Referring more snecicailytc thedrawines, .the invention is .disclosed .as embodied in .a -`,yviillizig device .comprising .a U-,shaped frame .F comprising upstanding legs .l Aand 2 and aconnetingbase portion .3. Formed integral with the upper ,end .of the leg I isa head vla and .a handle .4 by means .of which .the device maybe held While in use, The leg l2 is formed at .its upper .end `with a head f2?L which is slotted at .5..to permit the insertion .of .a portion of the wire leader in .which the `eye is .to .be formed. A clamp screw .threaded through .the upper portion `of `the head 2&1, .is .adapted to bear .upon'tne Wire .to yclamp kit yin :the slot, for a purpose .hereinafter to be described.
@The head is is `formed Ywith `a ver-tical bore 1 vthichrreceives the shank portion 38L of an inverted AI -shaped arbor A formed `at its .upper v.end with .an oiiset handle portion 8b. The head la is also provided with a horizontal slot I 4and Ia clearance aperture lb which -intersects vthe bore l and the slot ic, thereby provid-ing,Y on the head ia, -a pair of vertically'spaced curved lingers f which embrace the shank Se of ythe arbor A. The shank of the arbor is formed with a -vertical groove 8C which is aligned with the clearance aperture lb in therhead Vla. Thus the eye of a heh-hook h, a swivel sor other eyed element, may tbe placed against .the side of the head lEL with Ythe eye-portion e thereof located in the groove 3C intne arbor. With the parts in this position, one .endjc a vtire leader w may be passed through the 'slot fi@ between the lingers f and through the eye .efoi the fish hook, as shown in dotted lines `in Fig. 4.
Cooperating with the trame F and the arbor 8 is a winding irey member K comprising a substantially cylindrical shank portion 9a, a ring-like lower endpertion 9b which affords a ringer-piece, and a reduced cylindrical upper end portion 9c. The key member is formed with a central Vlongitudinal bore Sid and, in the portion 9 with an upwardly inclined transverse slot Se which intersects the bore.
Operation Assuming that the device is to be used to form a relatively small eye in a Wire leader and to have that eye engage the eye of a sh hook, the operation of the device is as follows:
A fish hook h is placed against the side of the head Ia of the frame F With the eye e thereof 3 in the groove 8 in the arbor as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 6. One short end portion w' of the wire w is then passed through the slot 1 between the fingers f and through the eye e of the sh hook. The main portion of the wire is then turned clockwise (Figs. 2 and 4) about the arbor A and a portion thereof is passed laterally into the slot 5 in the head 2a and beneath the clamp-screw. 6 .Where it is clamped by tightening of the screw. The end portion w of the wire is then inserted in the bore 9d ofthe key K which is then turned and placed upon the wire w by hooking the slotted upper end of the key over the wire adjacent the frame head la. This forms a loop p (Fig. 7) in the wire about the arbor A and places the main portion of the Wire against the side of the end portion wf in the bore 9d, as shown in Fig. 5. The key K and the portion of the wire in the bore 9d are then turned about the clamped Wire w, as indicated by the arrow X in Fig. 1. This wraps the end portion w of the wire about the main portion thereof and tightens the loop fp into a relatively small substantially circular eye E which vencircles the arbor. As the vcoils c continue to be made by the turning of the key, that portion of the wire in the bore 9d of the key is used up. This may be continued until the end of the Wire emerges from the upper end of the bore in the key. This winding operation produces an eye E and a plurality of contiguous coils c as shown in Fig. 9. The hook-like portion I-l projecting from the last coil may then be cut off, as indicated at T in Fig. 9.V
It is to be understood that swivels or other devices likewise may be attached to the wire w by the above described operation. Under certain conditions and for certain purposes, it may be desired to form eyes in wires without having any hook or other Yobject connected thereto. This may be accomplished by following the operation described above and merely omitting the sh hook or other object.
After the eye E has been formed by the above described winding operation, the wire may be removed from the device by loosening the clamp screw 6 and withdrawing the arbor A from the bore 'I and the eye E.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is:
1. In a device for forming an eye at the end of a wire and securing the same to the eye of a fish hook or the like in which the wire is passed through the eye of the iish hook and a free end portion of the wire is wrapped about the wire; the improvement which comprises a U-shaped frame aiording two spaced heads, means to hold a wire in one of said heads, the other of said 4 heads having a slot, a bore intersecting the slot and a clearance space intersecting the slot and extending to said bore, an arbor about which the wire is to be looped during the formation of the eye thereof removably mounted in said bore and extending across said slot, said arbor having a groove alignable with said clearance space to receive a part of the eye of the iish hook placed in the clearance ,space and to align the eye with said slot, wherebya Wire looped about the arbor during the formation of the eye of the wire will pass through the eye of the iish hook.
2. In a winding device for forming an eye at the end of a wire in which the wire is formed into a loop and an end portion of the wire is wrapped about the wire; the improvement which comprises a U-shaped frame aiording two spaced heads, a first of said heads having a slot with opposite sides thereof terminating, respectively, at the' side of said iirst head closest the second head and at the opposite side of said iirst head, means for holdinga wire in said slot, the second of said heads having a slot opening at the side thereof closest the rst head, an arbor about which a wire to be clamped in said rst head may be looped to form the eye mounted in said second head and extending transversely of and across the slot in the second head, and a clearance space formed in said second head and extending to said arbor, whereby a member may be inserted in said clearance space and have the wire looped around it as well as the arbor before the end portion of the Wire is wrapped about the wire to form the eye.
