. 2, the switch lever 44 is fulcrumed at its right end and connected by a connecting rod 45 with a lever 46 secured to the operating rod 39 as shown.
I wish to note that the connecting rod 45 is freely turnably pivoted at 4! and 48 to the switch operating lever 44 and the lever 45, respectively.
It is evident that if the closure damper 36 is secured to the operating rod 39 in the position shown in Fig. 2, turning of the handle 42 in direction of arrow 49 will result in simultaneous shutting off of the oil burner switch and opening of the damper. If, on the contrary, from the thus attained position, the handle 42 is turned against direction of arrow 49, the switch operating lever will move into on position, enabling operation of the oil burner, and simultaneously the damper 36 will be closed.
Thus, by the above described arrangement, it
is possible to prevent simultaneous operation of both heating units.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of heating arrangement, differing from the types described above.
While I have illustrated and described the invention as embodied in water heating arrangements, I do not intend to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of my invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of my invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention, and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claim.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A water boiler arrangement or system including the combination, of a first double walled boiler having a first combustion chamber therein and having a first opening at the bottom of the same leading into the first combustion chamber, the double walls in the first double walled boiler being sinuously bent back and forth in upward direction to form a sinuous flue connected to said first combustion chamber and in the upper portion being vertically spaced apart a sufficient distance to form a large upper chamber, and one side of said first double walled boiler having at iii least one header opening leading into the sinuous flue; a header normally closing the header opening; a fluid fuel burner extending inwardly through said first opening into said first combustion chamber; a second riser-less double walled boiler disposed exteriorly adjacent said first double walled boiler and built together therewith to form a rigid double boiler unit, said second riser-less double walled boiler having its second flue-less combustion chamber, the first double walled boiler being self-contained and having one double walled portion thereof separating the first combustion chamber therein from said second flue-less combustion chamber in said second riser-less double walled boiler, and
the two boilers having an internal interconnecting opening interconnecting the upper portion of said second flue-less combustion chamber in said second riser-less double walled boiler and an intermediate portion of said sinuous flue in said first double walled boiler; means for regulating and closing said internal interconnecting opening; means for accommodating heating means in said second flue-less combustion chamber, said second riser-less double Walled boiler having a further opening in the double wall thereof providing access to said second flue-less combustion chamber within the same; a smoke stack connected to the upper portion ofsaidsinuous flue in said first double walled boiler above andbeyond said internalinterconneoting opening, the latter providing communication for said second flue-less combustion chamber through the upper portion of said sinuous flue with said smoke stack; a riser connected to the large upper chamber in the upper portion of said first double walled boiler forming the space between the double walls thereof; and a plurality of pipes interconnecting the spaces between the double walls of the first boiler and of said second riserless double boiler at least adjacent to both sides of the boilers and at different levels with respect to each other.
