In order to advance the *material step-bystep or intermittently in conjunction witli' the feedingof the material by the roller l6, thereis provided' a plurality of material engaging eleine'nt'sZI carried by a chain 22 in equally spaced relation to each other. Thechain 22 encircles a driving sprocket 23 having intermittent motion, and sprockets 2'4 and 25, respectively. The sprockets 23, 2t and 25 are mounted on shafts 26; 21 and 28', respectively. In order to cut or sever the material |2 into .separate piecesof the required length to produce individual wrappers, there is. provided means comprising three cutting members 45, 46 and 41, respectively, extending transversely with respect to the path of travel of the material 2. The member. 45 is mounted for cutting movement with respect to the other members 46 and 41 to cooperate therewith to cut transversely through the material. The member 45 has downwardly diverging cutting edges 48. The member 45 moves in guides 49 rising from the table |9 and is hingedly connected, as at 50, with the cross-bar 5| of the yoke 39. Springs 52 are interposed between the cutting member 45 and the cross-bar 5| to yieldingly hold the member45 against the guides 49 in a cutting position. The cutting member 45 thus connected and arranged moves up and down with the yoke 39 so that while the pins 35 are being impaled, the material I2 is being out. It is therefore understood that two of the elements 2| are engaged with the material l2 at the time it is being cut. The cutting member 46 is fixed to the table on the underside at an opening in the table which clears the cutting member 45. The cutting member 41 is supported by a block 53 secured to table on the underside. The member 41 is arranged in alinement with the companion member 46 and is slidable laterally with respect tothe path of travel of the reach members 3| in the slot 20. Each of the members 46 and 41 consists of a bar providing a straight edge which coacts with one of the edges 48 of the cutting member 45. The member 41 is slid inwardly to a cutting position and is slid outwardly to an out of the way position so as to clear the members 3|. A suitable cam 54 carried by the yoke 3| cooperates with spaced pins 55 on the outerend of the cutting member 41. When the material I2 is being cut the member 41 is in its cutting position with respect to the member 46 so that both of these member will cooperate with the cutting member 45. In Fig. 2 the yoke 39 is shown depressed, thereby causing the cutting member 45 to produce a shearing action in conjunction with the members 46 and 41 cutting the material |2 to sever a piece and at the same time causing the presser 36 to force the leading end of the uncut material to be forced down against the cross-bar 30 impaled by the pins 35 thereon. As the yoke is returned to its up position as shown in Fig. 1, the cam 54 acts on the outermost pin 55 causing the cutting member 41 to move outwardly to clear the slot 20 for the passage of the reach member 3| of the particular impaling element 2| in its forward movement with the chain 22. The next preceding element 2| advances the out piece or wrapper with a slab of butter 44. Each element 2| advances its wrapper and slab 44 to a transfer point from which the wrapper and its slab 44 is carried through the wrapping means of the ma chine. On the way to the transfer point each slab 44 is printed and subsequently cut into patties or chiplets.
At the aforesaid transfer point each wrapper is stripped from the impaling means 35. This is accomplished by a stripper 56 hingedly connected, as at 51, with a cross-bar 58 fixedly secured to the table I9. A coil spring 59 surrounding the hinge pintle has one end bearing on the stripper 56 at the top, and the opposite end bearing on the cross-bar 58 at the underside thereof, as shown in Fig. 7. The spring 59 yieldingly holds the stripper in a down position as shown in Fig. 6. The stripper consists of a plate of spring metal notched, as at 60, to provide a transverse row of spring fingers 6|. Each notch 60 accommodates a pair of the pins 35 while the fingers 6| engage the leading edge of each wrapper presented thereto. A row of bevels on the plate or bar 30 constitute cam means 62 which cooperate with the fingers 6|, respectively, to lift or disengage the wrapper from the pins 35 on said bar 36, as shown in Fig. 8. Thus, the wrapper is free of the translating element 2| so that the wrapper and its slab 44 may be shifted laterally for the wrapping operation. If desired, one or all of the fingers 6| may have a protuberance 63 to facilitate the wrapper stripping action.
In lieu of the means described above for disengaging or stripping each wrapper from the means 35 at said transfer point, use is made of a stripper 65 on each of the material engaging elements 2 I, and an obstacle 66 arranged to co operate with said stripper 65 at the transfer point. The stripper 65 consists of a metal plate having a lateral projection 61 and rows of holes 68 to receive the two rows of pins 35 respectively, projecting upwardly through the plate. The stripper 65 is loosely connected with shouldered studs 69 on the cross bar 30 of the element 2|, so that the stripper 65 may be actuated to pivot upwardly to free or strip the wrapper from the pins 35. as well "as the roduced wrappers, means*fornonveying"or'translatingthe slabs of butter 44. This enables the use of a single means, namely, the chain 22 and the elements 2 I, for advancing the uncut wrapping material as well as the wrappers laden with the products to be wrapped.
I claim:
1. In a mechanism of the character described, means to support suitable material for guided movement with a portion thereof disposed horizontally and to be cut into individual wrappers, the uncut horizontally disposed portion to receive at intervals articles to be wrapped, a plurality of spaced driven material engaging elements to successively advance the uncut material step-bystep, each of said elements also serving to advance a wrapper with which it is engaged after a material cutting operation, means to sever the material in advance of each of said elements after a dwell in its movement, and means to free the wrapper from each of said elements as the latter is advanced into a predetermined position.
2. In a mechanism of the character described, a cutter comprising a cutting member having cutting movement, a fixed cutting member, and a laterally movable cutting member arranged in alinement with the fixed cutting member, said first cutting member having cutting movement with respect to the second and third cutting members, means to operate the first cutting member, and means to cause the periodic lateral movement of the third cutting member into and out of a cutting position in timed accord with the operation of the first cutting member.

