WATER PUMP Filed Deb. 24, 1949 v Zhmentor ttorneg Patented Sept. 25, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,568,842 j WATER PUMP v John M; Baldwin, Spokane, Wash. I I Application December 24, 1949, Serial'No. 134,880
This invention relates to a water pump and it is one'object of the invention to provide a pump which is particularly adapted for use in connection with an irrigation system and will not only serve to deliver water from a, source of supply but also serve to deliver a portion of the water to a reservoir mounted in an elevated position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pump wherein water flowing from a, supply pipe is delivered into a water chamber of a container which is slidabl vertically in a tank or casing and serves to shift the container downwardly from a raised position, the tank having an outlet controlled by a valve which is moved to opened and closed positions by vertical movement of the container and the container serving to actuate operating means for a pump by means of which water is forced to a reservoir.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pump of this character wherein the container is moved to a raised position by floating action of air in an air chamber formed in the container 5 Claims. (01.10345) under a water chamber in the upper portion of the container.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pump structure wherein water in the upper water chamber is retained therein until weight of the water moves the container downwardly and a valve controlling flow of water through a downwardly outlet pipe of the water chamber is moved upwardly to an opened position by contact with the bottom of the container.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pump structure wherein the container carries an arm having a finger'dlsposed between side arms of a stem for a vertically movable valve by means of which flow of water from the water chamber of the tank or casing is controlled and thus cause this valve to be opened and closed as the container approaches limits of its Vertical movement during operation of the pump.
Another object of the invention is to provide the pump structure with a pump which is in communication with a sump formed at the inner end of a trough into which water flows from the tank, the pump including a vertically movable piston having its piston rod connected with operating mechanism actuated by vertical movement of the container.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pump structure which is simple in construction and will operate very efliciently and serve very efiectively to force water to the elevated reservoir while water is being delivered to an irrigation ditch or trough. 1 L
The invention is illustrated in the accompan ring drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the improved pump structure and the reservoir to which water is forced.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view upon an enlarged scale taken vertically through the pump structure.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary-sectional view upon an enlarged scale taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2. I
The tank or casing I of this improved pump I structure maybe formed of metal, or other suitable material, and is open at its top and circular in cross section. The bottom 2 of the tank is formed at its center with a depression or recess 3 which is counter sunk in the concrete base or foundation 4 upon which the tank rests. A trough 5 extends from the portion of the foundation upon which the tank rests and at its inner end the trough is formed'with a, sump 6. Above this sump the tank is formed with an outlet 1 which projects from a side of the tank at the bottom thereof so that water flowing through the outlet. neck may flow downwardly through the lower portion of a vertically disposed cylindrical'valve casing B and into the inner end of the trough to fill the sump and flow along the trough to an irrigation ditch or to any other point where the water is to be used. The valve casing 13 is held vertically by a brace 9 and in this casing is mounted a valve plunger ill which serves as a closure for the outlet spout I when in alowered position but is disposed out of blocking relation to the spout when in the raised or opened position shown in Figure 2. A stem or rod I l extends upwardly from the valve plunger and projects from the'upper end of the valve casing, its length being such that it projects above the upper end of the tank or casing I. The upper end of the stem or rod is bent to form an upper ear l2 which projects towards the casing or tank and in downwardly spaced relation to the upper ear the rod carries a lower ear [3 which also projects inwardly towards the tank in parallel spaced relation to the upper ear.
The valve plunger 10 mustbe yieldably held in a closed position or an opened position and in order to do so there has been provided a toggle structure l4 having a rod l5 which has at its inner end a cross head I6 pivotally mounted between brackets I! carried by and projecting horizontally from the tank. The rod is thus mounted for vertical swinging movement, and referring to Figure 3 it will be seen that theouter endportionor the rod slidably passes through a collar I8 carrying a laterally extending pin 19 which is loosely mounted through an opening 20 formed through the rod ll transversely thereof. A washer 2| and a nut 22 are mounted upon the protruding end of the pin l9 and serve to prevent the pin from slipping longitudinally out of the opening 20. A helical spring 23 which is coiled about the rod I has its inner end bearing against a disk 24 surrounding the inner end portion of the rod and the outer end of the spring bears against the collar and yieldably resists movement of the rod and the collar relative to each other. Therefore when the rod H is shifted vertically the rod l5 of the toggle must be forced past a dead center and the spring will then expand and cause the valve rod 1 l to be held in an adjusted position with the valve plunger in an opened or closed position according to which direction rod H is moved.
A container 25 which is also preferably formed of metal, and is circular in cross section, fits into the tank or casing I through the open upper end thereof and is slidable vertically in the tank. This container is divided by a horizontal partition 26 to form an upper water chamber 21 and a lower air chamber 28, the upper chamber being open at its top and the lower chamber being entirely closed so that air will be confined therein and this portion of the container serves as a float. A discharge pipe 29 is disposed vertically centrally of the container with its lower portion passing through the bottom 33 of the container and projecting downwardly therefrom, the upper portion of the pipe being enlarged to form a mouth 3| which resembles a funnel and mounted through an opening in the partition where it is secured by solder or welding 32 which firmly holds the outlet pipe to the partition and forms an air tight joint about the upper edge of the mouth 3|. Solder or welding may also be employed for forming an air tight joint about the portion of the pipe which passes downwardly through the bottom of the container and about the marginal edge of the partition. Spiders 33 are mounted in the discharge spout and through these spiders slidably passes the stem 34 of a float valve 35 which is an upwardly opening check valve and normally rests in a closed position upon a valve seat 36 formed about the lower end of the pipe 29. portion of the stem 34 or a separate rod, extends downwardly from the float valve 35 and when this rod contacts the bottom of the recess 3'the valve will be shifted upwardly and water in the chamber 21 allowed to flow through the pipe" 29 and into the lower portion of the tank-under the container. During downward movement of the container the finger 38 projecting outwardly from the lower end of a rod 39 carried by the container engages the finger l3 of thes'tem H and shifts the stem and the valve plunger l0 downwardly so that the outlet neck 1' is closed and water flowing from the pipe 29' will be confined in the casing or tank and gradually fill the tank with water. As the float-forming portion of the container causes the container" to move upwardly in the casing the finger 38 moves upwardly towards the upper end of the stem I I and when it engages the finger IZ'the stem will be drawn upwardly and the'valve I-O moved to its raised or opened position.' Water may then flow through the neck 1 and the lower portion of the' tubular valve casing-3 and the sump 6 will be filled with water and water flow; through the trough 5. As water flows from't-he" bottom"-o- A rod 31, which may be a 4 the tank or casing the container will move downwardly until the valve In is again closed and the valve 35 opened to allow escape of water from the water chamber 21.
A portion of the water flowing from the tank is to be delivered to a. reservoir 40 mounted in an elevated position upon a support 4|. In order to do so there has been provided a pump 42 having a vertically disposed cylinder 43 in which operates a piston 44 having an upwardly extending piston rod 45. This piston rod has its upper end pivotally connected with a rocker bar 46 tiltably mounted upon a pivot 41 and having its inner end-pivoted to a bail 48 projecting upwardly from the container and mounted in openings 49 at opposite sides of the container. Therefore as the container moves upwardly and downwardly the rocker bar will be tilted vertically and the piston reciprocated in the pump cylinder 43 so that water will be drawn from the sump 6 through the pipe 50 into the pump and then forced through the discharge pipe 5 l and into the reservoir during operation of the pump.
The float valve 35 operates on the same principle as the float valve in a toilet reservoir. When it is raised, the flow of water past the convex surface of the valve maintains it in raised position until said flow diminishes to the extent that the valve may again drop into the seat.
