I J. REOKENDORPER & G. W. BOMAN.
COMBINED PENCIL POINT PROTECTOR, TWINE CUTTER, AND WHISTLE.
No. 256,738. Patented Apr. 18,1882.
WITNESSES W rney By Z/zer Affo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH REOKENDORFER AND OLAES W. BOMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO SAID REGKENDORFER.
COMBINED PENCIL-POINT PROTECTOR, TWINE-CUTTER, AND WHISTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed February 20, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOSEPH RECKENDOR- FER and Guns W. BOMAN, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Pencil- Point Protector, Twine-Gutter, and Whistle, of which the following is a specification, refcrence being had to the accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of the device on enlarged scale. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same.
A is thepoint-protecting tube, which is usually made with a longitudinal slit, 0!, at the end, in which the pencil isinserted, and has an internally-projecting annular bead, b, to limitthe extent to which the pencil can enter. The tube back of the point at which the bead is formed is prolonged sufficiently to form the barrelof a whistle. The whistle end of the tube is shaped like the mouth end of a whistle, as shown, and is provided with a slot, 0, for the escape of air. The plug d, that fills the month end of the whistle, not only serves the usual purpose in this respect, butis also the holder fora twinecutting blade, 0, having a slanting cuttingedge, e, as shown. This blade is soldered upright in the plug, which latteris in turn brazed or soldered in place in the tube A, its position being such that the slanting cutting-edge of the blade will stand in the middle part of and in a plane at about right angles to the slot 0, and the latter has a curved or crescent-like shape, as represented in the drawings. The necessary air-passage f from the mouth end of the whistle to the slot 0 is formed through the plug 01.
The device manifestly can be used as a whistle. It can be used as a twine cutter as I Patent No. 256,738, dated April 18, 1882.

well. The twine to be cut when drawn down into the slot 0 will extend across the cuttingedge e and will thereby be cut. The slant given to the cutter causes the twine to travel down the edge as it is pulled down into the slot, thus making a draw-cut.
It will be seen that the plug (1 and the slot 0 have a twofold function. The one constitutes the whistle-plug and the cutter-holder and the other is the whistle slot and the opening through which the twineean be broughtagainst the cutter.
In thetubeAa diaphragm orpa titiomg, can be placed, if desired.
It is manifest that the pencil-point-protecting part of the tube A can be omitted without departure from our invention-that is to say, the device may be adapted to be used simply as a whistle and twine cutter, or some other part may be substituted for the point-protect ing portion of the device.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The hereinbefore described combined point-protector, whistle, and twinecutter as a new article of manufacture.
2. The tube A, provided with a whistle end and with a slot, 0, as described,in combination with the cutter e, and the plug (1, constituting the whistle-plugand the cutter-holder, as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 11th day of February, 1882.
JOS. REOKENDORFEIS. GLAES W. BOMAN.
I Witnesses:
G. S. BRAISTED, J OE W. SWAINE.