In a mechanism as set forth in claim 2, and in combination, a plurality of spaced driven material engaging elements to advance suitable material to be cut by said cutter, each of said elements in turn enabled to pass the cutter during the time the third cutting member is out of its cutting position.

In a mechanism of the character described, an endless driving member having intermittent movement, impaling elements on said driving member in equally spaced relation with respect to each other for the purpone of advancing wrapping material intermittently, cutting means for cutting the wrapping material, a presser for pressing the wrapping material into engagement with said impaling elements in order one after another, and means to operate the cutting means and said presser in timed accord with the operation of said driving member.

In a mechanism of the character described, a material engaging element movable in a predetermined path to engage and convey the material, said element having material impaling means, an apertured pivotally mounted plate carried by said element through which said imsauna means project "w en t e plateis me add which' plate may be actuated in" response to the s mentor sai dementtb-diSene-age thematerial from the elementa't a predetermined point along said path; and means to actuate said plate for thepufpose stated. In a mechanism of the character described, means to support suitable material for guided movement to be cut into individual wrappers, a. plurality of spaced driven material engaging elements to successively advance the uncut material step-by-step and each of said elements also serving to advance a wrapper with which it is engaged after a material cutting operation, means to impart intermittent movement to said elements for the purposes stated, each of said elements having means for impaling the material, means to sever the material at intervals to produce the individual wrappers, and means for stripping each wrapper from the impaling means engaged therewith as the related element is advanced into a predetermined position.
8. In a mechanism of the character described, means to support suitable material for guided movement to be cut into individual wrappers, a
plurality of spaced driven material engaging elements to successively advance the uncut material step-by-step and each of said elements also serving to advance a wrapper with which it'is engaged after a material cutting operation, means to impart intermittent movement to said elements for the purposes stated, each of said elements having means for impaling the material, means to sever the material at intervals to produce the individual wrappers, and means which cooperates with each of said elements to press the material in engagement with the impaling means of'each of said elements as the element reaches a predetermined position.
9. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination of a plurality of spaced driven material engaging elements to advance endless sheet material to be cut in suitable lengths, a cutter operable to cut the material, as aforesaid, said cutter comprising cooperative cutting members one of which is movable up and down and the other one movable laterally between a cutting position in the path of said material engaging elements and anon-cutting position out of the path of said elements, and means causing the movement of the cutting members in succession.
10. Ina mechanism as set forth in claim 9, wherein said last means includes a lever on which the cutting member having the up and down movement is hingedly mounted.
11. In a mechanism as set forth in claim 10, and a cam carried by the lever cooperating with the laterally movable cutting member.
12. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination of a table having a longitudinal slot therein, an endless driving element having intermittent movement below said table, a plurality of material engaging elements arranged on the comprising a cross-bar, means on the underside of the cross-bar connecting the cross-bar with said driving element so that said means may travel 5 in the slot while the cross-bar travels above the table, means on the cross-bar to engage an endless band of material to advance the material so that it may be cut into separate pieces and to advance one of the pieces. 13. In a mechanism as set forth in claim 12, and cutting means operating in timed accord with the intermittent movement of the material to cut the material to produce the separate pieces.
14. In a mechanism as set forth in claim 12, wherein said means on the cross-bar for engaging the material consists of impaling pins.
