MACHINE FOR MAKING PLASTER CORNER REINFORCING STRIPS Filed May 24, 1948 FIG.
' INVENTOR. CHARLES D. HARVEY AGE/VT Patented Oct. 9, 1951 MACHINE FOR MAKING PLASTER CORNER ,REINFORCING STRIPS Charles D. Harvey, La Mesa, Calif., assignor to Carleton B. Schroeder Application May 24, 1948, Serial No. 28,873
6 Claims. 1
My invention relates to a machine for making plaster corner reinforcing strips, and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a machine of this class which very accurately shears and forms strips of material into angular in cross-section members for use in reinforcing plaster corners such as those in interior of building rooms or the like.
Second, to provide a machine of this class in which various materials may be readily used in the forming of corner reinforcing strips.
Third, to provide a machine of this class which produces a large volume of corner strips in proportion to its bulk.
Fourth, to provide a machine of this class having a bending and driving roller which performs the strips from flat stock into angular shape preliminary to the final forming of the angular reinforcing strip by the forming roller underneath which said bending and driving roller force the strip of material.
Fifth, to provide a machine of this class in which a bending and driving roller is positioned in a trough like forming ways member which is inclined toward said bending and driving roller so that material entering the forming ways member and being bent and driven by the bending and driving roller is gradually formed upwardly at its opposite edges at said inclined portions of trough like forming ways member.
Sixth, to provide a machine of this class which automatically shears, drivesand forms angular corner reinforcing strips when the flat stock is placed on the machine in alignment with the shearing rollers and the bending and driving roller.
Seventh, to provide a machine of this class which is very simple and easy to operate, and
Eighth, to provide a machine of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, efficient in operation and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as .will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims; reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon forming a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my machine for making plaster corner reinforcing strips. Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view thereof. Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken from the line 3-3 of Figure 1. Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken from the line 4-4 of Figure 1 and Figure 5 is a perspective view of the forming ways member of my machine, showing the forming ways member support omitted.
LII
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings. 7
The frame I, motor 2, belt 3, shafts 4 and 5, shearing rollers 6 and l, forming ways member 8, bending and driving roller 9, shaft I0, pulleys II and i2, belt l3, bearings l4, l5, l6 and I1, forming roller [8, fence I9, pulleys 2a and 2|, gears 22 and 23, and the shield 24 constitute the principal parts and portions of my machine for making plaster corner reinforcing strips.
The frame I is provided with legs Ia arranged to support the same, and the upper portion of this frame I is provided with a table top lb having its upper surface lc on a plane intermediate the axes of the shafts 4 and 5 on which the shearing rollers 6 and l are mounted. The shafts 4 and 5 are driven by the motor 2 having a pulley 2| on the shaft thereof engaged by a belt 3 passing over the pulley 2B of the shaft 4. The shaft 5 is provided with a gear 23 fixed thereon meshing with the gear 22 fixed on the shaft 4 so that the shafts 4 and 5 are synchronously operated by the gears 22 and 23. The bearings 16 and I! support the shaft 4 while similar bearings directly below the same support the shaft 5 on the frame l. Fixed on the shaft 4 is a pulley l2 engaging the belt 13 passing over the pulley H on the shaft in to the opposite end of which is fixed the forming and driving roller 9. This forming and driving roller 9 is provided with a serrated periphery 9a positioned within the trough shaped forming ways member 8, all as hown best in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings. This forming ways member 8 is angular in cross-section as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings and is supported by three similar angular in cross-section reinforcing members 8a, 8b and 8c welded or otherwise rigidly secured thereto. It will be noted that the one end 8d of the forming ways member 8 is inclined toward the axis of the bending and driving roller 9 and declining toward the shearing rollers 6 and l which are peripherally sharp rollers arranged to shear a strip of material from a large plate preliminary to the passage of said strip into engagement with the bending and driving roller 9. The forming roller l 8 is an idler roller having an angular in cross-section peripheral portion lBa adapted to bear on the material at the inner middle portion thereof within the trough shaped angular in cross-section forming ways member 8 all as shown best in Figure 3 of the drawings. It will be noted that the shaft Ill carrying the bending and driving roller 9 is journaled in the bearings l4 and I5 rigidly supported on the frame I. The guiding side l9a of the fence I9 is aligned at one side of the bending and driving roller 9 while the shearing rollers 6 and 1 operate in a plane at the opposite side of the bending and driving roller 9 so that C2 the middle of a strip of material cut from a sheet of material by the shearing rollers 6 and 1 is engaged by the driving and bending roller 9 which forces the material through the forming ways member 8 and beneath the forming roller l8.
The operation of my machine for making plaster corner reinforcing strips is substantially as follows:
A sheet of material is placed on the upper surface I c of the table top I b of the frame I adjacent the side 19a of the fence I9. The edge of the sheet at right angles to the fence I9 is forced toward the shearing rollers 6 and 1 whereupon these shearing rollers engage the sheet of material and cut the same parallel to the surface 19a of the fence l9 and tend to force the material toward the bending and driving roller 9 operating in the forming ways member 8. The strip of material sheared from the plate by the shearing rollers 6 and 1 passes up the ramp M or incline of the forming ways member 8 and is engaged by the serrated periphery 9a of the bending and driving roller 9 which forces the center of the strip of material downwardly into the forming ways member 8 and drives it toward the roller 18 which finishes the forming operation at its sharp angular peripheral portion. Thus each strip of material sheared from a plate on the table top la is automatically forced into an angular in cross-section reinforcing strip by means of the bending and driving roller 9 cooperating with the forming ways member 8 and the forming roller l8. The gears 22 and 23 promote synchronous operation of the shearing rollers 6 and 1 on the shafts 4 and while the motor 2 provides power for operating the shafts 4 and 5 together with the shaft l0 carrying the pulley ll engaged by the belt [3 passing over the pulley I2 on the shaft 4.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but. desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
