NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD P. MORRIS, OF GLADE HILL, VIRGINIA.
SEED-PLANTER.
SPECIFIC ATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,724, dated April 18, 1882.
Application filed January 5, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD P. MORRIS, of Glade Hill,in the county of Franklin and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seed-Planters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to seed-planters; and its object is to provide a cheap and simple planter which may be drawn by one horse.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of my improved seed-planter. Fig. 3 is a detail.
The frame-work of the planter consists of the central beam, A, the branching side beams, B, and the handles 0, made like those of a plow. The beams A and B are curved downward at their rear ends, and provided with bolts for securing plows thereto. The handles and side beams are secured to the beam A by suitable bolts, and the rear ends of the bandles are supported by braces D, secured to the side beams. With this construction the beam A supports the opening-plow, and the side beams, B, which project rearward, support the two covering-plows.
Upon the left side beam, B, is secured a standard, E, having a vertical slot therein, in which is secured a sliding bearing, F, for supporting one end of the shaft G carrying the seed-dropping wheel H.
Between the bearing F and the upper end of the slot is secured a spiral spring, I, which shall be strong enough to hold the bearing down, and to yield under pressure when necessary.
On the right side beam is secured a slotted standard, J,baving an oscillating bearing,
(No model.)
K, secured therein, which shall allow the op- 0 or stones without throwing the plows out of the ground.
A suitable hopper, M, is located over the seed-wheel H and supported upon the shaft G. To allow the hopper to be moved with the shaft withoutdisplacement, it is connected to a crossrod, N, attached to the handles by means of a slotted bar, 0. The hopper is thus suspended by means of the rod N, which passes through the slot in the bar 0, while it rests upon the shaft G and moves with the shaft as the wheel passes over obstructions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a seed-planter, of a shaft for the seed-dropping wheel, which is adapted to oscillate vertically at one end, and a hopper which is supported upon the shaft and connected to a cross rod above it by means of a slotted bar, to allow the hopper to oscillate with the shaft, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a seedplanter, ofthe shaft G, having seed-dropping wheel H, the slotted standard E, having elastic sliding bearing F, the slotted standard J, having oscillat ing bearing K, the driving-wheel L, and a suitable frame-work having opening and covering plows, substantially as shown and described.
EDWARD P. MORRIS.
