Description

Sept. 25, 1951 I E. K. KARLSSON RIBBED CORN SNAPPING ROLL WITH RUBBER INSERTS Filed Sept. 30, 1948 Patented Sept. 25, 1951 RIBBED CORN SNAPPING ROLL WITH RUBBER INSERTS Elof KJKai-lsson, Moline, 111., assignor to International Harvester Company, a corporation of New Jersey "the function of moving a corn stalk rearwardly therebetween and must equipped to pull the stalk downwardly. This last actionmust be aggressive in" order to effectively pull the stalk down between the cooperativesnapping rolls to the point where the ear is attached to the stalk. Many forms of aggressive -means have been employed to cause this downward movement of the stalk, but there'have been few if any'rolls which are'aggr'essive enough to engage and force the stalk downwardly without crushing the stalk and thus breaking it oil or causing considerable shelling of corn when the ear is snapped. Certain of these prior corn snapping rolls employed a combination of materials such as wood and rubber or the like, but none of them operated too successfully for any length of time.
It is a principal object of this invention to provide a corn snapping roll which will snap ears of corn without breaking of the stalk or shelling of corn, and one which will have a long wearing life.
An important object of this invention is to provide a corn snapping roll having an integral spiral rib and a plurality of rubber inserts.
Another important object of this invention is the provision of means in a ribbed corn snapping roll for positioning a plurality of rubber pads between adjacent convolutions of the spiral rib.
A further important object of this invention is to supply a corn snapping roll with a helically wound rib extending along the length thereof and having lug means thereon for centering and positively positioning rubber inserts in longitudinal alignment on the roll.
Another and still further important object of this invention is to provide a spiral ribbed snapping roll with a plurality of yieldable pads locked in predetermined position between adjacent convolutions of the spiral rib and means substantially shielding the yieldablepads from abrasive action along the edges thereof;
Other and further important objects of this invention will become apparent from the disclosures in the following specification and accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the snapping roll of this invention having rubber inserts mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of a portion of the roll as shown in Fig. 1.
Application September 30, 1948, Serial No. 52,112
simultaneously be As shown in the drawings, the reference numeral III indicates generally a corn snapping roll having a generally cylindrical core I I with a forwardly tapering point I2 and a spiral rib I3 wound around the core II and extending substantially the full length of the roll. The rib I3 is fastened integrally with the core II and forms substantially a helix. The rib I3 as shown in Figil is a double helix in order that adjacent convolutions shall be closely spaced apart.
The rib I3 is provided with longitudinally extending lug members I 4, I5, I6 and I1. The lugs I4 and I5 are relatively widely spaced laterally of each other whereas the lugs I6 and I! in opposing position to the lugs I4 and I5 are relatively closely laterally spaced. My co pending application entitled Stalk Feeding Roll and having Serial "No. 716,149 now abandoned discloses a ribbed corn snapping roll having the longitudinally extending short lugs as shown in the present case. The lugs are for the purpose of making the snapping roll more aggressive in its forcing of the corn stalk downwardly between a pair of cooperative snapping rolls.
The roll, including the core and rib I3, and the lugs I4, I5, I6 and I! are preferably made of steel or some hard material and thus it is necessary to reduce the probable damage which these steel lugs will inflict on a corn stalk and/or an ear of corn. Pads l8 of a yieldable material such as rubber or synthetic rubber are placed in a longitudinal path between adjacent convolutions of the closely spaced spiral rib. The rubber pads I8 are provided with notches I9 and 20 in one side thereof extending throughout the depth of the rubber pad and are adapted to slidably fit over the projecting lugs I6 and IT. The lugs therefore center the rubber pads I8 and reinforce the pads against the destructive action of corn snapping. The opposite side of the rubber pad I8 is not notched inasmuch as the length of the pad is such that the pad fits between the lugs I4 and I5. These last mentioned lugs cover a portion of the end faces 2| and 22 of the rubber pads and shield them against any direct abrasive action caused by the corn snapping operation.
The lugs are preferably not positioned between each of the adjacent convolutions of the spiral rib butrather are spaced so that there is at least one blank space between each of the rubber pads. The pads I8 are provided with openings 23 through the center thereof through which bolt means 24 are applied for fastening the pads to the core I I. The enlarged side elevational View of Fig. 2 shows the positioning of the rubber pads or inserts in the roll I0. It should be noted widely spaced lugs 14 and 15.
--metal cores for further reinforcement.
that there are two longitudinal paths of the rubber pads at diametrically opposite positions on the roll and that the rubber pads are alternately placed so that the roll does not have more than one rubber pad in any one horizontal space between convolutions of the spiral rib as viewed in Fig. '2 of the drawing.
In operation a pair of snapping rolls are employed in cooperation with one another in such a manner that they are rotated inwardly toward each other and are placed so that every rubber pad 18 will mesh with a blank space on the 'op- -stall: feeding'and corn snapping without shelling.
Numerous details of construction maybe varied "throughout a wide range Without departing from the :principles disclosed herein and I therefore do not propose-limiting thepatent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the appended claims.
What is claimed is: 1. Ina corn snapping roll comprising a substantially cylindrical core, a spiral rib extending around and along the core and forming a unitary part'thereof, said ribs having short longitudinally extending lugs projecting inwardly toward each other between adjacent convolutions of said spiral :rib, and rubber insert means formed with spaced notches therein in alinement with said short longitudinally extending lugs for the reception of said lugs from one of the spiral ribs, said rubber insert means placed on the 'core of-said roll between adjacent rib convolutions.
2. '-A device as set forth in claim 1 in which the-lugs of-the other adjacent spiral rib abut the ends of said rubber insert means.
